isn't it kind of funny that both avatars, the children's tv show and the james cameron movies are deeply liberal, racist, fictionalised treatments of indigenous genocide? and exactly the kind of fantasy nonsense where they crib from a bunch of indigenous cultures for worldbuilding reasons but also manage to use a sanskrit title.

I don't think all of human culture has actually always been the same on the inside because its such a broad claim that's easy to falsify. I also don't think anthropology, historically as a field was very good at interpreting societies that didn't resemble their own either. I don't think human societies are untranslatably and exotically different, they can be understood, but it just seems really unlikely they're all the same and there's the same transhistoric understandings of anything. The fact that something looks similar doesn't mean its experienced the same. The Portuguese saw the Indian varna/jati system and they assumed that it looked a bit like their racial hierarchy of casta, but that ignored the endogamy and ritual abjection and the more rigid nature of it. This um desire for pat, just so explanations might be fun but idk, I really dislike its desire to erase the details. They matter, not because the differences are unbridgeable or anything, but because the differences are the true expression of the diversity of human experience. I think that truth has a terminal value and freedom can really only be countenanced when you understand people can really be different from you and deserve it anyway. And yet solidarity is possible across these differences by identifying the similarities. Because usually there's more similarities than differences in fighting power. Ambedkar owed a lot intellectually to the movement for Black liberation.

As the world shrank with a particular bent to power, there were material reasons that that the records we have were arrogant and chose to project their own assumptions on to other groups. I mean these people invented scientific racism. Why would everything else be actually correct? And that's my case against the more crude actually gender was understood the same everywhere. Maybe to some extent it is now, but the violence of colonial enforcement of it suggests otherwise.

i feel like i have to say this every few weeks but the famine in gaza is worsening. more people are suffering. children are going without food. this is not sustainable for palestinians in gaza.

im really scared when i think about the long term consequences of the current famine in gaza. children are not eating enough. they cannot afford to eat enough. it's terrible how there's food rotting on the other side of the border in aid trucks while children are dying of malnutrition.

im especially scared about the infants and the disabled. children born in this genocide only know the constant sound of bombing. it's very terrible.
