Super Dimension Fortress Macross Influence?
It's hard to say what's intentional or not without direct confrimation but the conclusion of each Splatoon game being backed by a pop song that ends up uniting two peoples who were at war (and sort of still) does bear key similarities to the ending to the first Macross series and "Do You Remember Love?"
Not to say there aren't other pieces of media contemporary and otherwise that have similar occurrences, but it does make me wonder if it was directly a source of inspiration.
Thanks for reading!

An Oddity in Splatoon's Characterisation
The original Agent 3, now "Captain" is an interesting character. From their original status as a player surrogate they have recieved additional characterisation over the games that resolves set ups created through the deep sea scrolls and play in the Octo Expansion and Splatoon 3's single player campaign Return of the Mammalians.
In some ways they are a reflection of the first game's original audience, the intense boss fights in OE reflective of the high powered skirimishing of Splatoon 1, where an engagement could swing on a single button press, and the older yet more powerful Captain could be taken as a nod to the older players who have legacy skills, but other obligations take them away from the game. Further still comments about hygiene, their apparent loyalty to the previous captain, Craig cuttlefish, (even Booyahing a corny joke) all cement them as a character divergent from their original incarnation. Through both play and story the audience is presented with a straightforward identity that shows us how they navigate the world of Splatoon.
This not particularly unique, not even in Splatoon, where all the characters are fairly straightforward in presentation and identity, even if Pearl and Marina are considerably more fleshed out. We see those set ups and payoffs within the games: Marie uses a Charger and is an agent of the Splatoon, and uses one to make an impossible shot in a cutscene in Splatoon 2. Pearl causes an accident during a folk song contest due to her loud voice, she uses it to save Inkopolis in Octo Expansion, and so on. Even newer characters like Deep Cut have these on display very prominently, their extraordinary abilities and identites are very clear in addition to their roles in the fiction as foils.
To boil it down, how main characters in Splatoon show their agency and their identity to the audience is usually through big bombastic moments supplemented by side materials such as Deep Sea Scrolls and dialogue.
There is one character that has had oddly very little of this, and they've been in the games since the beginning: Callie.
This is seen in both in Splatoon 2's single player campaign and the supplemental material Squid Sisters' Stories, where Callie is largely absent and remains so until the finale where the final boss is an iteration on Splatoon 1's Octobot King, and her presence does not have a direct influence on the fight outside of the opening cutscene.
There are also relatively few supplemental materials featuring her relation the world itself. Her counterpart Marie is shown to have a career in radio in 2+3's Deep Sea Scrolls, the Splatune 3 Booklet even containing an interview between her, Marina and Big Man. On the other hand, much of what Callie does and how is left up to inference outside of an in-game blog post featured in the deep sea scrolls in 2 and promotional images from Nintendo, her weapon specifications in Side Order, and her status as an agent being examples of this.
The recent release of Bancala Walker and the concept scenarios and exploration pieces within the book makes this absence even more stark. I'm very curious to know whether there is a cache of ideas that was developed regarding her character that hasn't been used due to various reasons, or if the team just isn't interested in developing her further.
All this to say I think it's very strange how Callie feels underdeveloped compared to the rest of the cast, even if these are all ultimately simple characters in the end.
Thanks for reading!

Final thought: also strange to me is that Callie's parents are never brought up in the "Squid Sisters Stories" short story.

A thought about Octavio's scar.
I think in Splatoon 1 it was first mentioned that Octavio could no longer transform from his swim form, and I'm fairly sure that the idea of that inability is due to his injuries was first introduced in an interview about that game. Octo expansion shows an image of the battle that likely caused them, between him and Captain Cuttlefish, which has me wondering:
Since the scar is green and so too are Octavio's eyes, could the idea there be that he can't transform due to being permanently infused with enemy ink?
Edit: As a followup could that mean there's an intensity of battle that causes issues like that to happen through respawn? Damage that even hurts the little ghost that pops out...? The setting's pretty loose like Dragonball so maybe it was something they didn't feel like following up on.

Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today (TNT)
Given that Callie is apparently responsible for the lyrics in-universe, I wonder if this particular localisation is a nod to Callie's previous, explosive-themed, song Bomb Rush Blush.

Delusion: The idols may not make that much money as performers.
I recall seeing a very ancient clip on YouTube called "the mole" that detailed the expenses of boy bands and pop groups active in Australia in the early 2000s, where things like performance rights, songwriters, hiring musicians, choreographers, and venue costs (I could be misremembering what exactly was mentioned here) cut into the overall pay of the performers, some leaving the industry with not much to show for it.
While I don't think this would ever come up in Splatoon directly, you could infer that things like Callie and Marie having individual careers, or Pearl being obscenely rich act as a bit of a shield from these considerations.
Thanks for reading! :^)
