At BroadwayWorld.com’s message boards, there’s an extensive thread devoted to the now-underway preview period for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  As a warning, the reports are mostly negative thus far.
http://www.broadwayworld.com/board/readmessage.php?thread=1100049&dt=100
The major changes, some of which were known for a while, some of which were not, include:
1) Several songs from the West End version have been completely dropped:  “Almost Nearly Perfect”, “The Double Bubble Duchess’, “It’s Teavee Time”, “Simply Second Nature”, “Juicy!”, “A Little Me”, and the closing reprise of “It Must Be Believed to Be Seen”.
2) Other songs appear to have been substantially rewritten and/or repurposed.  “The Amazing Tale of Mr. Willy Wonka” is now “Tales of Wonka”, a solo for Grandpa Joe.  “If Your Mother Were Here” is now “If Your Father Were Here”, a solo for Mrs. Bucket that includes a brief fantasy dance sequence between her and Mr. Bucket (who, as I predicted, died before the action of this version begins).  It also appears that the “Grandpa Joe/How’d you know…” lines from “Don’cha Pinch Me Charlie” have been retained and interpolated into the “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket” and “Pure Imagination” numbers lifted from the 1971 film, and listed as “Grandpa Joe” in the Playbill.
3) The all(?)-new songs are: “Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka!” (Charlie and the company), “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” (Mrs. Teavee and Mike), “When Willy Met Oompa” (Mr. Wonka and the Oompa-Loompas), and “The View from Here” (Mr. Wonka and Charlie).  “Queen of Pop”, introduced as a replacement for “The Double Bubble Duchess” in the final months of the London run, has carried over to this version.  There is also a new finale: A reprise of “Strike That!  Reverse It!” led by Charlie.
4) The songs from the 1971 film that appear are “The Candy Man”, “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket”, “The Oompa-Loompa Song” (it only appears once, when the characters first appear in Act Two), and of course “Pure Imagination”.
5) With the exception of the Great Glass Elevator, none of the West End set designs have been ported across The Pond intact.  Although both productions have the same designer, the sets are apparently very different and less lavish.
6) The Oompa-Loompas are now realized with puppets rather than members of the ensemble in trick costumes.
7) Willy Wonka appears as himself at the top of the show to lead the company in “The Candy Man”, the new opening number, rather than not appearing until the end of Act One.  (As of this post, there haven’t been many details released about exactly how the plot unfolds in Act One and how this can be possible.)
8) And of course, in this version all the characters, with the exception of Charlie, are played by adults.

Monette McKay made her debut as Violet tonight!
Photos from Darius Barnes’s IG. Update: I just saw on IG that Monette went on this evening with only 4 hours of rehearsal. I was at the show and thought she was incredible. You would never have known she’d had such little rehearsal time. She’s a star.
