Finished replaying the Tomix saga, and now I'm sad again. Such a good storyline. And I just adore all the Weaver lore sprinkled throughout both it and the B1 Ravenloss saga. Soulweavers have some of the best lore in the game, frankly only the Ateala classes come even close to that.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be thinking up Scenarios where the Hero can meet Tomix again. Possibly through Elpis shenanigans and the Mana Core...

I said something in the DFcord that in terms of strength, Yashta is mechanically similar yet superior to Tomix, but after taking a closer look, I'm starting to think he's actively trying to fill the Tomix-shaped hole in our hearts.
Tumblr media
This is how Tomix stands in combat.
Tumblr media
This is how Yashta stands in combat now. This happened during the Sandsea Rift, which took place after Void Ship Saga. He didn't do this during the Void War.
And then there's Securing The Sandsea, also taking place after Void Ship Saga. He wants us to run around the desert with him, going places to put down pylons. There's two very important details here: One, this feels very similar to how we helped Tomix run around Ravenloss to find the Gate Keys.
Two, Yashta runs like this.
Tumblr media
Is this not the Soulweaver Run?
In a nutshell, post-Void Ship, Yashta has a similar stance, uses magic hands and even runs similar to Tomix. Reading between the lines, I think Yashta does this to honor the person he was sworn to protect. I think he's trying to be Tomix for us, and I find that a fascinating development.

Dragonfable was a big influence, but would you recommend playing it now?
Yes, absolutely, positively, 100%.
The game is constantly getting updates. Like. Once a week. It's got a really neat world and story and just about everything if I'm being perfectly honest. ESPECIALLY for what you would expect from what started as a 2006 free-to-play flash game. Like. Leagues better. Hell, it's better then a lot of games out there.
And unlike other Artix entertainment titles, it focuses a lot on actually staying a good game, and not just chunking out new content meaninglessly. (Looks at AQW. I love you Elegy of Madness but you are trapped in such a shit game)
Fuck, I gotta rant about it a bit.
Okay, for starters, the devs clearly CARE about the game being nice to play. I mentioned it has weekly updates, but not all of those are new quests or stuff, but quality of life or balance changes to keep the game interesting and fun. Like, they are even going back and revamping the original questlines just to add a bit more polish, like adding music to stuff from before music was even in the engine, or cleaning up dialogue. They make nice interfaces to help you find your way around the story, they give exploration, they ease the player into the complexities of the battle system, ect.
And it's also very friendly in other ways. LGTBQ+ friendly, and they mean it. Pride stuff up always, gender changes easily accessible and including NB options (not body types YET but considering they would have to make a new variation for every single armor type in the game to do so I don't blame them). Very accepting, nice community from what I've seen, both in and out of studio.
And the story. GODS I love the story. And the world. You start out as a fairly classic hero, saving the world from the evil bad guy, with prophecy on your side (Kind of?), things are a lovely mix of serious and silly that hits just right.... And then, after you've won? It keeps going. Because the world wasn't magically fixed. Because the battle has consequences, on both you and the world. What was once a playground becomes obviously more serious BECAUSE you won. The world is fleshed out, always HAS been, but your character never payed attention to it before things fall apart and running along with prophecy and skill no longer cuts it.
And god that's not even going into the absolute JOY of how it handles it's tie in's with other games. You don't NEED to play the other games but... Short answer is that the game is technically a form of post apocalypse from the Sci-fi spacefaring game, because you RESET REALITY and you start Dragonfable technically thousands of years after that one, in a whole other reality, and THE INSTANT AFTER IT ENDED. All at once. And it's not entirely gone. It's kinda still there. And you... you were the hero of that one too, and you don't remember. (Or do you? some things feel... familiar...)
Also it's art SLAPS. Both it's visuals (a 2-d sidescrolling game on a small crew is normally hard to pull off but Dragonfable is fucking beautiful) and it's music. I use dragonfable music for Symphony in Crimson for a REASON. There's SO MUCH OF It, and it's a lovely music of royalty free stuff from good artists, and in house music made across the entire Artix entertainment studio. And 90% of the time, Dragonfable uses it the best, across the various games.
Now, it IS technically a free to play game. and that comes with some connotations. But uh. I've really never seen a game handle it better then them? Free version covers the entire story and 83% of the gameplay, the 'full' version is a one time $20 purchase, and it's paid currency is mostly for cosmetics. Honestly? I wouldn't be surprised if the game is barely kept afloat with how generous it is. You can beat endgame bosses without paying a penny.
Overall, Dragonfable is one of those games that... feels like it would have died out years ago. Or wouldn't be able to exist in the modern market. But it's not, it's still here, and better, and gives me just... that little bit of hope? for stories and games and everything.
And again. It's story and world is wonderful. I cannot recommend it enough.

[ID: A six fanarts challenge. First is Odgne from dragonfable. It is a drawing of a dark purple dragon with light purple horns and spines down its back with bright purple eyes. It grips the side of the panel and has purple smoke trailing from its mouth. Next is Toothless a dark blue-black Night Fury from How to Train Your Dragon. He has speckles and scars on his scales. His pale green eyes are narrowed in suspicion and his nose glows a bright blue. Third on the top row is Eustace Scrubb as a dragon from Chronicles of Narnia. He is a pale orange dragon with horns and scraggly spines along his back. He has prominent eye ridges over his pale blue eyes and wears a soft smile. First on the second row is a Malzeno from Monster Hunter. It has a bright pink belly and pale tan scales along its back. Its mouth opens in a growl with a pink frill spread along its sides. Its skull-like head has very bright pink eyes that glow with power. Next is Mr Conductor from Dinosaur Train. He is a bright orange Troodon with feathers. He wears a red vest and red conductors hat. His mouth is open in a wide grin as he waves to the audience. Last on the bottom row is Wheatley from Portal. He is a round robot with a bright blue like in the center that forms an eye. It is half closed, narrowed if you will, in annoyance with handles forming eyebrows of sorts. He is suspended by a large boom with wires. /End]
Oh baby. Finished this bad boy finally. It was great to draw characters that are mostly outside my fandoms. The only one I knew super well was Toothless, and kind of Eustace. I've definitely seen Wheatley and the Conductor before, but hadn't really looked at them too much.
Odgne is a cool black-purple dragon from Dragonfable. She looks pretty rad in the minimal art I could find of her.
Toothless was a delight to finally draw. I really have been wanting to draw some animated HTTYD fanart. He is wonderful. I love movie 1 Toothless so much it hurts. I love his personality in all the movies, but the design from movie 1 is just so good.
Eustace! I forgot about him!! He is played by that eyebrow guy!! And I think he has a pretty cool design. Kind of generic but his scrungly chin dangles and spines make him look so disheveled. I love it. Also go back and watch movie 1 for Narnia. The effects on the lion are so good.
And now Monster Hunter. I need to draw more Monster Hunter creatures. Like I need to. Malzeno is such a cool species and just barely scratches the surface. It is so cool! Love the pink color scheme and the skull motif.
Mr Conductor seem rad. I watched a few clips of dinosaur train to prepare for this to get his personality. And he is a Troodon! So I made him a bit more 'realistic.' But you know what. I was very very tempted to draw him as the really spooky Jurassic Park version that was blind and had big eyes and would rip you apart. But I couldn't do that because he seems like such a sweet character!!
And last but not least Wheatley. I never played portal but I know the basics of it. He seems cool, and sassy. And my first robot!

big fan of stories that, while undoubtedly being about the power of friendship, acknowledge that the power of incredible violence is just as important
I dedicated far more time and energy towards this than it deserved but also
sometimes you just have a terrible, terrible idea and have to make it real

Thinking about the benevolent applications of the "dark" and forbidden magic arts in dragonfable again. I want to see ethical fleshweavers using their powers to do surgical interventions, knitting flesh back together and rebuilding what was lost with the care and precision soulweavers are renowned for. I want to see donation-based necromancers: people donating themselves to be used as guards for their hometowns or carers for their relatives, even running organ and tissue donation initiatives. I want to see white-hat death knights in hospital tents, turning the death around them into life for the next person who comes along, making something good out of all the misery. I want to see empathic magic being used, carefully and sensitively, to guide psychotherapy delivery.
I want to see the kind-hearted people practicing these skills, despite all the stigma and distrust, forging ahead. Because just like the element of darkness isn't inherently evil, their craft has no innate morality. It's what you do with them that defines goodness or evil. And they're choosing to do good.
