Hey Tumblr, you want to see something? I was going through my old sketchbooks today and found the original sketch idea of the conductor before I refined him and showed him to the project.

Could I ask about your ideas for hat kid’s backstory? We never got one in the final game and I’ve always been curious whether there were concepts of it.

There was a time when more story and a larger narrative were considered for the game.But we never really had deeper discussions about it during my time on the project. But when discussing adult hat kid I kept asking myself “where are these kids parents?”

For me it started when we were discussing the evolution of the player hub. In one of my animatics, we see Hat Kid's home. That's actually where it started because one of my first suggestions for a hub was this recreation of hat kid's home in this kind of white void.

I don't truly know what Jonas's ideas for her back story were but I do know that he wanted the overall narrative to be light hearted and fun, just like the rest of the game.

I was always drawn to the idea that Hat Kid was running away from her parents and away from home. Being the daughter of these famous time travelers who fixed time and were part of Tim's agency for the creation and maintenance of time itself.

She was under a lot of pressure to grow up and be more than what she wanted to be, which was a kid with a telescope that dreamed looking up at the stars, and it got to a point where she couldn't take it.

That's where Tim's friend came in and began pushing her throughout time wherever they needed her, even if she was reluctant or even unwilling.

It wasn't until after meeting the shapeshifter, her shadow that she would finally accept her regrets, and her role as a time traveler. And she would go on to meet a lot of friends along the way such as Timmy with his psychic abilities including seeing possible futures, and Mustache girl with her larger vendettas to get things done.

In the end, she would have a tea party with shadows and birds who traveled on trains. Mobsters and royalty. Friends she had come to trust, and even others once thought foes, now sitting with her having tea and laughing among the stars.

And then she would go back to where everything started, open the front door, and be back home.
