World Tourism Day celebrations forget the Taj Mahal

There is a regretful note to the utter mess. “Tourism Day would have combined so well with Taj on a full-moon night,” sighs one of those involved. The clearances did not come through.

Nor did the coordination. Centrally, a group of ministers chaired by HRD minister Arjun Singh for just this reason has met precisely once, just 10 days ago. The inaugural programmes, to be held at the Mehtab Garden rather than the earlier scheduled Agra Fort, would have governor T V Rajeshwar and chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav as the guests of honour. The festival would be inaugurated by the CM. Pakistani high commissioner Aziz Ahmad Khan is expected to be there.

‘‘Aggressive tourism campaigns,including the Incredible India campaign, are new developments and need time to show results,’’ says Union tourism minister Renuka Choudhury, ‘‘If more Indian tourists are going abroad than the other way round, it’s because domestic airfare is costly. For instance, it’s cheaper to go to abroad than to Thriruvanthapuram. Now, with a change in the aviation policy, cheaper airfare will boost tourism.In fact,compared to 2003, we’ve had more tourists coming to India this year.’’
