Inevitable

A poem about the environment.

You can deny it

But you can’t erase it

At what point are we going to finally acknowledge that we are ruining the only home we have?

When the oceans turn black?

When we can’t breathe fresh air?

When beautiful, wild animals are long dead?

We live in a world where ignorance is dominant to wisdom

To sensibility

To morality

To anything that doesn’t benefit ourselves or our egos or our wallets

Our world revolves around money and nothing else

We sacrifice the millions of years of nature that were here long before us,

To cars and straws and the most convenient ways of carrying groceries

We’ve lived on this earth for so long, we feel entitled to it

We feel like it will always be there no matter what, even though we are hurting it

Like a toxic relationship

There is no escape

The earth will stay here and bear our ignorance and carelessness until eventually it breaks, Buried deep beneath the misdoings of our recklessness

But here’s a little tip

We aren’t entitled to anything

Not one single thing

Including this planet

So don’t take it for granted

Don’t sit around and think that there’s no problem

That everything we see and hear regarding this situation is far fetched and fixated on lies

I mean why would there be a problem?

From what we can see,

The oceans are clear

The skies are clear

There are still trees

But what we see is not the truth

The truth lies in what we can’t see

The rising sea levels

The bare pieces of land that used to be forests

The dying species of animals

You can laugh all you want and not care a single bit

But just remember

This is your home too

And by the time we finally put our boastfulness aside and realize there’s a problem,

It’ll be too late

It’s inevitable

As long as there are people who don’t listen

Who don’t believe anything they don’t want to believe

The earth will keep suffering at the hands of humans

Keep breaking until there’s nothing left

And what then?

Nothing

Then there’s nothing

Nothing left

And nothing to keep us going

But inevitable isn’t here yet
