Day 14: Live for today. Plan for tomorrow.
This morning I woke earlier than I wanted. We don’t have class on Fridays and it could have been a good day to rest but who needs rest? There’s so much to do and always something to learn!
After completing a few errands, I went into the city. This time by myself. I did, however, link with una chica from class. We purchased souvenirs for our friends and family. I hope my mom likes her gift!
I came to la casa for lunch. I worked on a few items. Ate dinner around 9 p.m. Then, headed out.
Rey and I met up with one of the girls from UPO and we attended the Festival of Nations. We saw Tie and several others. It could have been really fun. There was so much food. Candy! Clothes. And a lot to drink. It’s too bad I didn’t feel well. The girls tried several items. I think they enjoyed themselves.
Later, we stopped by Calle Betis. Club goers filled the streets, everywhere.
The highlight of the night however, wasn’t the Festival of Nations or Calle Betis. It was the Metro! It was crowded. The end of the night. Mix that with a little cerveza and you’re sure to get a show. We had front row seats. A few guys had an altercation. A few things were exchanged. And. ..needless to say, I’ll never take the last ride of the night. If something goes down, there’s no way out. The driver keeps driving and everyone else just watches.
Moving along, we’re going to the beach in a few hours. Good night!

Day Seven: Run!
After a tough day, I decided to stop by the university and grab a few textbooks. Most students have class early in the day, so I thought 5 p.m. on a Friday would be perfect for my camera and me.
I stopped by la copisteria (a store for copies) and la librería (book store) and gathered enough money to purchase a book. The other, I’ll get Monday. I walked to la biblioteca (library) to snag a cold Sprite. I think that’s the only vending machine on campus that has Sprite! As I popped the top, I noticed some guy glaring blankly at me. I tried not to notice and had a seat, until I caught his eyes again.
De donde eres? He asked. Not sure if it was safe to say the United States, I did anyway. Then, I kicked myself as he interrogated me. Let’s call him. ..”Eduardo.” Eduardo is a professor for middle and high school students. And he’s learning English at the UPO. Cool.
He said I could teach him English and in exchange, he would show me around Seville while I practice Spanish. OK. Then, Eduardo insisted he give me a ride “home.”
“I can’t explain the route by the car,” I said. I only know how to get to the apartment from the Metro.
I told him I had to run. My host lady would cook dinner around 8 p.m. Then, I dashed out the library and sped walked to another side of campus. I used the time to stall, in case he came to the Metro station to follow me. I know I’m the new girl in town but I will not be an episode of “Taken.” Nor will my character become one from a Lifetime movie who gets killed.
Dramatic? Maybe. But so far, my scenes in Seville have been too similar to those I usually see in movies. I’d rather be safe than .. .sorry.

Day Four: Mingling with the Americans and Roaming the Streets
This morning, Fuen (my host lady) and I roamed the streets of Sevilla. I exchanged my American dollars to euros at the BBVA (bank). After the exchange, we stopped by a super market, se llama “Dia super market.” It’s like the Save a Lot store we have in the U.S. I saw M & M’s, Oreos and dry Gin. I saw more than that, but those items peaked my interest. I’m still on the hunt for American candy, particularly Hershey’s Almond. I got excited when I saw M & M’s and Oreos.
After dropping the items by the apartment, we set foot again. We walk or ride the Metro everywhere! We stopped through el Centro Comercial to buy un mobil (cell) where I saw the soccer stadium. I’ll get a picture next time! Then back to the apartment for lunch. She cooked beans and threw in some carne. It was nice but I was too sad to eat all my food. I had been excited to finally have un mobil but I couldn’t figure out how to make calls to the states.
Después, I hopped on the Metro and headed to the university for orientation. There, I met Daniel, he’s Australian, Tie (he spells his name like a tie), Sara, SaraH, Karie (with a “K”), Ana, Gabriela and Alex. This semester has potential! We shared a few snacks and met fresh faces. And that’s all I have time for because I’m supposed to be asleep! My host lady stepped out con su hermana para una cerveza. I was oh, so tired and decided to stay here. Night!
—Note—
Their signs and (most) traffic lights are on the side walk to the right of traffic. In Florida, our traffic lights are above and signs are more central, not off to the side.

Day Three: Home is not Where the Heart is!
I visited Universidad Pablo de Olavide today for my placement exam. I met girls from Pennsylvania, Erica, Victoria and Paige. I met Amanda too, I forgot where she’s from. I rode the Metro to the university all by myself! And on the way back to the apartment, I got lost all by myself!
I wandered the streets of Nervion, Montequinto and I have little idea of everywhere else! For three hours, I looked for the apartment. Each time, I thought I was closer. I don’t have a cell here (yet) and I was fine finding my way, until I got off the Metro at the wrong spot. Finally, I gave in and went back to the university where someone was able to help me. My host mom had already called the director of the program saying that she and Tana couldn’t find me. If there’s a will and a way, I will lose myself. And I did.
Aside from that, Tana is going back to live with her grandmother. Remember, her owner died from the motorcycle accident? The guy’s funeral was today. Fuen said his mom (her friend) isn’t doing too well, so maybe Tana will give her good company.
I’ve reconnected with some of you from back home. The internet is amazing! With help from Twitter and Facebook, I don’t feel as distant. I missed my siesta today because I was roaming the streets. I’m sleepy!
FYI..Most businesses close at 2 p.m. for the siesta and some open later at night for a few hours of operation.
-Notes-
-Mascots aren’t a big deal in Seville and people don’t care about American football. ;(
-I have yet to find someone other than the girls from P.A. who know about the Florida GATORS
-Girls don’t play many sports here. They compete in gymnastics and run.
-Basketball is unpopular..soccer (futbol) rules the earth!
P.S. Now I understand how lost international students must feel when they come to the University of Florida. Be nice to foreigners!

Day Two:
Hola!
I slept late today. When I woke, it was lunchtime. We ate naked artichoke (without the green stuff) and the tortilla de potato from yesterday. The best part of lunch was the melón. I’m not sure if we have this kind in the U.S. but it tastes good. I love fruit so that was right down my alley!
Tomorrow, I’ll visit the university where I’ll take a placement exam and tour the campus. I’m nervous. Fuen says I shouldn’t worry. She and her friends think I speak great.
On another note, I miss the candy from the U.S. I’m on a mission to find a Hershey’s Almond!

Day One: Bienvenido a España! I arrived to Seville at 8:20 a.m. but the ride was long. The flight lasted about 16 hours. I traveled from Tampa to New York, to Madrid and then to Seville.
I haven’t taken many pictures because I want to minimize my chances of being targeted! I’ve been warned that in el Centro Comercial, people will hijack me for my camera and I could get injured. I’m cautious about using it in public.
In the past, I’ve been shy about speaking Spanish as I’ve grown apart from it over the last 15 years to 20 years. I thought I’d have a difficult time breaking out of my English speaking comfort zone. But being around Spanish natives in their territory forces me to speak the language. Besides, after waiting in the Seville airport for about two hours without being able to reach my host mom, I didn’t have much room to be shy. I hopped in a Taxi and made my way to the apartment, where I met my host mom. Se llama “Fuen.” Since I’m new to the area, I thought studying abroad as an exchange student would be safer than living independently. So far, it’s been beneficial.
Fuen is nice. She’s an artist and crafts just about anything! When I arrived to my room, she had a small flamenco (a woman dancer) sculpture and a “welcome” note waiting for me at the desk. Flamencos originate from Andaluz and dance in pretty dresses to flamenco music. Other than the cute Yorkie, Fuen lives alone in an apartment on the eighth floor, so I have a nice view. The Yorkie is Fuen’s friend’s son’s pet. She’s keeping it right now because the guy, a 24 year-old, died last night after suffering injuries from a motorcycle collision that happened last week. The yorkie’s name is Tana. She seems pretty chill.
Shortly after settling in, Fuen made me tostados for breakfast. It’s basically tomatoes and oil spread on cuban bread. But back home, a tostada is made on a fried tortilla and has frijoles, lettuce sour cream and a few other items. Surprisingly, black beans and rice and other Mexican dishes are unpopular here. I haven’t asked about tomales yet.
After breakfast, we walked about five minutes to the Metro station. On the way back to the apartment, we ran into a few of Fuen’s home girls near the Cruzcampo. They shared a few cervezas (beers) and a dish no one knew the name for. The dish were brown beans with salt on top. You bite into the bean, suck the bean out of the skin and throw the skin away. It was a fun snack. Beer is cheap here and they drink it throughout the day. We all talked until my eyes fell asleep. Afterward, we came to the apartment and ate paella. Then, I took a siesta.
Fuen made lagrimitas de pollo and tortilla de patatas for dinner. She’s going to teach me how to cook it. For now, I’m still sleepy and I’m going to bed soon. Seville is six hours ahead of the time in Florida. There’s more to discuss but I’ll save it for another day.
Thank you to those who support me on this journey!

Friday at Club Play on South Beach was total mayhem. Rap veteran Cam'ron hosted the birthday party for Young A.C. which added to his weeklong celebration.
Young A.C.'s entire Deepside Entertainment crew could be spotted from all points in Play. With bottles popping and people rocking, his VIP section was difficult to miss.
If that wasn't enough, rapper Young Jeezy entered the Presidential Suite hours into the night where he created a groupie frenzy. And when they played that new Jeezy, the whole club went crazy!
BET's Terrence J also attended the party, where he tried to keep a low profile. I ran into NBA rookie Terrence Jones, no pun intended. After nearly knocking me over while dancing with friends, he stopped for a quick shoot. As a GATOR, I've always cared very little for the former Kentucky Wildcats forward, regardless of his talent on the court. But I must say, the guy knows how to have a great time!
Until later, that's Friday's nite cap.

Tuesday, rapper Young A.C. celebrated one of his week long birthday celebrations with an entourage of his closest friends and family. Due to remodeling, I wasn't able to bring my camera inside Cafe Iguanas in Pembroke Pines. But after driving 30 minutes to catch a glimpse of Mr. Flyyy Guy, there was no way I'd leave without first getting a few shots of the birthday boy.

When you're in Miami, it's easy to get sucked into the fast pace lifestyle. But sometimes, it's good to unwind. When it's time, there's nothing like enjoying "Girls Night Out" with a few friends or few followers. Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson does it all the time, why can't you?
On Friday, Miss Cuba 2010 did just that. She tweeted an Instagram inviting Twitter followers to join her at Kitchen 305 at the Newport Beachside Resort in North Miami Beach, FL. The group of girls gathered for free dinner and drinks while enjoying entertainment throughout the night. When we heard about the event we couldn't pass up the offer! Here's a glimpse of memories we captured.
