I Have Never Worn High Heels

As a paper collage artist who uses found imagery, it can be hard to decide when a piece is finished. Is something too simple, or just right? You can always add more. But sometimes a few pieces of paper is all you need to achieve your goal.

This collage started with a giant shoe and a woman. In the original photo she was standing ankle deep in water, so I had to figure out what to do with her footless legs. I made two cuts and slid her legs in to the heel. It looks like she’s riding on a magic carpet.

Then I decided a larger than life bird would work well with the composition. The woman’s arms on her hips kind of resemble wings. Paolo, a varied lorikeet photographed by @leilajeffreys was the perfect creature. The fact that they’re both facing the same direction sealed the deal.

Now came the tricky part. Should I add more? The piece felt strong as is. At 9” W by 13” H, it was larger than lots of backgrounds I have. I searched through many different options, but could not find anything to complete the magic.

Ultimately I decided no background was the best choice. When I scanned the collage, the negative space became white in the finished image.
