The Soldier-Civilian stabbing of Wittlich
On the 18th of August 2023, the sky was mostly clear and warm. It marked the second of four days of the traditional Säubrenner fair in Wittlich, located in the Rhineland area of Germany. In stark contrast to the town's center, which was drowning in colorful lights and the smell of sweets, a tragedy would take place the following night.
The 28-year-old Michael Ovsjannikov found himself in a falling-out with two US airmen: 26-year-old Airman First Class Grant Harrison and 25-year-old Staff Sergeant Robert Cain, stationed just 15 minutes away at the Spangdahlem Air Base. He was stabbed four times, fatally, by Airman Harrison, only one block away from his apartment that night.

One of the two men would claim, early on in the interrogations, that he had stabbed Ovsjannikov during the confrontation out of self-defense. He then disposed of the knife by throwing it into a river. However, it was later retrieved by the German Federal Police, and it contained blood that matched the victim’s profile.
During the men’s detention while awaiting trial, the American Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) handled the investigation per the NATO Status of Forces Agreement. It would have been possible for German law enforcement to take responsibility for the case and prosecution within 21 days, but they did not, as this was not common practice, much to the disapproval of Michael’s family.

Cain was released and received immunity after cooperating with the OSI, only having to testify as a witness. Unlike him, Harrison was tried for unpremeditated murder under Article 118 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) in September of 2024.
A US military court consists only of military personnel: judges, prosecutors, and all other court members are US military personnel. The eight-member jury is also made up of soldiers, even from the same base as the defendant, which caused the victim’s family to doubt the unbiased nature of the trial.
Additionally, Harrison retracted the confession he made in the presence of German police. This key piece of evidence was not even presented to the jury, as the confession was deemed "involuntary."
A serious mistake in protocol by German law enforcement contributed to the outcome of the trial: they failed to offer a translation of the charge Harrison was accused of.
Tumblr media
This was a major blunder by the German investigators: if the form had been translated as “suspected homicide,” the military court would likely have considered the confession to be admissible, and Grant Harrison would most likely have been convicted.
On 11th October 2024, Harrison was found not guilty by the jury.
I used the German original version of this article as one of my main sources but in case you want a more in depth explanation, I’ve linked the English version.

I gathered so much info that would only be interesting to my German speaking mutuals because of an acquaintance who went to the same school as Gregor R. and now what? I wonder when they’ll arrest him again, it’s crazy that he just escaped the psych ward essentially

Hey hey, you miss me?
I would like to apologize first and foremost for obliterating and neglecting all of my socials. I was occupied with personal and professional stuff. This may be a little too personal but besides being clean from drugs I also, for the time being, stopped taking my antidepressants. I miss this community more and more recently and would like to return at some point soon.
If I haven’t replied to discord dms I’m deeply sorry, just know it has nothing to do with any of you, I pretty much abandoned my account entirely , I would like to not get into anything personal.
Most importantly, I was very much aware of Gregor R. escaping from the forensic hospital and the Graz shooting and I kept up with the German sources. I regret not translating the sources for all of you when it happened. I’m sure it would’ve been useful (as I do not trust other people’s translations).
Besides I’m still very much into militaria and bought my first full authentic uniform recently but that’s less tcc related.
Apologies again, I hope I can somehow make up for my absence. Things will be different, better.

"Mr Heise, that's enough for today"
this quote by robert steinhäuser always takes me out because the moment his teacher recognised him, he was unable to kill him, it’s almost dialectical. zizek spoke of this and i made a post about that on my old blog:
“In other words, Robert had not yet become a tool of pure, desubjectivized terror; he was still completely committed to what Hegel called the "intersubjective dialectic of recognition". The fact that Robert's violent outburst was preceded by his partial "social death", his exclusion from the circle of those who had "made it" and were recognized, makes the Hegelian background to this tragic case all the clearer: the struggle for recognition, the autonomy that is prepared to put everything at risk because of a minor slight or humiliation.”
