i didn't want to bring it up in that post because it felt tone deaf, but as for skizz being in the "cause i'm with friends" universe

i want to sit on it for a bit. i think the only thing that will make me put in the effort of taking skizz out of the story will be something like him doubling down and saying "my mods are AMAZING people." i don't think it'll get THAT bad, but i have a bad habit of planning for worst case scenarios. frankly, if it somehow does go in that direction, and none of the other hermits do anything, then i will be reevaluating my fandom stuff as a whole, not just current wips.

like i said, i don't think it will go there, and i think without that concern, if i don't feel better about the situation, i'll probably just go a route of "this is a character, not the cc." i realize this option is harder in these circles, since it's not fully roleplay like dsmp was, but i think if wilbur, someone who was such a core part and creator of lmanburg and dsmp story/lore, can be turned into My OC Do Not Steal by the fandom, then treating skizz similarly probably wouldn't be much different, ya know?

besides, i'm two degrees of separation from being one of those writers that does a lot of "take two characters and put them in incorrect quotes," so i'm already halfway there anyway!

okay so i came from your ao3 and i was wondering what your opinion on the whole skizz thing is? i’m not gonna stop reading or anything if you answer “wrong” but i am curious

i don't wanna make the same post twice, so i'm gonna reply to the ask in my main and reblog it to my side blog. that way, if people find their way over there from my fic, then they can just see the answer immediately and not have to wait and worry

basically i'm gonna chop this into two sections

a retelling of the entire situation with screenshots and zero personal opinions or takes. i want people to have as much information on everything as possible, since this is something not even three days old, and especially considering people are (understandably) freaking out and either placing blinders on or playing wild games of anon telephone

my opinions, because i agree with bits and pieces of what everyone is saying, but ultimately, there are a couple things i want to add to the discussion (hopefully this won't backfire horribly)

trigger warnings pertaining to things skizz actively said/did

paradox of tolerance

transphobia that can be argued to be ignorance/not malicious

trigger warnings pertaining to people associated with skizz (none of the active hermits/traffic series members)

transphobia

racism

general american conservativsm fuckery

the situation as of extremely early in the morning on June 8th

During a minecraft stream on june 4th, an anonymous viewer dono'd Skizz saying they were a long-time viewer, felt that Skizz had not been doing enough to show his support to the LGBTQ+ community, and wanted him to say "trans rights"

Skizz promptly responded by saying, "this channel is about good times good vibes, and not anything political. I've got nothing against anything, I've driven that home."

Skizz proceeded to upload the vod with that part edited out, and soon after made this comment on it and pinned it

""Hello all, just gonna drop this right here. I wish to clear up some churn over this stream that was just starting to spin a bit out of control, and quickly at that. Simply put, I was feeling really happy and good with the vibes of the stream (As I most often do), and failed to vet a dono msg prior to instantly reading it out loud. The message was centered on my support of the LGBTQ community and more over requesting I explicitly state aloud “Trans Rights”. My response was instant and not totally well thought out. While I do think that there is an unfortunate political dynamic to the LGBTQ community, the word I was actually trying to conjure up was “polarizing”. I could agree whole heartedly but if the position is delivered in a fashion designed to cause pain, discomfort or divisiveness on any level, then please take that somewhere else. This is indeed intended to be a safe space. So to that end, if you want to hang out where the vibes are real and the good times continue to roll, well then I’m looking forward to seeing you at the next stream. If you’d rather be a part of the seemingly endless game of disposition ping-pong, I completely respect that but politely request you all meet at another forum to do so. it was soon discovered that two moderators of Skizz, one of which is apparently the head of his discord, are vocally MAGA, and have made staunchly right-wing if not outright alt-right posts on twitter

BunnyBond has started to delete old tweets and has actively responded to the controversy, posting other tweets containing pride flags and saying they believe in trans rights

I haven't seen any updates about the Tim guy so I can't give anything there

As far as I'm aware, Skizz has not made any other comment, and streamed like he normally does. Other people have mentioned that Joe Hills has been made aware of the situation and has commented that he wants to look further into it.

ZombieCleo also made a nice, heartwarming, Happy Pride speech on a recent stream of theirs. This has (theoretically) nothing to do with the Skizz situation, I just figured that if someone wanted a pick-me-up then this was sweet <3

GRAIN OF SALT TERRITORY: Some people have stated that back during 3rd Life, Skizz was found to be following multiple alt-right people on twitter and was called out for it. He has since apparently unfollowed them, and this situation was largely not talked about again until now, considering recent statements and actions

I say "grain of salt" because I have yet to see any pictures, but some of these users are users who have genuinely been in the fandom since the beginning, not just random anons people are sharing, so I am willing to believe them

So far, as of June 8th, this is everything that has been documented

2. Opinion time

I think both sides of the spectrum in terms of reactions are compounded by the same issue: the state of America as a whole.

A lot of people are downplaying the situation because this was a happy, the boat-is-not-being-rocked space where they didn't have to acknowledge the horrors of one of the most influential countries of the world (negative), and they are firmly planting their feet in denial river so they can keep being in a safe, unpopped bubble

And there's also a lot of people who are going scorched Earth because what Skizz said IS a big deal, and with how fragile minority rights are in the States (for ones that haven't been taken away already), these people do not want play nice and happy Progressivism 101 Teacher to Random Midwesterner Of The Week, especially when others in similar positions have been able to handle these issues more respectfully

As for my opinion on Skizz as a whole, I can't really say one side is better or more "moral" than the other because at the end of the day, these are all queer people who are allowed to form their own opinions on the bigotry they face. Plus, I never was into hermitcraft or the traffic series cause of queer reasons. I guess you can say the shipping falls into that territory somewhat, but for the most part, I was more enthralled with worldbuilding and angst opportunities, so a member of this group not being like a socialist's wet dream isn't making me reevaluate my fandom experience

I realize being a dirty centrist on a topic where the main problem is someone fence sitting too hard is ironic but really my opinion as of right is like someone else said: "not mad, just disappointed"

I don't watch Imp & Skizz. My only interaction with Skizz in videos are Grian's vods. I was never even planning on writing or talking about Skizz outside of some reblogged fanart until recently. My week is not devastated because of this, but I am taken aback and want to give the whole thing room to breathe

I don't think Skizz is intentionally bigoted. I think he's a middle class, privileged white American who's never needed to think about this stuff that much. I think people who want to act like this never happened or be like "ah, Americans, what can you do?" are doing a disservice to themselves and ALSO a disservice to Skizz. The man says he thinks growing as a person is really important to him! Help him achieve that!!

It's also doing a major disservice to his queer friends and coworkers. Like I said, Skizz isn't my Numero Uno Streamer, so I'm not holding out hope my "favorite middle-aged man" is "secretly good deep down," but I AM wanting him to be better for the sake of people he talks to every day!!! These series are, maybe not their main financial income, but a decent chunk of it, and they shouldn't have to pick between living comfortably or eventually being forced to drop something they enjoy doing AND someone close to them

I'm also making my opinion known cause some of the people who are going scorched Earth are annoying me. Very "people will say they want to firebomb a Wal-Mart and then not firebomb a Wal-Mart" vibes frankly

Like, one post that stuck out to me was something along the lines of, "Lol, can't wait for Skizz to get caught doing something Really Bad in the future and have everyone act like this was out of nowhere" and it's like

Seriously? Not only are you implying that you want more people to get hurt than they already are, do you seriously think that mindset is going to foster a safe space for someone to admit something like that? Do you fucking thing a potential victim is going to feel good talking about their experiences knowing people are only listening because it will help them knock Inconsequential Streamer #3764 down a peg? Are you for fucking real?

I will say, though, that this line of thought is not unfounded. Another essay of a post described it better than I could: essentially, if it was just the comment in the vod that was the issue, it would be upsetting sure, but not like, a nuclear bomb. However, it's being compounded with his problematic history and current mod situation, and you can't separate those things

(I think it's so funny that one mod is trying to plaster trans flags over everything like a bandaid but literally has not said anything about their god awful racism. lol. lmao even)

I will admit I'm being optimistic in thinking that letting the situation evolve over the week will have happy ending with a handwritten apology and the mods fired, but be honest hermit/traffic folks, this is what happens when you love to brag about being soooo drama free and chill

The thing is that, I'd love to say that queer and nonwhite fans can speak with their wallets, but hermitcraft is fucking old in the grand scheme of internet things. We are not their primary income as a whole. The more openly queer/progressive mcyters? Sure, but people like Xisuma and Grian and Tango and Doc and the other older to middle-aged youtubers are being funded by either people already similar to them or people who are just entering puberty. Skizz has actively gained subs during this time. I want people to change and grow, but this is a repeated problem in the hc/traffic circles, and I don't blame anyone if this broke the straw on the camel's back

Ultimately, I think unless something even more drastic happens, what's going to need to happen is whatever you're most comfortable with. I have a feeling older, more weathered fans are going to shrug their shoulders and be more forgiving, especially those who have experience dealing with less-progressive people, while younger fans are going to be dealing with some rough emotions in the coming days. I think it's important to remember that both these groups have their own lives and have reasons to behaving the way they do, and any sort argument that hinges inherently on the idea that their instinctive emotions are the problem is not going to be helpful

I think adding "Skizz fans/detractors DNI" to your welcome posts or unfollowing mutuals might be a bit much, but it's still your right to curate your online sphere. I think blocking those who post things you don't like is better, cause I find DNIs fucking dumb, but I digress

At the end of the day, this is subtly a hermitcraft/traffic series problem as a whole, not just Skizz. If you're going to say that people who aren't immediately dropping Skizz are like traitors but your favorite is one of his friends, people who are probably similarly uniformed/problematic, then you are full of shit. I also think that you are allowed to ignore this and keep on as if nothing happened, but then you can't be upset if someone gives you a side-eye over it

Besides, Xisuma has been one of my favorite hermits since forever, so I don't think I have a leg to stand on when it comes to saying if who you like cancels your activist subscription or not

hi i just wanted to say after being in hc fandom for a while, enjoying your hc fics, and then suddenly finding my old Sword gamecard. the hyperfixation Grisped me hard and i went on a deep dive and i was NOT expecting to see a fic written by u in there. AWESOME tho

REAAAAL it happens to the best of us. i truly underestimate and forget how deep i was into SWSH when it first came out. i'm always somewhat thinking about pokemon but occasionally i remember that, oh right, i was ridiculously excited for SWSH. i literally had so much hype for it that it was the reason i revived my dead discord account i had stopped using so i could join a server to talk about it
