drown me in young kid knuckles headcanons

knuckles learning how to climb a tree, different fighting stances, learning how to scry along in the raising smoke of the fire at a gathering when telling a story. 

knuckles carving lines into the mud with a stick, drawing anything from his clan to the emeralds to just random patterns of lines. drawing to calm down, drawing to focus his energy.

knuckles feeling the first burn of letting chaos energy course through your very being. scared to try to work its magic again, scared of failing and getting hurt. scared it was going to kill him if he did something wrong. scared chaos wasnt going to like him. feeling that fire, and never wanting to get comfortable with it. never imagining it would be the last thing he would hold onto.

knuckles terrified of the mainland. only knowing lore of what the ancestors spoke of how bad it was for the curious, he was scared out of his wits. the only knowledge he had was of their stories, the artistic, the lively, the vivid storytelling.

knuckles not knowing why everyone disappeared. not knowing what was so important about his job and his destiny. not understanding why anything happened. only having the constant burning comfort of chaos throughout his body tethering him to reality.

knuckles learning english by ear, listening and watching people and how they talk and act. learning how to hide among the public and blend in, not look strange and suspicious. never really learning how to read, just memorizing a few symbols here and there and mainly focusing on memory of the buildings or the objects. 

knuckles stealing for the first time. seven or eight, he hadn’t learned yet that he had to ration his food. soon the island was empty of anything he could eat, and he stole from markets on the mainland. terrified. satisfied. guilty. he learned too quick and easy how to be stealthy and quiet.

knuckles meeting sonic, seeing how kind he was unconditionally. he was still scared and angry and mislead. it was astounding to him how sonic was so nice, even though he had tried to hurt him. the first time he had a friend, acquaintance, someone in ages.

The aggressiveness in Lien-da’s tone convinced Knuckles it was best that he stayed quiet. Soon he tested a small question, “... What did he do? To me, to your..our family...” The Guardian grew uncharacteristically silent and still, taking in his cousin’s words. Again he sounded like some child who didn’t know anything, “What’s the twilight cage?” His memory was a bit foggy, especially if it was something he didn’t want to remember.

Appreciating the lighter change, Knuckles laughed, “Heh, you don’t gotta spoonfeed me.” Taking a look around, his tension relaxed seeing that this part of the Mainland was quiet and nearly empty. “Thanks for choosin’ this spot, cuz’.” Leaning out, he carefully got on the ground and stood straight. “Where to, now?”
