Here is my finished 3D Abstract Animation.
At I made a lot of changes to the idea after creating the story board in order to make the process simpler. I decided to work mainly with geometrical shapes. I left the cell division I did in the beginning part though.
Here are some screenshots of the models and animation process, as well as test renders:

Critical Studies - Animatic
Link to finished animatic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPXg6V6NSZk
My animatic is based on "The Old Man And The Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. While reading this book in middle school I really liked the metaphors it contained and I thought it would be interesting to create something of my own based on it. I also wanted to push myself and draw various backgrounds. The biggest challenge was to do a water environment.
The old versions of my synopsis as well as treatment have already been posted, so here I will show all the references and research I did in order to get the final product, as well as the script, treatment, synopsis and storyboard.
Synopsis:
Act I An old man by the name of Santiago wakes up in the morning, gets ready and heads out to his private dock to set sail and go fishing in open sea waters. Act II Santiago stops his boat when he reaches open sea and starts fishing. After some time of not catching any fish, he slowly starts drifting away from boredom. Suddenly he wakes up to the feeling of his fishing rod slipping out of his grasp. He then notices that the fish that swallowed the hook is a rare species he has never seen before. He reels it out of the water. Act III Santiago places the fish on deck and brings a bat to kill it without damaging it's scales. For a split second he considers sparing the creature, but he immediately decides to kill it. He then goes home. After getting home he replaces a family photo he had on a chest of drawers with a photo of him and the rare fish he caught that day.
Treatment:
Storyline: The story takes place in Havana in present times. It's a hot summer morning. A rich, 60 year old man , by the name of Santiago, is getting ready to leave for his private dock to go fishing. He's been living alone in his mansion by the beach ever since his family left many years ago. You can see a picture of him with his family set on his chest of drawers. At the dock you can see three of his his boats: a large yacht, a sailing yacht and a fishing boat He gets onto his fishing boat and slowly sails away from land. The old man makes his way towards open waters. He patiently waits for his first catch. The colours of the world along with him get a bit desaturated when he kills the fish. With every catch the word gets more desaturated. After some time of not catching any fish, Santiago starts drifting to sleep, however, he suddenly gets woken by the feeling of his fishing rod slipping out of his grip. He grabs it firmly and gets pulled the the side of the boat, nearly falling overboard. After some time of struggling, the fish rises to the surface. The man's expression softens. He stares at the creature in awe, unable to take his eyes off of the wonderful, bright colours of it's scales. The fish is now weak, so he pulls it in the boat and prepares to give it a final blow in the head, with a bat, to kill it. He stops mid action, however, all colours come background can see the hesitation in his eyes. He remains in the position for a couple of seconds, after which he squeezes his eyes shut. He the Quickly opens his eyes while frowning and swings the bat so that it hits the head of the fish and kills it instantaneously . Fastforward to when the man gets home: we see him replacing the family picture he had on a chest of drawers with a picture of him with the biggest fish he caught that day. THE END

SOUND TREATMENT
• Pushing Button • Cloth sound • Boat sound • Fish splashing • Fishing boat starting • Sea waves sound • Large Thump • Pouring coffee • Opening and closing door • Small thud
I have done minor changes to the story after finishing the story board, the difference being mainly the establishing shot, and Santiago sailing away after catching the large fish.

Animatic - progress
I created a story boards on small sticky notes:

I then made a character turnaround and afterwards decided to redraw the storyboard (in digital form) and put in a bit more details, as it will make drawing the animatic a little easier.

Animation Project progress
New treatment:
Title: Two sins
Gabriela Guzikowska
Storyline:
The story takes place in Havana in present times. It's a hot summer morning. A rich, 60 year old man, whose name is unknown, is getting ready to leave for his private dock to go fishing. He's been living alone in his mansion by the beach ever since his family left many years ago. You can see a picture of him with his family set on his chest of drawers. At the dock you can see three of his his boats: a large yacht, a sailing yacht and a fishing boat He gets onto his fishing boat, which visibly cost a lot, and slowly sails away from land.
The old man makes his way towards open waters as the sun rises above the horizon. He patiently waits for his first catch. The colours of the world along with him get a bit desaturated when he kills the fish.
He manages to get a second fish. The world gets even more desaturated.
Finally after waiting long for another catch, his fishing line gets pulled. The old man realises that this catch will be big and struggles not to let go of the fishing rod. He gets pulled to the sid of the boat and nearly falls overboard but manages to catch his balance.
After some time of struggling, the fish rises to the surface. The man's expression softens. He stares at the creature in awe, unable to take his eyes off of the wonderful, bright colours of its' scales. The fish is now weak, so he pulls it in the boat and prepares to give it a final blow in the head, with a bat, to kill it. He stops mid action, however (all colours come back) You can see the hesitation in his eyes. He remains in the position for a couple of seconds, after which he squeezes his eyes shut. He the quickly opens his eyes while frowning and swings the bat so that it hits the head of the fish and kills it instantaneously .
The man heads back to shore. When he gets to the dock, the sun is already setting. He gets off the boat, taking the fish that he managed to catch, with him.
Fastforward to when the man gets home: we see him replacing the family picture he had in his bedroom wth a picture of him with the biggest fish he caught that day.
THE END
Meaning:
The overall meaning of the story is that greed and too much pride can make you lose your humanity and your loved ones. The large fish represents all materialistic things and the picture of the man with his catch represents pride. The fading colours are supposed to show the negative impact those things can have on one's life. That's why all the colours come back for a few seconds when the man hesitates to kill the fish. Its's as if he thought about turning his life around.
Appearance:
The animation style will be “messy” in a way, at first with colours, then in black and white
Target audience:
Adults
I’ve gathered some reference pictures to help me choose a style for the animation

Project Synopsis
This is the synopsis of an animation idea I came up with for my project. It’s inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s book: “The Old Man And The Sea”
PRIORITIES
Gabriela Guzikowska
It's a hot summer morning in Havana. A poor, old man is getting ready to leave the dock to go fishing. He gets onto his old fishing boat, which is in bad condition, and slowly sails away from land.
The old man makes his way towards open waters as the sun rises above the horizon. He patiently waits for his first catch. The colours of the world along with him get a bit desaturated when he kills the fish. He visibly does not enjoy doing his work.
With every next fish he kills, the world loses its' colours and the man's expression becomes duller. Almost sad.
Finally after waiting long for another catch, his fishing string gets pulled. The old man realises that this catch will be big and struggles not to let go of the line, which cuts his palms as it's being pulled by the fish.
He stops mid action, however (all colours come back) You can see the guilt in his eyes. He squeezes his eyes shut as if trying to convince himself to kill the creature. He then takes a deep breath and swing his killing tool. The fish dies.
The man heads back to shore. When he gets to the dock, the sun is already setting. He gets off the boat, taking the fish that he managed to catch, with him and walks away in the distance.
The main character of the story represents all people who work jobs that they do not enjoy at all and that make their lives monotone and miserable. The fading colours represent the decreasing happiness of those people. The old man doesn't find his job appealing, however, he has no choice other than to do it, as it is the only way he can manage alone.

Line Of Action
We were practicing drawing the line of action in poses. Our homework was to draw 15 poses using a timed video with references from “New Masters Academy” on YouTube. After finishing the drawings, I pasted screenshots of the poses.
