LONG RANT ABOUT MY CURRENT FAVE CHARACTER INCOMING WOO

Oh my god why do I love Loki so much? Idk, I mean I get obsessed with fictional characters all the time but something is different about this one it’s just more intense than my usual hyperfixations, I think I’m going to be extremely obsessed with him forever, he’s going to be a special interest. He’s just such an amazing character, I regret shitting on marvel so much right now. I love it, I love him, I can’t get enough Loki.

I cannot wait to get agent of Asgard and read it. I’m gonna read that whole thing on a day I swear LOL! I really can’t wait. I can’t stop buying little figures and collectibles of him. I really regret being so, so late to this train. But thank you, thank you, thank you Marvel Rivals. I am so glad that game came out to show me how amazing marvel could really be. And I’m glad my bf liked super heroes to make me play rivals. I know I would have tried it anyways cause it’s free but man, idk if I would have been AS obsessed if it wasn’t for him lol. And this really started because I saw him in the beta, and knew I’d main him because of his playstyle. I literally watched all the marvel movies to know the lore for marvel rivals 💀 I can’t believe I’m this intensely in love with a character that I didn’t think as much of when I first watched the avengers movies. I mean I did like Loki, but idk marvel rivals brought out that love so much more as I learned his personality even more. His sassy quips, and voice lines brought me so much joy, and I giggle at them even now.

Then I watched the Thor movies, ugh. My bf hates Loki for being “evil” but I just found him so incredibly relatable. I can’t imaging hating on him. Sometimes I feel like he and I have such different views on life because of how different our upbringings were. I struggled immensely in my youth and he enjoyed it. His family had money mine didn’t, I felt so uncared for by so many people in my life, he had love. I know that lonely feeling Loki had, being seen and treated as less than other people around him felt so relatable. And you know what? Yeah he did some horrible things, and then he made himself better. I do really believe in change even if you do bad things, he doesn’t fully agree with that. Idk Loki is just everything I love in a character. Zuko is my number one favorite character of all time because of his arc, but Loki really might replace him (I’m so sorry zuko). I just think that Loki is amazing and awesome and he’s my Shayla I cry every time I look at him. Augh.

The History of Loki’s Genderfluidity in Marvel!

Loki’s genderfluid identity within the Marvel universe actually comes from ancient Norse mythology from the time of the vikings, over a thousand years ago. There are Norse myths that describe that, while the god of chaos was born male, he presents himself as both male and female, and uses his shapeshifting powers to transform himself into a woman, such as the time when Loki posed as a handmaiden, and also spent several years in a female form and bore children. The myths refer to him as both a mother and a father.

While Loki presenting as both male and female dates all the way back to Norse Mythology, there wasn't a moment in Marvel comics where Loki seriously spoke about his gender identity until 2014, a whole 52 years after his first appearance in Marvel Comics (and 65 years after his first appearance in Timely Comics).

However, while Loki's female form didn't become an express part of his identity until 2014, traces of his genderfluidity still existed in Marvel comics, even if it wouldn't be expanded upon until much later. In fact, the first appearance of Loki in a female form was back in 1993 in Thor Annual #18, when Loki briefly transforms into a woman.

We see this form again 14 years later in December of 2007, in a Thor comic run that takes place after Ragnarok and all the Asgardians have been reborn, and Loki has been reborn into Sif's body. This comic run is also where the name “Lady Loki” became popularized.

And while there is a brief conversation had by the Warriors Three discussing Loki's gender identity, there still wouldn't be a comic that states this form as a part of his identity for another seven years.

Agent of Asgard, a Loki-centered comic series released in 2014, is a huge moment in Loki's genderfluidity. This is when we really start to see Loki refer his female form as a true part of himself, as first seen in issue #2.

We see this form again in issue #5, where Loki once again describes this form as not just something he can just transform into.

Loki then continues with a female form for a majority of issues #14-16.

While there had been whispers of Loki's queer identity in other comics before this point, Agent of Asgard was huge in solidifying Loki's genderfluidity and really cementing him as a queer character in the Marvel universe. Since then, Loki has carried his genderfluidity on into several other comic series by many different authors:

The term “genderfluid” falls under the trans umbrella, which includes any identity that involves you identifying as something different than what you were assigned at birth. While we still have a long way to go in terms of trans representation in the media, Loki being firmly cemented as a trans character within the Marvel universe is a huge step in the right direction.

Loki is very vocal about identifying as male, and female, and sometimes neither. He doesn't care if you don't get it, or think it's weird. It makes perfect sense to him, and that's all that matters. And he refuses to change his identity for anyone.

I’m kicking myself so hard for not liking marvel before rivals came out. I watched all the movies in preparation for the game, and now I’m so obsessed with it it’s B A D 💀 I love Loki so much he’s definitely on my list of top 3 all time favorite characters. Ughhh I wish I started to like him sooner 😭 I feel dumb lol. At least I got into it at all! I just never thought I’d be the type to like super heroes 😅 now here I am spending a copious amount of money on merch of this man I hope we get marvel rivals I spired figures of him soon I love his designs on that game, I already have 4 funkos of him, gonna get a qposket soon too
