On this day in 1956 Gary Player was announced as a guest columnist for the Daily Mail for a golf instructional series. 

“A new star has rocketed to the top in first-class golf -- GARY PLAYER. Only 20, he is breaking records. How does he do it? Throughout the summer he will share his secrets with Daily Mail readers. His first lesson appears on Saturday.”

This month in Gary Player history... Gary left South Africa in March to go play in the United States for several months before the British Open. Player regularly traveled to play in international tournaments and on tours around the world. c. 1957.

This week in Gary Player history: “Player Masters “Maestro” - 7 Stroke Victory

On Tuesday, March 3, 1959, Gary Player won the Natal Open, beating Bobby Locke by 7 strokes in a 36-hole replay at the Durban Country Club.

Today in Gary Player history... 

“The Joyful Golfer: Gary Player, Open Golf Champion of South Africa jerks his putter aloft with joy as he sinks a 12-ft putt at the Wanderers 9th hole yesterday in the  £ 1,000 Wits, University 72-hole tournament.”

Wits University is the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Player was just 22 years old.
