Weekly Log (week 12 |  12 April)

Motion move in a physical way I meet difficult on the motion Tommy shake its head, the displacement of the head easily happen. And I found a reference on dogs shaking their head, and realize that the shaking motion is always moving circlewise. Therefore, I draw a circle for supporting and the motion of shaking head become very smooth.

Changing on the title part During production, there are 2 problems which bother us for a long period: 

Our group has been confused with the Title scene since the beginning of the production. As we cannot decide the best way and time to show the title in the animation.

Besides, we are also confused on how to show the audience that Tommy is part of Pinky. The transition and content are not confirmed.

We discuss with a draft flowing shows on Animatic, but we found it was not perfect. But finally, we have confirmed with the flowing and solve the above problem this week. By deleting some shot and changing the motion of Tommy, it has become the transition from scene 1 to 2, the flowing also connect smoothly. Besides, since there is nothing on the frame after Tommy jumps up, therefore the title can show directly after this shot. We feel lucky that everything matches together and it looks smooth!  (Below is the new version)

 Weekly Log (week 11 |  5 April)

Trying on different action When I was working with the shot Tommy eating food furtively in the wardrobe, I was confused about its reaction on being found by Pinky. The 1st and 2nd GIF is not the best reaction because it will look repeatedly to the shot follow by. That’s mean here should not show Tommy is shocked, it reaction should be worry and misgiving to the sound coming nearby. Finally, I redraw the action for this shot to make sure Tommy’s reaction is correct (3rd GIF).

Working on shots with two characters This week also work on the part conclude with two characters. Improving through the experience last week, timing and motion are important to avoid not matching up. In order to work efficiently, I ask groupmate who work with Pinky send a draft of her motion first, then I can accurately draw with Tommy action.

Weekly Log (week 10 |  29 March)

Difficulty in the interaction between two characters This week had finished the motion part on Tommy from S4 to S6. After working on these 3 scenes, I found that S4 and S5 are easier to count on the frame and motion since Tommy is the only character in every shoot. However, when I was working on Scene 6, we have to count it carefully on the interaction and timing on both Tommy and Mike. But still, it was successful to finish with Tommy part.

Further improvement Next, I am going to work on S1-S3 on Tommy part. Which there are also conclude interaction on two characters- Pinky and Tommy. After working on S6, I have already practiced on how to handle this kind of shoot and will try to do better on timing and framing.

Weekly Log (week 9 |  22 March)

Production on Tommy’s motion S5 is mainly the part of Tommy running around in the restaurant, therefore working in this scene can improve better on the motion of Tommy.  The way he eats the food is similar to a pig and dog. And I try to work a draft animation with a better time frame on motion first. And after confirming the motion is correct, I can directly work on outlining.

Weekly Log (week 8 |  15 March)

Production! Practice on the skills This week starts the production on S4 as it helps us to practice on the skills in animation. Working on the most difficult part can help to recall our memory on timing and motion, or even improve on skills.  (The 1st GIF) Working on the motion Tommy climb up to the table and smell with food. Which is a good starting to practice on timing since there is both slow and fast motion. After getting feedback, there is some correct on the reaction before he realizes the food by smell. (The 2nd GIF)

Weekly Log (week 7 | 8 March)

Storyboard (Version 4) Finally, the storyboard is confirmed! And here is the S2 / S3 part which concludes with :

By changing some small details, the overall flowing can be more connective and readable. After discussing and getting feedback, the storyboard can show how the story is going on. Although thinking of every shoot is the most difficult part of a production, I still enjoy working on the storyboard very much! 

The inspiration of shoot always works out when I was drawing the storyboard. A complete storyboard helps to operate better during the production, besides, it looks like I have worked out a storybook!

Weekly Log (week 6 | 1 March)

Animatic The animatic was finished for interim presentation. There is still improvement to work on after some feedback. Audiences do not understand why Tommy is the tummy of Pinky which we have to correct this scene to be more readable.

My Notes Personally, I always work on some notes to make sure I remember what should I correct after every tutorial. Before, I just write down some words, but I found that notes including words and drawing are better to recall myself.

Weekly Log (week 5 | 22 Feb)

Motion Testing  This is the motion when Tommy Shaking the chips. Tommy shaking left and right repeatedly. But still, the motion needs to improve on the frequency, it should shake with different speed, sometimes slow and sometimes fast.

Storyboard Development (Version 3) 

After feedback and changing on flowing, the storyboard is almost confirm. Working for the part showing Pinky and Tommy relationship and the montage part. There is many changing on these two part since I want the content look connected. Especially the ending of S2 and S3:

S2 ending :

The action of Tommy enjoying the food in the jar is connected to why Pinky is fall down. The food is suffuse on floor because Tommy eating around, which cause Pinky kicks on them and fall accidentally when she trying to fit her dress.

S3 ending :

Connect with the montage part Pinky doing exercise, here shows how Pinky dislike Tommy and kick him away. Then a series of resistance to Tommy, and finally, Pinky shows no more patient and lock him up.

Weekly Log (week 4 | 15 Feb)

Character Design  (Model sheet / facial expression / pose / color test )  This week I was working with the setting of Tommy. Drawing with the details about Tommy, Tommy is one and a half head tall, also conclude with some trait such as its nose is the navel. The facial expression and pose show how Tommy acts in different cases. At last, there is a color test of Tommy, I try different color which the color use present with a different impression. I have chosen the color similar to human skin so it can stick close to the setting - Tommy is the part of Alice. Some color show Tommy as a dog and some show as a pig. Finally, we choose to use the one with pink color since it is sharp and can present Tommy’s sparky characteristic.

Weekly Log (week 3 | 1 Feb)

Focus on the Storyboard

As we have discussed with a new storyline as “ Fit Fat”, therefore I started working on the storyboard. I am handling with the montage part that shows the relationship between Alice and Tommy, it also shows how they get along with each other. As this part is using Montage method, they are in cut-shot which showing each event for short period. The main business of Alice - fitting the dress is inserting into the montage in order to recall the audience.

We hope that this part can present how Alice dislikes Tommy and how Alice is being annoyed in her daily life.

Character Design Confirm - Tommy And finally! This week we confirm with the character design of Tommy. This character design is based on both dog and pig. Its looking is like a pig but it acts like a dog. The shape of Tommy is chubby and it is soft too. Even Tommy is round and fat, its motion is supple.

Weekly log (week 2 | 25Jan)

New idea 

I was suddenly inspired with an idea that adding a new character into the story. The obesity pill. This character appeared in the middle of the story, who also is as an enemy of Tommy. As we know that obesity pill can help for losing weight quickly, but it is harmful to our body

By its function, Alice loves it very much and pet it like she does to Tommy. Which cause Tommy on jealousy, and bite Alice unintentionally.

 However, we still have the problem of not yet explaining the relationship between Tommy and Alice. Therefore, we decide to change the story from the beginning.

New Storyline

This story has been changed with talking about fit with fat. Before it was a story talking about the relation of Alice and Tommy, how their connection changed because Alice wants to keep fit. But now the story begins with that Alice is not fitting with a dress and her grudge cause on the appearance of Tommy - her bothersome tummy. 

This is a story of how the girl get along and accept with her fat.

Weekly Log (week1 | 18Jan)

About the storyline:

Our group is discussing the detail of every scene. Besides, we also think of adding more interesting interaction between the two characters as it may increase the tension of this animation. However, we are confused about the flowing on the story since it spends too long to explain the opening. According to the previous storyboard, it is not clear to understand with the relation between two characters: Alice grows bigger and fat when Tommy keep on eating. Therefore we are still discussing another storyline of this story.

About the character design: Base on the previous design of “Tommy”, we have chosen some of them and develop it. The design maintains with the shape and characteristic which looks adorable and supple. Providing with the impression of Tommy that is round, smooth and chubby.  I have developed the character based on the one looks like a combination of dog and pig. By adding with a pair of ears, it looks like a piggy while it acts like a dog. 

About the scene design In order to raise a hilarious feeling for every part, our group plan to design with our own style on the scene design. I have done some research on the behaviour of dogs in Youtube and apply them to the scenes. Beside, I also think of what we usually do with our belly, such as hitting them like a drum. These researches have helped a lot on inspiration and raise audience resonat with the story when it shows factuality.
