Corvus smiled at the dwarf’s accent. It was sort of quaint.
“You’ve got me all figured out, haven’t you? As for Erebor...”
He leaned back in his chair as he thought about the question. Really, his enjoyment of a city entirely depended on his mindset. If he was in a contemplative sort of mood, a small quiet village was the perfect place to find himself. But on the contrary, if he was feeling low, a large kingdom full of hustle and bustle always served as a nice distraction.
That’s what it had been about here lately. Distraction. Calliban seemed to know this too as he’d been giving Corvus the same side eye that one might observe in a disappointed parent. The old crow had started waiting outside while Corvus gave his patronage to the various bars and taverns he came across. Perhaps he’d grown tired of watching his master fall victim to old vices time and time again.
As for Erebor, it had served the young alchemist well in his never ending quest for emotional avoidance. The kingdom had plenty to do and was full of attractive young dwarves to waste his time on. But at night, when he was alone, things were different. Quieter. The space noise would normally fill was emptied and left in its place was plenty of room for Corvus’s thoughts; a sentiment that didn’t exactly leave the alchemist sleeping easy.
After taking a moment, he regained eye contact with the dwarf and smirked.
“I like it just fine! Never a bad thing when a kingdom has such a rich supply of beauty,” the alchemist chuckled, giving the dwarf a playful look.
Corvus wasn’t about to open up to this perfect stranger. He could barely let himself think about his feelings let alone someone else. No, he’d just distract and avoid. Same as always. He lifted his mask again and took another sip of his drink.
“I heard tales as a boy about the great kingdom under the mountain.” He glanced around at the soggy, horrible tavern they found themselves in and chuckled.
“I’d say most of them live up! And what about you?” He asked, propping his head up on his hand.
“How does Erebor compare to the Blue Mountains?“
It was one of the few places the young alchemist hadn’t been, and he had to admit he was curious.
Corvus.
Corvus had noticed the dwarf enter the tavern, but honestly didn’t pay him any mind. In that moment, the masked alchemist was only focused on the tall glass of ale in front of him. Weaker than he usually liked, and he suspected it’d been watered down. Not unlikely given he’d already been there a few hours. Still, he wasn’t in the mood to argue with the barkeep so he left it be. He lifted his mask a bit to take another swig.
This town wasn’t awful by any means, but he’d be glad to leave it. Corvus didn’t like staying anywhere for too long. He got restless. In fact, he’d been planning to take off sometime the following afternoon, or possibly the next day depending on how much he drank. Sure, he could whip up a hangover cure if he wished, but he really didn’t feel like putting in the effort to do so. Potions took time. Time he’d much rather spend exploring or picking up a few attravtive locals. Regardless, tonight Corvus was just going to relax and try to enjoy himself. He doubted anything could pull his attention from the mug in front of him.
That is, until the dwarf decided to speak.
The young alchemist sighed and turned towards the smaller man to look him over. Not horrible looking, and he seemed to be friendly. Corvus chuckled. He might as well entertain the dwarf’s company for a while. He had nothing better to do.
“I’m not from anywhere,” he said, his eyes revealing a slight smirk behind his mask. “Just passing through I suppose!”
He turned so his full body was facing the dwarf.
“And you? Where do you hail from, sir dwarf?”
Fili gave the man a slow, almost lazy, smile. It was good to meet someone who would not know him. He could relax a bit, act like he used to before the war, before he was King.
“I’m from th’ west, ‘round the Blue Mountains,” he said.“My home’s here now, though.”
He took another long drink from his ale, placing it back down on the table before continuing to speak.
“Ya strike me as a traveler,”he says. “How’s this place compare ta others you’ve been?”
It wasn’t the man’s appearance that made him think so, but the way he spoke. He recognized it; almost reminded him of himself back when he was a traveler. Erebor had a number of such types coming through nowadays. It was beginning to bloom as a city, and it made Fili proud to think so, but it also made him jealous to see so many different people making their way through the world while he was stuck within stone halls.

Internal Injury Starters
“I really don’t think your skin is meant to turn that shade of blue…”
“You’re running a fever, we need to get you help.”
“That’s not a bump… that’s a broken bone.”
“Something bit me and… this isn’t good.”
“What did you eat? When? We need to know to make this better!”
“Just because you aren’t bleeding, doesn’t mean you aren’t hurt!”
“I hate to admit it, but I don’t think I can walk.”
“I can’t feel part of my arm… it’s numb.”
“There isn’t blood, I’m fine.”
“Breathing hurts… it really hurts…”
“Well that’s definitely dislocated.”
“Can you just pop it back in? Yes I’ll be in pain but that just means it worked.”
“Lay down. I’m serious, you can’t stand and it’s not from drinking.”
“Make the room stop spinning and my head stop being in pain.”
“I don’t think I should have eaten that…”
“That is definitely swollen.”
“No, I will get you some ice for that. You say sat down.”
“That’s a limp, and the line I draw. I’m carrying you.”
“You don’t have to… I can… fine, I’m not gonna win this argument.”
“My leg won’t move properly, I only feel prickling numbness.”
“This tightness in my chest won’t go away.”
“Something feels out of place. I can’t tell where.”
“Just because it’s okay on the outside, does not mean it’s okay on the inside!”
“That is not a normal skin colour. What happened?”
“I swear this is why I started carrying oddly specific medicines on me…”

a family doesn’t have to be a man and a woman. a family can be a wizard, his apprentice, the fire demon who ate his heart, his cleaning lady who’s under a curse and in love with him, a senile witch who used to be his greatest enemy, a dog which belongs to his ex teacher and also enemy, a random cursed prince along for the ride, and their walking magic house

@hedonistic-fowl liked for a starter!
Fili walked into the tavern, hood drawn up so that his face was barely visible. The tavern was toward the outskirts of his Kingdom and usually he wasn’t very noticed if he played his cards right, but he liked to take the extra precaution of hiding his face. He made his way to the counter, weaving his way through a few customers.
“An ale. An’ make it large,” he said as the barkeep glanced his way, slapping a few coins down on the counter.
It didn’t take him long to get his drink. He took it with a grateful nod, glancing around the tavern for a possible place to sit. His eyes stopped at a mostly empty table, other than a few patrons. He made his way there and sat down, taking a gulp of his ale before glancing at one of the men.

“Are ya from around here?” he asked.

Corvus lifted his mask and took a long swig of ale from the splintering wooden mug on his table. He wished he could’ve had something stronger, but this tavern wasn’t exactly known for its fine variety of liquor. A shame. Corvus loved alchohol. In fact, he’d studied it when he was younger. The process of creating it actually reminded him a lot of his own alchemy. Everything had to be just right, or the flavor would come out wrong. The bite would be too strong, or it would be far too sweet for anyone to stomach. That said, it was obvious that the ale currently weighing in in his stomach like a rock had been slapped together by someone trying to make a quick bit of cash. Corvus would definitely be glad to leave this miserable town. He was just passing through, after all. He never stayed anywhere for too long. It made him restless. Still, it didn’t feel like he’d be missing much. In his three days there, he’d seen absolutely nothing of interest. Even the taverns were terrible. He set his cup back on the table and placed a few gold pieces there to cover his tab. Calliban fluffed his feathers, obviously ready to get out of this place as well. Just then, the door opened. At this hour, Corvus expected it to be some old fisherman come to grab a drink after a long voyage. After all, that seemed to describe most of the tavern’s patrons. The alchemist turned to see who it was all the same.

* sarah j. mass's book prompts.
A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES
❛ We need hope, or else we cannot endure. ❜
❛ Don’t feel bad for one moment about doing what brings you joy. ❜
❛ Pity those who don’t feel anything at all. ❜
❛ You look … better than before. ❜
❛ Was that a compliment? ❜
❛ We need hope, or else we cannot endure. ❜
❛ Well, good-bye for now. ❜
❛ Do you ever stop being so serious and dull? ❜
❛ Do you ever stop being such a prick? ❜
❛ I would have been gentle with you, though.. ❜
❛ When you healed my arm…You didn’t need to bargain with me. ❜
❛ You could have demanded every single week of the year. ❜
❛ It wasn’t entirely a question, but I needed the answer. ❜
❛ You can leave if you’re just going to insult me. ❜
❛ I could imagine very easily how much I would hate him. ❜
❛ That damned bitch is running me ragged. ❜
❛ I didn’t want you to fight alone. Or die alone.. ❜
❛ I didn’t want to be remembered for standing on the sidelines. ❜
❛ So I may roam wherever I wish until the dawn. ❜
❛ I’d long since stopped feeling sorry for myself about it. ❜
❛ I doubt you’ll be saying that when I take you to the Night Court. ❜
❛ You didn’t tell me this would happen. ❜
❛ You didn’t ask. So how am I to blame? ❜
❛ I’d want someone to hold my hand until the end. ❜
A COURT OF MIST AND FURY
❛ To the people who look at the stars and wish. ❜
❛ To the stars who listen— and the dreams that are answered. ❜
❛ I fell in love with you, smartass, because you were one of us. ❜
❛ I was not a pet, not a doll, not an animal. ❜
❛ I was a survivor, and I was strong. ❜
❛ I would not, could not be broken. Tamed. ❜
❛ There are good days and hard days for me—even now. ❜
❛ Don’t let the hard days win. ❜
❛ My mate. Death incarnate. Night triumphant. ❜
❛ No one was my master— but I might be master of everything. ❜
❛ There are different kinds of darkness. ❜
❛ It becomes what the bearer wishes it to be, needs it to be. ❜
❛ There is the darkness that frightens, the darkness that soothes. ❜
❛ I am broken and healing, but every piece of my heart belong to you. ❜
❛ I wondered if love was too weak a word for what he felt, what he’d done for me. ❜
❛ My mate who had waited for me against all hope, despite all odds. ❜
❛ I realized—I realized how badly I’d been treated before. ❜
❛ I rarely went outside at night—usually, I was so tired from hunting. ❜
❛ I didn’t particularly care for them, anyway. ❜
❛ I wonder if I was looking for this place—looking for you all. ❜
❛ I knew you could take care of yourself. ❜
❛ I would have torn apart the world to get you back.. ❜
❛ I’m thinking that I want you so badly I can’t concentrate. ❜
❛ Many atrocities, have been done in the name of the greater good. ❜
A COURT OF WINGS AND RUIN
❛ Only you can decide what breaks you, Cursebreaker. Only you. ❜
❛ It’s a rare person to face who they are and not run from it - not be broken by it. ❜
❛ Remember that you are a wolf. And you cannot be caged. ❜
❛ I believe everything happens for a reason. ❜
❛ My own power would have consumed me long ago. ❜
❛ I believe that everything happened, exactly the way it had to… ❜
❛ Night Triumphant- and the Stars Eternal. ❜
❛ What we think to be our greatest weakness can sometimes be our biggest strength. ❜
❛ I will find you in the next world - the next life. And we will have that time. ❜
❛ You belong to all of us, and we belong to you. ❜
❛ When you erupt, girl, make sure it is felt across worlds. ❜
❛ We’re all a broken, in our own ways - In places no one might see. ❜
❛ A thousand years. ❜
❛ One life may change the world. ❜
❛ Kindness can thrive even amongst cruelty. ❜
❛ My goal was bigger than revenge. ❜
❛ My purpose greater than personal retribution. ❜
❛ Words had become as foreign and hard to reach as the stars.. ❜
❛ We don’t have the luxury of good ideas—only picking between the bad ones. ❜
❛ I didn’t know how long my sisters and I lay there together. ❜
❛ Because I can’t stay away. ❜
❛ Leave this world… a better place than how you found it. ❜
❛ I hadn’t realized I was a villain in your narrative. ❜
❛ I would clean my blades, and wash the blood from my skin. ❜
