I'm currently rereading the tmr series & annotating/analysing as I read, and I just came across the most amazing use of symbolism which I thought was so interesting I had to share!!

So, in the first book, Thomas goes to the Deadheads on his second day (p. 67) when he's following a beetle blade.

Here's an excerpt from the scene that struck me as interesting:

The first grave Thomas notices carries the name "Stephen". I think this name isn't just random—it's a direct reference to Thomas's past. I'll explain what I mean.

As we know from the fever code, Thomas's real name was Stephen before wicked tortured him so he'd take Thomas as his new name. Therefore, I like to think of "Stephen" as the old Thomas—as a representation of the past (before wicked)

So, the fact that Thomas sees a cross with his literal "dead name" on it seems to be a symbolism for the death of his past.

The grave represents the fact that wicked took his identity from him and basically "killed" the real Thomas (or should I say "Stephen") by doing so.

The fact that it "looks fresh" could also be a reference to Thomas's recent arrival in the Glade, since that's when he really starts to take part in wicked's trials.

Another thing that I noticed is that Thomas also feels sorrow when he sees the grave. Detached sorrow, which aligns with the taking of his name: he didn't want to be called Thomas, but eventually the torturing got so bad he grew detached from his real self—from Stephen—and accepted his new name in surrender (sorrow).

I believe this is a beautiful use of symbolism and I'm curious if you guys agree!! Tagging some tmr mutuals bc I need someone to tell me I'm not reaching here

Adam Milligan had never expected his life would turn out so... supernaturally involved. He didn't expect he would find out he has brothers, or that his dad was a 'hunter', or that he was part of some freaky angel-vessel-bloodline thing. Or that whole dying a couple times thing—would not recommend. However, he did manage to get married to a pretty cool dude. Who looked like him, and who had his head in his lap right now despite being a 'big bad archangel'. And even if it was technically his voice, Adam could fall asleep now listening to him read.

He'd woken up from possession with strange men who weren't really much of strangers at all. He knew them; but only through Castiel's eyes. And sure, Sam had been kind enough. But Dean? With all his rough angles and sharp slips of tongue, jealousy lingering? Jimmy fled.

I absolutely love the realism in Newt’s character. Like, yes, I do believe that it is sad how he was suicidal. But at the same time, that’s such a realistic aspect that nobody likes to touch on in series like those.

Every time I watch action or horror movies, all I can think is, “Literally any sane person would just kill themselves.” And for Newt’s character to have seen it at a face value that authors looking to make it into a screenplay/screen writers hate just makes me so happy. Because, yeah, why would you want to stay trapped in a box of doom? You wouldn’t.

I love realistic characters.

I especially love it because Dashner was so clearly writing it just in hopes it could be made into a film. You can see it so clearly. And he milks everything, too. So for Dashner to write something that directors hate, purely because it’s realistic and allures readers, is immaculate.

Fuck James Dashner though!

Still thinking about Newt and Thomas

in another universe, newt would have been the cure and thomas would not have been immune.

in that other universe, newt’s blood would have developed the antibodies through fire and despair when he tried to jump. when he watched his friends die from a plague and heard their screams behind the maze’s closed doors for three years. when he watched the man who saved him, alby, die by a griever so shortly after being saved from a griever sting. when he was forced into first-in-command as the glade collapsed around all those lost little boys.

in that other universe, he would still not have been the main character. he would still have been the supporting cast, gentle hands that were rough in the nails guiding thomas— thomas, who simply ‘had what newt did not’. thomas, who had been special from the start, and not for his blood: because he had been rebellious. intelligent. curious and hateful and kind all the same. thomas, who had betrayed wckd and did it out of empathy and desperation to end the cycle he helped create.

in that other universe, newt would still have followed thomas because thomas was breaking the rules. breaking the boundaries. because thomas had questioned things in the maze, because thomas had gotten them out, because thomas had saved them from janson, because thomas had gotten them in and out of the scorch.

in that other universe, newt would still die.

newt would die not from the virus, not from a bullet in his skull and not from a knife in his chest. newt would die simply because he, as the cure, could not exist in thomas’s timeline. for if a cure outside of thomas exists, then the losses the world has suffered while children in the maze died will be for nothing.

if newt had been the cure, they would not have given him a choice like teresa gave to thomas. if newt had been the cure, he would have died in the maze by the dictation of the story and left them all with an impossible dream of freedom from the flare in the future.

if newt had been the cure, hopelessness would have been the finale.
