Pokemon Shiny Values and You!
A guide to hatching shinies based on TSV and ESV.
So here you are with your boxes upon boxes of eggs. It’s time to hatch them and see if you got that shiny munchlax … yay.
Tumblr media
As it turns out, no, that’s a big waste of time. Whether or not a pokemon is shiny depends on who is hatching it, and isn’t actually decided until it hatches. So, using some tools you can actually sift through your eggs without hatching them to pick one that’ll be shiny for you. Or you can get someone to hatch it in their game so that it will be shiny.
Okay, here we go. Each egg (and pokemon, but we only really care about eggs) has an SV, or Shiny Value. It’s just a number between 0 and somewhere in the 4-5k range that helps decide if it’ll be shiny; we’ll call it the ESV. Lower or higher is no better or worse, it’s just an ID. Similarly, each trainer has an SV (their TSV) in the same range. When an egg hatches, if the TSV matches the ESV exactly then BAM! shiny time! What this means is that if you can find out your TSV and your egg’s ESV ahead of time, you can pick to only hatch the shinies.
Now this means you can join one of the many TSV exchange communities, get yourself “instachecked” and get your TSV and ESV’s. Then you can find someone with a TSV matching your ESV and ask them to hatch your eggs for you (and help people that have ESV’s matching YOUR TSV too!)
I personally use the reddit TSV exchange  . Join up, get yourself on the registry and start getting your shiny on! Registry
Now for those of you that want to do your own instachecking, there’s a few technical steps and some requirements. 1. You’ll need a friend (or another 3ds also running X/Y) 2. A computer with a wireless card (supported by WinPCap, which is almost all of them)
If you’ve got these, then you’re all set to get started.
Go to this thread  and follow the instructions to get yourself up and running with Instacheck.
Once it’s installed, open up InstacheckHotspot.exe
It will ask for a 1. Network Name (SSSID) 2. Password 3. Shared Connection
(For me, I chose SSID: Prov, password: ProvsPassword)
Tumblr media
The network name can be whatever you want, but should not match anything else nearby. The password can also be whatever you want, but it has to be at least 8 characters long. The shared connection should be whatever network adapter you use for your internet connection. To find out what that is go to start and type in “Network Connections”. A shortcut to View Network Connections will show up. Just look for whichever one is your internet’s. (Mine is Wireless Network Connection since I’m connecting over wifi)
Tumblr media
Once you’ve set all that up, just click “start hotspot”. It should, after a brief delay, give you a confirmation that everything started up.
Now get your 3ds. Go to “System Settings” -> “Internet Settings” -> “Connection Settings”. Remove any wireless networks that you can connect to near your computer. Once that’s done, you have to add the new network you just made (Again, mine was Prov/ProvsPassword). Just add it like any other network using the SSID and Password you chose.
It should run through the connection test and succeed. Once that’s all done, launch Pokemon and go online. Then go into InstaCheck hotspot and click “Start Instacheck”. Then go down to the bottom just above the “Start Scanning” button, and select your wireless adapter.
Then (once you’ve gotten pokemon online) click “Start Scanning”.
Tumblr media
Now just open up a trade with your friend (or yourself) and every pokemon (or egg) that you show will provide an ESV in the “Pokemon Shiny Value” field. To see your TSV, you must show a pokemon that you caught in the wild in YOUR GAME. Show them until you find one that matches your (or your friend’s) SV and hatch away!
Tumblr media
TO WRAP IT UP: Pokemons have an ESV Trainers have a TSV
When an egg hatches, if the trainer holding it has the same TSV as the egg has ESV, it’s a shiny. You can get your ESV/TSV’s from a program called Instacheck.
One last note, if it ever screws up and you’re sure you had a matching ESV and TSV but it’s not shiny, do a soft reset and rehatch it.
Good luck shiny hatching!

Here is a Shiny Guide I made for my fellow members at ATRL and well I decided to let the Tumblr people know about it. Pretty much a sum up of what I do. I mean, I did catch 15+ shiny pokemon by doing this.
Any questions, please feel free to ask! Hope you guys enjoy! :)

More fishing shiny help!
Tumblr media
Hey friends, a new way to easily find shinies has been discovered in XY.
There’s no concrete proof yet, but an NPC mentions finding “rarer” Pokemon by fishing many in a row, many anons on /vp/ are sharing shiny fish (some even multiple in half an hour), and I myself have caught a shiny Relicanth.
Have fun.
edit: Literally two minutes after posting this I reeled in a shiny Skrelp. There’s no way this is just a placebo at this point.

Also cool shiny hunting/fishing notes.
Shiny fishing strategy? I've never heard of that. Do Pkmn with Suction Cups up the chances of getting shinies?
yes !
it works a really easy way you just have to follow some rules:
>Stand in one god damn place. >Fish next to walls or other things that aren’t water to increase your chances of landing a Pokemon.>Landing Pokemon continuously without moving from the spot you’re in will increase the likelihood of encountering a shiny>Use something with the Suction Cups ability to ensure you land a Pokemon>You can either KO OR run, to keep the chain going.
the chain does not break if you encounter another water pokemon. but you should have that suction cups pokemon on the lead in your team !

WOW THIS IS AMAZING. Thank you so much for all of this information!
Hi! I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've never used the PokeRadar before, and I can't seem to find any updated guides for XY online, so would you mind telling me how to use it? Sorry if this is a dumb question, haha.
No problem, it’s confusing and irritating as hell and I’ve only ever gotten 2 shinies out of it in Pearl. Basically, a chain is started when you defeat a pokemon after using the PokeRadar. Once you beat one, the grass shakes again, and if done correctly the next Pokemon you run into will be the same one you just defeated, starting the chain.
The PokeRadar is obtained on the 2nd Floor of Professor Sycamore’s Lab in Southern Lumiose City.
Don’t use the Circle Pad, it’ll break your chain instantly if you’re not on foot (super dooper important to the max and stuff)
Have a lot of Repels on hand. By a lot, I mean that I try to have at least 100 when I start chaining. (I recommend Super Repel. They’re $200 cheaper than Max Repel and only offer 50 less steps of repellant)
Once you find a Pokemon you want, whether it be in hard-shaking grass/flowers or soft-shaking grass/flowers, only enter shaking tiles with the same level of shakitude
Only enter grass patches that are four or more tiles away from you
Never enter tiles that are along the border of the grass
In Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, walking directly up was discouraged since your avatar typically blocked the grass patch north of them. I haven’t run into this problem in X and Y, so it’s possible that it was fixed so nothing appears in that tile, but it’s still a good thing to remember
If you do not see a suitable patch of grass, activate the PokeRadar again. (Run around where you’re sure there are no patches if you need to charge it) You can use it as many times as you like and the chain won’t break, as long as you don’t hit any grass patches that shook
There are four types of shaking grass in X and Y, one more than in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum:
Very light shaking: Pretty hard to notice. These always yield nothing, and break your chain if you have one
Normal shaking: Yields average Pokemon that you’d find on that Route
Hard shaking: Yields rarer Pokemon on that Route
Glittering grass: Contains a shiny Pokemon. If you see this during a chain, it will contain the Pokemon you were chaining.
The reason this method is so effective in catching shiny Pokemon is because every time you increase your chain count, the chance that a patch will glitter goes up. This caps off at a chain of 40, at which the chance of finding a glittering patch is 41 times more likely than finding a regular shiny. This is the equivalent to a 0.5% chance that a grass patch will be glittering in the next group of patches. Since more than one patch shakes, (I’m estimating there’s a maximum of 5 per “roll”) then that’s basically a 2.5% chance of finding a shiny patch. To put that into perspective, in FireRed and LeafGreen, a regular Chansey in the Safari Zone had a 1% chance to appear in its designated area.
(All of these stats come from chaining in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, since an in-depth analysis of X and Y’s PokeRadar probably won’t happen for a while. These steps have been tested and do work though, even if they were tweaked a bit)
Well, that’s basically the full extent of my knowledge on the subject. I’d encourage this ask to be mass reblogged if possible, so curious players can learn about it!
