In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Scream’s screenwriter Kevin Williamson revealed that the killers had been partially inspired by Leopold and Loeb:

“Originally I knew Billy Loomis was the killer in Scream I, and I got halfway through the movie when I realized, ‘Oh, wait, one person couldn’t have done all this…’ I added the second killer halfway through the writing of Scream I and brought Matt [Lillard’s character Stu] back. Originally he was going to get killed in the house at the end, and then I just kept him alive and said, ‘He should be the partner,’ because I’d always loved the Leopold and Loeb story, and I had done a college essay on it, and I just thought we’d lean in that territory, and all that came pretty naturally.”

He went more in depth with this in 2022, speaking specifically about the queer subtext of the relationship:

“It’s very sort of homoerotic, in the sense that there were these two guys that killed this other person just to see if they could get away with it…And one of the reasons that one could get the other one is because I think the other one was secretly in love with him. And it was sort of a fascinating case study on double murderers. If you Google Leopold and Loeb, you will see. And you’ll read about it and you’ll get, OK, that’s Billy and Stu.”

Sol Pais's outlook on love and how it affected her infatuation with Eric Harris

Sol Leonina Pais was a young woman from the USA, who became the suspect of a nation wide manhunt, after going missing from her home city, Surfside, FL, to travel to Idaho Springs, CO. The authorities flagged her as dangerous, due to her being armed and taking an interest to the Columbine massacre.

The media claimed that Sol had threatened multiple schools in the Denver area, but later it was confirmed to be false. The true motive behind the young girl's "pilgrimage" to Colorado was her infatuation with one of the Columbine shooters – Eric Harris.

Sol left behind a digital footprint that described her feelings of isolation, depression and, most notably, – her love for Eric. One of the main accounts that Sol will be remembered for is her Neocities website. In it she left a scanned copy of her real-life journal.

Pais usually wrote about feeling "misplaced" in the wrong time, reality and universe. She was convinced that her true purpose was to be in the 1990's with Harris. Sol's mental health was deteriorating and it was clear she struggled with feeling depressed and lost. Sometimes, people with untreated clinical depression and loneliness fall into psychosis-like states to distract themselves from their awful feelings, and in Sol's case, she did just that.

In her private instagram posts, Sol wrote about her love for Eric and feeling as if "his presence could make [her] feel safe and comfortable". In one of her last social media posts, she left us a "message", which urges us, her viewers to choose love as our main purpose in life:

The songs in her playlist are sexually explicit and she herself acknowledges their depravity in the playlist's description. Although, some songs explore the feeling of protecting, corrupting and ruining an object of desire. Sol didn't have a desire for the "stereotypical" view of love. With her obsession with Eric, we can safely assume she was drawn to "dangerous" men.

It is clear that love meant a lot to her, but a big part of Sol's story is also her suicidality. Her love for Eric was one of the main contributing factors to her suicide, which is why she chose to die near Mt. Evans, the place where it is rumoured that Eric's ashes were scattered.

Rest in peace, Sol. You will be remembered. I am not glorifying or condoning violence and suicidality! If you feel suicidal, please reach out. Your life matters.

The meat cleaver German serial killer Fritz Haarmann allegedly used for the dismemberment of his victims. It was found by accident 21 years after Haarmann’s execution. It was never proven if the meat cleaver was indeed Haarmann’s.

Fritz Haarmann was a German serial killer who was found guilty of 24 murders and sentenced to death by guillotine. He was initially convicted of 27 murders, but was found not guilty in three cases. Haarmann targeted boys and young men and lured them into his apartment before raping, killing and dismembering them. He threw their remains into the river. The Vampire of Hanover stated that he killed most of his victims by tearing their throats with his teeth, earning him his moniker. He requested an expensive cigar and brazilian coffee as his final wish before being led to the scaffold. His alleged last words were: “I am guilty, gentleman, but hard though it may be, I want to die as a man.” followed by: “I repent, but I do not fear death.” However, some sources claim that Haarmann’s last statement was a simple “Good bye!” before the blade decapitated him.
