Been a hot minute since I did one of these so. Hero Appreciation time. We often talk a lot about what our characters are good at, and they often seem larger than life with a wide range of skills in canon. So let's talk about what they're BAD at! Is there anything they just plain suck at? Is it something that impacts their life significantly, or do they get by regardless? How do they respond to being bad at something- do they just accept being bad at it, or do they keep trying to get it right? Do they get frustrated or embrrassed, or are they able to laugh it off? How would they feel about these weaknesses being noticed or commented on by others?

iDigBio's amazing new chatbot starts lying literally immediately

it took one (1) question for the amazing new agentic LLM iChatBio to start fabricating information out of nothing. I asked for a list of clam shrimp in Florida, and it skipped a whole genus. when I told it that it was missing one, it confidently replied that Cyzicus also lives in Florida (it doesn't).

Here also is the GBIF listing for a specimen of Paralimnetis, the genus it skipped. There are no exact coordinates, which is probably why the robot skipped it, but I would hope a person could properly interpret "Florida" to mean Florida:

Iron Man 1 really said "the actual bad guy is the white capitalist who is selling arms under the table to both sides in order to extend the war and make as much money from it as possible," and Iron Man 2 really said "the white capitalist who gives a platform to people with bad intentions in order to make a buck is the reason the bad intentions have the opportunity to prosper and cause untold damage," and Iron Man 3 really said "the real terrorist is the white capitalist who will create and use fear to manipulate governments and the public in order to sell a product," and I really don't think enough people recognise this.

im honestly surprised (not really surprised considering what website this is) that i haven't seen anyone on here talk about Lil Nas X getting violently arrested after suffering some kind of mental health episode. I wish he was getting more attention and support.

it's not that important, but i really do prefer kaidan being the one who triggers the beacon. i think that immediate sense of curiosity is more in character of kaidan compared to ashley, who consistently shows trepidation/suspicion toward unknown, alien things. but also, like, give ashley a break, man. her entire team just died. her entire career thus far has been plagued by unfair discrimination because of her family name. adding "indirectly destroys a prothean beacon and almost kills commander shepard" onto that just feels mean. plus the narrative aftermath doesn't properly account for how her part in that would interact with the alliance's preexisting issues toward her for being a williams anyway. on the other hand, "indirectly destroys a prothean beacon and almost kills commander shepard" is like the worst thing in kaidan's file since baat, 100%, and also i just think it's funnier if the staff lieutenant almost kills the XO

you guys need to let go of any rigid belief in what being nonbinary is because it can be anything. like someone can look completely average in gender presentation and do literally nothing to set themselves apart from their assigned gender and still be nonbinary.

OC Profile: The Twins (Miriam & Macbeth)

Age: 18 (Bk1 start), 24 [+10 years frozen] (Bk3 start)

Growing up in the quiet village of Duninver, the Twins always wanted to find a path that was theirs; a path that wasn't following the same steps their family have walked for generations.

At 13, Macbeth was the first to leave. His interests in magic and hurry to leave drew him to FEARS academy, one of Greenguard's less reputable acadamies of magic. (spoilers: it was a bad idea)

At age 16, Miriam tired of waiting for fate to come knocking at her door and ran off to become an adventuring hero. Uninterested in travelling by herself, she stole Macbeth from his academic life of horrors and dragged him into the life of an adventurer.

At age 18, they met lady Celestia and were set on the path to becoming the fabled Heroes of Falconreach (and becoming incredibly traumatised, but who cares about that when you're heroes).

Macbeth "Mac"

He/Him, grey-bisexual

Class: Base Mage -> Soul Weaver, DK, BDL

GEARS House: Runehawk

The family impulse control and the more insular of the twins. Enjoys sleeping whenever he gets a chance or reading the latest book his borrowed from the Librarium. Dislikes fighting and prefers to get a fight over with as soon as he can.

He started off his journey not as enthused about being a hero as his sister was. He wouldn't deny enjoying being a hero and saving people, but he also wasn't interested in defining himself as a Hero. For most if not all of Bks 1&2, he prefered to see himself as brother of Miriam, caretaker of a baby dragon that might end the world one day, and someone who sometimes helps saves the day. In early book 3, he is more fixated on being a hero, if not being The Hero. 10 years frozen and waking up to the mess that was the Rose, drove him to obsessing more over saving the day, making sure that he doesn't fail the people he cares for again. He sped ran as much of Jaania's ten year breakdown as he could until Draco's dooming forced him to step back and look at what he had been neglecting in the process.

Of the two, he is the more sympathetic to Jaania, even as he firmly oposes what she allowed The Rose to become. He is also uncomfortably attracted to Sepulchure, and even more attracted to Amadeus. He does not talk about it, and he doesn't appreciate people wanting to talk to him about it (i.e. Alteon).

Also had feelings for Tomix, that while reciprocated, didn't go anywhere owing to a tragic case of dying.

Miriam "Mir"

She/Her, Lesbian

Class: Base Rogue -> Pirate, ShadowHunter, WDL

GEARS House: Wolfblade

The family thrill seeker and extraverted trouble maker. Loves exploring, getting into fights, and just generally having a good time when not being hero.

She was the one that most wanted to be a hero, she grew up on tales of the heroes of the past and wanted to be just like them. One part for the fame, one part for the thrill of adventure, one part because she wanted to help people, to rescue them from danger. Being a Hero of Falconreach, raising an adorable dragon, being along for the ride of the Box Eggs prophecy, all of it was a dream come true.

Then she got frozen in ice for 10 years, and all of a sudden being a hero was a lot less exciting. The Rose, Tomix, Serenity, for a time it was just one failure after another and while she never considered giving up, it did start feeling like she was just going through the motions, like no matter how hard she fought, things weren't going to get better. Caitiff's defeat and getting closure with Serenity's ghost helped her find her path again.

Of the two, she is less sympathetic to Jaania. Miriam idolises heroes, and to see Jaania being paraded about as this great hero in spite of what the Rose has done is deeply angering to her.
