It’ll be hard for the PWHL for a while too bc a lot of college programs can offer better pay, more staff, and less responsibilities right now, which is likely why someone like kessel left, but even with that in mind…cmon

The things with men’s v women’s head coaches in women’s sports is kind of three aspect thing of like
1) it would be nice if the women’s pro sports leagues also had places / priorities to hire women in front office positions where they are often discriminated out of in men’s leagues and unable to get jobs they’re qualified for based on their gender
2) I would like men to prove they can be in a position of power over women to some degree and not be misogynistic about it before coaching them or seeing it as “lesser” than men’s hockey for more reasons than just the pay. That’s not to say men never continue to get these jobs despite being misogynistic - sometimes extremely violently so, that does happen often because systematic protections for women often are flimsy even in women’s leagues. That’s also not to say that women can’t be oppressive or misogynistic and abuse their power. But ultimately if someone about to coach at the highest professional level and we’re not able to call up any women he’s coached before and ask how the vibe was, we like literally can’t even do the bare minimum
3) lets all be so fucking for real if someone applied for a men’s league job having only women’s league experience they would not get the job. There’s a small handful exceptions of this and it’s almost exclusively extremely extremely accomplished women taking roles below their qualification

I like that Vancouver's coach has 20 years of experience as a women's hockey head coach, including professional and national team head coaching experience, and the qualifications for Seattle and Boston appear to be "was free nights and weekends in the winter"
#yeah like it doesn’t bother me that the Vancouver coach is a man because he has a ton of experience in women’s hockey#but it’s like. not a minor thing to not have ANY experience in women’s hockey#becaude it has happened before and will happened again taht these guys come over to coach women and treat them like frail lesser hockey#players. not saying these two guys will and I hope they surprise me and do well#but I think we should put them to the test on that BEFORR they coach the highest level of women’s hockey
