haneulih:
( . . . )
this was why he loved when haneul came over as much as did. the sweater, the enthusiasm, the lack of judgement. it was low stress and easy, what more could anyone ask for?
“realism,” he commented, amusement coloring both his tone and expression, as he picked a handful of the snowflakes up. the minute he’d seen them, he’d decided the balcony door was going to be covered in them, that way even if it wasn’t snowing outside, he could pretend it was. “are you going to make constellations, too?”
if he wasn’t as proud as he was, yoongi would probably have christmas music on, and would, in all honesty, probably be humming to it as he decorated. if only he wasn’t so proud. as it was, he was still humming ‘it’s beginning to look a lot like christmas’ quietly as he made his way to haneul, snowflakes in hand.
“just on the balcony,” he replied, a wide grin lighting up his face. something in haneul’s expression made him want to laugh, but he refrained, not wanting to run his decorating companion away so quickly. “so when it’s night time and snowy, i can sit outside.”
there was just something about christmas lights that were comforting. maybe it was the color of the light, maybe it was what they represented, who knew. but he thought having them on the balcony sounded like the perfect way to really top things off. as he thought it, though, he remembered how cold it was outside, and that not everyone was insane.
“i can do that bit on my own, don’t worry. i won’t subject you to the cold for the sake of decorating.”
yoongi’s grin and amusement only seem to make haneul’s smile all the wider — good company had a way of lifting one's spirits and haneul wouldn’t even think about arguing whether or not yoongi was considered good company to be with. he already knew that he was, no questions asked. they’d spent plenty of nights before just the two of them, the sound of constant chattering and laughter filling the apartment into the early hours of the morning. (and something about this reminds him of those times. just the two of them and some wild idea.) yoongi’s question has one of haneul’s brows cocking high on his forehead, the corner of his mouth lifting in a playful sort of smirk. “What kind of amateur would I be if I didn’t?” a snort of laughter escapes him, picking one of the plastic snowflakes from out of yoongi’s hands when the other is close enough and holding it up to examine it a little more closely. “You’re going to sit outside when it’s snowing at night?” the look that he gives yoongi is skeptically incredulous. sure, there are plenty of people who enjoy the cold weather, but haneul is almost certain that those sort of people are some different species of human that science has yet to classify. (because that was the only thing that made sense, wasn’t it?) “You know, if I don’t hear from you for longer than a few days, I’m going to assume you’ve frozen out there.” and suddenly his expression is returning to that wide, somewhat goofy, grin. “Just leave me something nice in your will, yeah?"

( . . . )
Uui is careful with his gaze, it transitions smoothly from the coffee to his cake and up, to look at Haneul. He’s been told he tends to stare and staring can be unnerving or flattering depending on the person being stared at. He’s just observant and can’t help himself. So, he can’t help himself when he stares at the way Haneul switches his answers, escalating into the one that seems most fit and he gets the same feeling of when he’s flipping through a sketchbook - process.
“My schedule isn’t so busy today.” He smiles. Wider when the other laughs because hey, that’s pretty and he loves when he’s really hearing someone laugh for the first time. “No, that doesn’t sound boring.” He sips at the coffee first, then the milk, and then the tea - which he sticks with after the taste test, taking small, birdlike bites of the tart. “I usually have a few visitors a week so, really, I don’t mind anyone coming and going.”
Well. “As long as they’re not trying to take pictures.”
It takes him ten minutes to get halfway through the tart, savoring the chocolate mousse mixing pleasantly with the milk and coffee, the raspberries cutting through the sweetness nicely. “We could go now, if that’s okay with you? After I finish this up..” He gestures at the tea, the little blossoms settling at the bottom of the cup.
Haneul continues to watch Uui closely as he goes about what looks to be some kind of ritual of testing the three drinks before finally settling on one. He's not nearly as aware of how unnerving of an action it is as the other seems to be, however. His excuse is that he's simply curious, most things in the universe have an explanation; x happens because of the result of y and z combining. People, however, didn’t seem to follow the same formula and often times the reason for why the did the things they did was simply “just because” or “I don’t know.”
(Neither of which were ever a good enough answer for Haneul. There was always an itch in the back of his mind, always a little voice asking “but why?!”)
If there’s one thing that Haneul’s extended state of couch-surfing has him accustomed to, it’s various people coming and going when they please. Being a guest in someone’s home doesn’t really afford one much say in the happenings that take place in it. And despite how close he might have been with the friends he’s stayed with, he never once thought to invite anyone else over.
On top of the actual personal space he’d be getting, it’d be equally as nice to have someplace to comfortably spend time with people.
“That’d be weird.” The sentiment is mingled between quieter laughter and in the time that Uui takes to get through his tart, Haneul finishes the piece of bread in front of him and orders another — whether it’s because he’s actually hungry, or he’s just trying to expend anxious energy, it’s hard to tell.
(probably a little of both.)
“Yeah.” Once again he nods enthusiastically, swallowing down his mouthful of food before continuing. “That would work great. I don’t have anything else going on today,” He pauses a beat, mentally going over his schedule, “I’ve got a project to work on, but I’ll finish it later tonight.” Haneul adds, giving a dismissive wave of his hand, clearly, he isn’t too concerned with it at the moment.

( . . . )
He’s barely fazed. Of all the reactions he could have gotten, it’s actually quite mild and he smiles amiably back - an instinctive response. “That’s who I am.” It’s probably better that Haneul doesn’t quite remember him, easier without all the details of the past to complicate the present. However, from past experiences, Uui has learned there needs to be a careful balance of business versus casual in these situations.
“So…”
The warmth of the cafe has him shedding off his layers, mask first, coat next, he fidgets with his hat too before deciding to leave it on. There’s a pause in their conversation when the waitress comes by to take his coffee order - a medium roast pour over, a steamer, peach blossom tea, and a raspberry chocolate tart (less than his usual, he was really holding himself back).
“So, I have an empty room in my apartment. It’s probably about a half hour from campus.”
Uui arranges each cup the server brings in order, coffee first, milk, then the tea, all the handles aligned to the right. It looks leisurely, the way he does it, slow, gentle movements of his hands, fingertips tracing the rims of each mug.
“We can schedule a time for you to come around and take a look if you’re interested?”
haneul watches in relative silence while uui gets settled in the seat opposite of his own, then makes a rather intricate order to the waitress with ease. (who, he is sure, then hurries off to repeat the order to the barista, who begins whipping it together with the same ease that uui ordered it. a repeating sequence with a constantly changing variable. for the shortest of seconds, haneul wonders the odds of two strangers having the same custom drink order.) (but too many more varibles come into play and he saves the venture down that rabbit hole for a time when he's not sitting across from his potential future-roommate.) by the time uui has finished his explanation, the waitress returns with his order, handing it off to uui so that he can arrange it rather precisely on the table. and with the way that haneul watches this happen -- his brows knit together in concentration and his eyes darting between uui's slender fingers as they move -- it seems more as though he trying to solve some kind of puzzle than just casually watching other. the server leaves to tend to her other tables and haneul takes lull in activity as a chance to speak up. "yeah, that sounds great." he nods his head enthusiastically, "it's closer than my place now." a beat, correcting himself. "where i live now." another beat, another correction. "where i'm staying right now." more accurate. currently, where he was staying wasn't much more than a loveseat that was too small for his lanky frame in the living room of an extremely gracious friend. but even their hospitality only extended so far and haneul's time had begun to run short. "you're schedule is probably busier than mine is, right?" and considering haneul's schedule outside of his classes was fairly nonexistent, it wasn't too far off of an assumption to make. "i don't really have much going on -- does that sound boring?" laughter begins to work its way into his words, and even more so onto his features. "suppose that's a decent quality in a roommate, isn't it? mild social life, there wouldn't be a worry of many strangers coming over."

( . . . )
this was yoongi’s least favorite part of the year, the part where it felt like it could snow, but didn’t. he had never seen the point in cold without snow, then it was just miserable outside with no positives. he could feel it in his toes that he’d been outside for a little too long just as he heard the door open. another drag from the cigarette, he didn’t like for people he knew to see him smoking much.
he couldn’t keep a faint smile off his face as he turned his head to look at haneul where he stood at the door to the balcony. “my plan is not to be able to tell it’s my apartment by the time we’re done,” he replied as he pushed himself out of the chair, cigarette put out and forgotten about. there were more important things than smoking.
there wasn’t much he took the time to really think about, but he was very aware of how grateful he was to have haneul in his life, and that things between them were so easy. even if it meant that his winter wonderland would include a miniature galaxy. thinking about it, that would probably be a nice addition, really. star-gazing without any of the discomfort of being outside.
yoongi knew he took the holidays too seriously, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. growing up, his mom had stopped celebrating, so as soon as he moved out, he made sure to do as much as possible. he didn’t care about the holidays themselves, but more about the season and the happiness that they created in so many people.
“you just wanted a way to leave your mark, didn’t you?” he joked, dropping down on the couch, directly in the middle of the boxes of lights. immediately, he started picking boxes up, trying to find a particular one. he’d bought different kinds, and probably had really gone overboard. “should we save the icicle lights for outside or no?” he asked, looking up to make direct eye contact.
even standing in the open doorway, haneul feels the cool chill of the air outside and he carefully pads backwards as yoongi finds his way back inside, closing the door behind him and sealing them inside of the much more comfortable heat of the apartment. "i don't think you'll have any problem with that." haneul gives a snort of laughter, tossing his bag of stars and planets into the mix of plastic snowflakes (ironically enough, most of which seem to exactly alike.) before shedding his coat -- dressed rather festively in deliberately tacky christmas sweater that included rockets, planets, and satellites right along aside its printed snowflakes, christmas trees, and santas.
(let no one ever say that jeong haneul didn't know how to dress for an occasion.)
(over dress, even sometimes.)
"think of it as providing a little bit of realism." haneul grins, all teeth and all the way to his eyes, following the other to the pile of lights.
(and, okay, maybe he did want to leave a little mark. especially if he was going to be the one pitching in to help with this endeavor. doesn't an artist always leave their signature somewhere?)
"i'll arrange some of them how they should be tonight."
haneul's head cocks to the side at the question, one of his brows arching high on his forehead -- nearly hidden under underneath the snapback that so rarely leaves the top of his head.  -- as he gives yoongi a questioning look. "we're putting lights outside, too?" he holds yoongi's gaze for a moment before then moving back and forth between it and the pile of lights.
that did explain why there were so many.

star light, star bright
( @ihsunmi )
It's not at all a short trip that they have tonight to get to what Haneul has continued to refer to as nothing more than the perfect spot. Just the right distance outside of the city that the pesky ambient light doesn't throw everything off too much -- which is often the problem with doing this from his roof like he normally would, too many lights from the city making it near impossible to see anything worthwhile. -- and close enough that he can still manage to get a little bit of sleep after all is said and done. But the visibility is clear, the air has just the right amount of autumn chill to it, and the sky is supposed to look particularly brilliant tonight of all nights. So, despite an early morning lecture the following day, Hanuel takes the long train ride with Sunmi at his side, sticking close to her much smaller frame when they briefly have to change trains, not wanting to lose sight of her in the chaos of late evening traffic. He dozes off a few times along the way, for only the shortest of minutes -- he doesn't sleep well most nights, he hasn't really ever for as long as he can remember -- but otherwise keeps himself occupied; with a steady supply of sweet bread and spicy squid chips from inside of his bag (both of which he silently offers to Sunmi multiple times during the ride), a color-matching puzzle game on his phone (which causes Hanuel to let out quiet sounds of frustration on particularly difficult levels.), and his Instagram feed (which he updates with a selfie of the two at the beginning of their adventure. #StarSearch) until they finally arrive and he's dragging his things off of the train and out of the station. The aforementioned perfect spot is still a short cab ride from the station where they're dropped off and once they finally reach their destination, their fare paid for and the taxi cab nothing more than a pair of taillights in the distance, Haneul begins to unload things from one of his bags. (The smaller of the two, but still holds a surprising amount of things; A small stack of various Astronomy textbooks and library books. A laptop and small portable external battery pack. A tablet and sync cables. More snacks -- sour worms, more sweet bread, and three bottles of water. A poorly folded blanket. And his own jacket -- a black flight jacket decorated with various patches.) "It's a lot clearer tonight than I thought it was going to be." Haneul grins wide and somewhat goofily, genuinely excited about the turnout of the weather. He pulls his snapback from off his head long enough to comb his fingers through the somewhat brittle bleached ends of his hair, pushing the strands back off his forehead before putting his hat right back on. "I thought we were going to end up looking at a bunch of clouds again." He's starting to think he should have majored in Meterology.... or maybe actually use the weather app on his phone.

The air is colder than Haneul remembers it normally being this time of year, wool jacket pulled tightly around his body as the wind whips around him, sending fallen leaves blowing in every direction -- it's one of those days that remind him the summer is long gone and the winter is waiting for them just around the corner. There's an odd kind of familiarity about the entire trip; the way that sidewalk gravel crunches underneath his Nikes, the row of shops that likely haven't changed and wouldn't change for decades to come -- the staples of the community, the rumble of cars passing him by. This is something he's done before, and there's comfort in the familiar. (Just like the rest of the universe, Haneul is a creature of pattern. Unconscious actions that have turned themselves into habit. Sequences of events eventually repeating themselves until a greater force comes around and creates new change.) The repeating pattern becomes all the more apparent to Haneul when he finally reaches Yoongi's apartment and it looks just like a snapshot out of his memory. The buildings hadn't changed, the decor hadn't changed, he could barely tell if the few cars parked outside had changed. (It certainly didn't look it, but the brain was a strange organ and Haneul's was currently stuck on finding repeating sequences.) At Yoongi's door, he hesitates for a moment. He's not entirely sure if he's supposed to knock. Social convention would definitely dictate that he should, and were his mother here she would have his head for even considering just barging into someone's home. (Although, in his defense, he was invited over. Not technically just barging in.) But, Yoongi and Haneul's relationship with one another existed in a place that most social convention just didn't cover and the longer that he thinks about it, the more he realizes that knocking would have been... weird. Instead, he reaches for the unlocked door and lets himself in, sneakers discarded at the entryway as his eyes scan over the empty space. There's clear signs that Yoongi's somewhere; the massive amount of Christmas lights, the open Youtube stream, the glow in the dark snowflakes (to which he had his own matching bag of stars, picked up along the way and shoved into his jacket pocket.) and it takes only a few seconds for Haneul to piece together where the other is. (There go those pesky repeating patterns again.) "Are you decorating your house, or the whole street?" Haneul questions from the entryway to the balcony -- in his head, he's keeping warm by not stepping out onto it. -- both of his hands slipping into the pockets of his jacket only for one to return a moment later holding his bag of glow in the dark stars and planets. "I didn't know if this was a BYO-Decoration party, so I thought I'd play it safe." He adds with a wry grin.

[ 19:23 ✉ ★h ] {attachment} you know you want to help [ 19:23 ✉ ★h ] they glow in the dark [ 19:24 ✉ ★h ] and i have the nasa youtube channel already open?
yoongi was pretty sure he didn’t have to bribe him to come, but it didn’t hurt to throw in an added bonus, right? especially when it wasn’t december yet and he was getting holiday decorations up already. it was the one time of year he really embraced his soft side. not that it really mattered, since no one from school that he didn’t trust would see this.
he’d had some american christmas music playing for about a week, and a lot of the time while he was home alone, he’d catch himself humming along. at least he was alone. once haneul got there, though, he needed to make sure to pay a little bit more attention to himself.
all 15 packages of christmas lights were opened and tangled on the couch and there were a few boxes of glow in the dark snowflakes on the table, in front of his laptop, which was truly streaming a view of earth from space. he stared down at all of it and smiled to himself, before realizing how much he was overdoing it. it was good he’d shut himself down before he’d made cookies.
after yoongi reminded himself that he needed to reign it in a little bit, he grabbed a sweater, double checking to make sure the door was unlocked before he stepped out onto his balcony to smoke a cigarette.

( . . . )
A roommate sounded like a good idea at first, at least, before he had to go through all the trouble of messaging every person on his contact list that he had the slightest bit of trust in. By the end of it he’s exhausted, on brink of a massive migraine, and ready to nap for the next ten hours. Too bad he scheduled the meeting at 4:45 PM and looking at his phone now, he needs to leave in the next ten minutes to get to cafe on time. The thing is, Uui doesn’t actually need a roommate. He’s got his internship, commissions, freelance works, which are all enough to keep him more than sustained even without the help of his parents. So the true, honest reality of it is how badly he deals with loneliness and filling the empty void (in the form of that extra bedroom in his apartment) seemed like the best solution at this point. It feels obnoxious and Uui really despises having to go incognito, but he’s still got a throbbing headache that’s threatening to grow with each added human contact so he’s got a cap and a mask and probably looks really suspicious. They’ve met before, just a few grazes here and there because of mutual friends, but it’s been awhile - maybe a few years now and as amiable as he’d been with all his ex’s friends, they’re not that friendly with one another. He smiles wide when he takes a seat, tucking down the black facial mask under his chin so it’s full on visible. “Hey, did you wait long?”
He's nowhere near high score territory, his features knit together in obvious concentration at the screen of his phone, large gold-framed glasses sitting low enough on his nose that he has to push them back up to a comfortable spot when he finally decides to look away from his game and up at the person joining him. Haneul is quite possibly the worst person when it comes to remembering names. He could remember faces down to a T -- a certain constellation of freckles on a person's cheek, a predominant Cupid's Bow, the smallest dimple by someone's eyes when they smile. -- but fumbled embarrassingly with having to recall the names that went with them. When Uui's name had appeared in his inbox, only the vaguest of images came to mind. However, once Haneul got a good look at him, a lightbulb turns on and realization flashes across his features. The fuzzy photo in his memory clears up and he recognizes Uui immediately. And not simply because he hadn't lived under a rock for his entire life and had seen the others face enough times on television and on magazine covers. They'd been part of the same small social circle briefly, the object of one of Haneul's friend's devotion. A friend of a friend. (Another real-life version of Telephone -- although this one is a bit more abstract.) "Oh. That's who you are." He blurts out -- as tactful as ever, and it takes him a beat to realize his own social ineptitude. "I mean, no. I haven't been here long. Ten minutes." There's the telltale click of his phone locking just as he slips it into the pocket of his jeans, opposite hand waving dismissively. "Time's all relative, anyway." Roughly twenty minutes. Long enough to be halfway through a second piece of sweet bread, tearing another piece off of it to eat.
