One week ago today, I lost a dear friend.

I got Luna in a very dark point in my life. I was 13 years old and going through serious clinical depression. I wasn’t eating, couldn’t get out of bed, I felt as if I truly had nothing to live for. I had shut myself off from everyone and everything. 

Five days before Christmas 2005, my mother dragged me along on her shopping, little did I know that this was the day that I would meet my guiding light. We had stopped off at a pet store on the way home to pick up a few supplies, and while I begrudgingly roamed the aisles, a chirp caught my attention.

There, in a cage with 5 others was a single beautiful yellow cockatiel. She chirped and paced the perch and as I drew closer I fell in love with this colourful new friend. For the first time in what felt like forever, I smiled a real smile.

We brought her home that day and the adventure began.

It wasn’t easy at first. What the 13 year old me didn’t realize was that most birds in pet shop cages come from bird mills. Horrible places where they are kept in cramped conditions with very little human contact. Luna was fearful and while she enjoyed some company, lashed out in fear when you got too close. I began sitting with her every morning. Talking to her. Telling her all about me. Singing to her (her favorite song was “lullabies of birdland”)

Little by little she began to trust me, and little by little she helped me too. She gave me a reason to get up every morning. She became my Moon, my light in the darkness. I named her Luna.

For 11 1/2 years she was my constant companion. We shared so many moments together. She was there through my depression, my graduation, moves, my sister’s battle with cancer (1 year cancer free!). She was my favorite “art supervisor” (despite her pen/pencil/paintbrush thieving ways) and probably the cutest (and most effective) alarm clock to have ever lived.

 I am thankful every day that we did this project (even if 4 months after starting Hats on Luna she decided she was done with her modeling career lol) I will always look back on these posts and remember her hilarious spirit and how sweet she was. She brought so much light into my life and I am forever in debt. 

On March 27th 2017 at 8:15 PM (AT) Luna passed away peacefully in my hands listening to her favorite music. She spread her wings for the last time, smiled up at me with her beautiful, signature Luna smirk, and then she was gone.

I will miss you every day my sweet girl.

In light of the tragic shooting that took place last night in 2 hours from me in Moncton, New Brunswick--claiming the lives of 3 police officers, wounding two more--we decided to postpone this weeks Hats on Luna post. (new hat next thursday) We take our hats off, in honor of the brave policemen and women that put their lives on the line for our safety. We pray for the families of those 5 fallen heroes, 3 of which will never see home again. Please send your thoughts and prayers to the New Brunswick RCMP who at this hour are still on active duty trying to apprehend the shooter.

When will this senseless violence end?
