In Korean we donโ€™t say โ€œwristโ€ or โ€œankleโ€ we say โ€œ์†๋ชฉ (sonmog)โ€ and โ€œ๋ฐœ๋ชฉ (balmog)โ€ which literally translate to โ€œhand neckโ€ and โ€œfoot neckโ€ and I think thatโ€™s the greatest, most relatable thing ever.

Noun modifier endings
Today Iโ€™ll give you an overview of noun modifier endings. Iโ€™m not sure if this is actually the proper term for it, but itโ€™s what my teacher used back in the day!
Noun modifier endings are ย actually applied to action verbs and descriptive verbs to change them into forms that can then be used to modify following nouns. More simply, they turn action or descriptive verbs into what we would in English call relative clauses and adjectives respectively.ย
A relative clause is a clause starting with a relative pronoun, such as โ€œthat, who, which, etc,โ€ that describes a noun. You can think of it as a long adjective. Letโ€™s check out some examples in English first:
This is the cake that I ate.
In this example,ย โ€œthat I ateโ€ is a relative clause that describes the cake.
The school where I met my friend is over there.
In this example,ย โ€œwhere I met my friendโ€ is a relative clause giving more information about the school.
And of course adjectives are simpler:
That pretty girl is my friend.
My brother is a friendly guy.
Now, letโ€™s build some relative clauses and adjectives in Korean!
Action verbs
Present tense: -๋Š” โ€” The present tense noun modifier ending for action verbs is -๋Š”. Just slap it onto the root of your verb (keeping in mind any changes with irregular verbs) and youโ€™re good to go!
The cake that that person sells is delicious. -> ๊ทธ ์‚ฌ๋žŒ์ด ํŒŒ๋Š” ์ผ€์ดํฌ๋Š” ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”.
ํŒ”๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ํŒ” โ€”โ€“> ํŒ” + ๋Š” = ํŒŒ๋Š” (ใ„น irregular verb- drop ใ„น before ใ„ด)
The books that she reads are fun. -> ๊ทธ๋…€๊ฐ€ ์ฝ๋Š” ์ฑ…๋“ค์€ ์žฌ๋ฏธ์žˆ์–ด์š”.
์ฝ๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ์ฝ โ€”โ€“> ์ฝ + ๋Š” = ์ฝ๋Š”
Past tense: -(์œผ)ใ„ด โ€” For verb roots that end with a consonant, add -์€. For roots that end with a vowel, just add -ใ„ด. Make sure to keep changes for irregular verbs in mind!
The kimbap that I ate was bland. -> ์ œ๊ฐ€ ๋จน์€ ๊น€๋ฐฅ์€ ์‹ฑ๊ฑฐ์› ์–ด์š”.ย
๋จน๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๋จน โ€”โ€“> ๋จน + ์€ = ๋จน์€
The movie that we saw was boring. -> ์šฐ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ€ ๋ณธ ์˜ํ™”๋Š” ์ง€๋ฃจํ–ˆ์–ด์š”.
๋ณด๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๋ณด โ€”โ€“> ๋ณด + ใ„ด = ๋ณธ
Past habitual: -๋˜ย โ€” If you want to refer to an action that was done repeatedly or habitually in the past, attach -๋˜ to the verb root.
The school that we attended is gone now. -> ์šฐ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ€ ๋‹ค๋‹ˆ๋˜ ํ•™๊ต๋Š” ์ด์ œ ์—†์–ด์š”.
๋‹ค๋‹ˆ๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๋‹ค๋‹ˆ โ€”โ€“> ๋‹ค๋‹ˆ + ๋˜ = ๋‹ค๋‹ˆ๋˜
My mom sings the songs that grandma used to sing. -> ์šฐ๋ฆฌ ์—„๋งˆ๋Š” ์™ธํ• ๋จธ๋‹ˆ๊ป˜์„œ ๋ถ€๋ฅด์‹œ๋˜ ๋…ธ๋ž˜๋ฅผ ๋ถ€๋ฅด์„ธ์š”.
๋ถ€๋ฅด๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๋ถ€๋ฅด โ€”โ€“> ๋ถ€๋ฅด + ๋˜ = ๋ถ€๋ฅด๋˜
Future tense: -(์œผ)ใ„น โ€” ย Again, depending on if the root ends with a consonant (-์„) or vowel (-ใ„น), you use a slightly different form.
The place I will go is far. -> ์ œ๊ฐ€ ๊ฐˆ ๊ณณ์ด ๋ฉ€์–ด์š”.
๊ฐ€๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๊ฐ€ โ€”โ€“> ๊ฐ€ + ใ„น = ๊ฐˆ
The shoes I will wear tomorrow are new ones. -> ๋‚ด์ผ ์‹ ์„ย ์‹ ๋ฐœ์€ ์ƒˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”.
์‹ ๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ์‹  โ€”โ€“> ์‹  + ์„ = ์‹ ์„
Descriptive verbs
Present tense: -(์œผ)ใ„ด โ€” The present tense noun modifier endings for descriptive verbs look like the past tense noun modifier endings for action verbs. Make sure you use -์€ for roots that end with consonants and -ใ„ด when the root ends with a vowel.
That tall building is Lotte World Tower. -> ์ € ๋†’์€ ๊ฑด๋ฌผ์€ ๋กฏ๋ฐ์›”๋“œํƒ€์›Œ์˜ˆ์š”.
๋†’๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๋†’ โ€”โ€“> ๋†’ + ์€ = ๋†’์€
That singer is a handsome man. -> ์ € ๊ฐ€์ˆ˜๋Š” ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธด ๋‚จ์ž์˜ˆ์š”.
์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ โ€”โ€“> ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ + ใ„ด = ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธด
Past tense:ย -๋˜; -์•˜/์—ˆ๋˜ย โ€” Just as we can use -๋˜ with action verbs to indicate a habitual past action, we can use it with descriptive verbs to indicate that a state was continuous in the past. Using just -๋˜ on its own gives a feeling of looking back on or reminiscing about something that may still be continuing to the present time. On the other hand, -์•˜/์—ˆ๋˜ carries a feeling ofย โ€œwas X in the past, but is no longer.โ€
The girl who was pretty when she was young became a beautiful woman. ->์–ด๋ฆด ๋•Œ ์˜ˆ๋ปค๋˜ ์†Œ๋…€๋Š” ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์šด ์—ฌ์ž๊ฐ€ ๋์–ด์š”.
์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ์˜ˆ์˜ โ€”โ€“> ์˜ˆ์˜ + ๋˜ = ์˜ˆ๋ปค๋˜
Mingyu, who was very diligent, still works hard. -> ๋ถ€์ง€๋Ÿฐํ•˜๋˜ ๋ฏผ๊ทœ ์”จ๋Š” ์ง€๊ธˆ๋„ ์ผ์„ ์—ด์‹ฌํžˆ ํ•ด์š”.ย
๋ถ€์ง€๋Ÿฐํ•˜๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ๋ถ€์ง€๋Ÿฐํ•˜ โ€”โ€“> ๋ถ€์ง€๋Ÿฐํ•˜ + ๋˜ = ๋ถ€์ง€๋Ÿฐํ•˜๋˜
Future tense: -(์œผ)ใ„น โ€” The future tense noun modifier endings for descriptive verbs are the same as for action verbs. As always, make sure that you make any needed changes for irregular verbs. Also, please note that [descriptive verb + -(์œผ)ใ„น NOUN] is not a very commonly used structure unless itโ€™s followed by the noun ๊ฒƒ (thing). However, that starts getting into full future tense, which isnโ€™t the point of this post.
I am looking for a gift that will be good to give to my friend. -> ์นœ๊ตฌ์—๊ฒŒ ์ฃผ๊ธฐ์— ์ข‹์„ ์„ ๋ฌผ์„ ์ฐพ๊ณ  ์žˆ์–ด์š”.
์ข‹๋‹ค - ๋‹ค = ์ข‹ โ€”โ€“> ์ข‹ + ์„ = ์ข‹์„
Nouns
Nouns on their own canโ€™t take noun modifier endings, but the endings can be attached to ์ด๋‹ค (to be). My notations of the forms the noun modifier endings take will include ์ด๋‹ค and be written as single units, but just be aware that they are actually ์ด๋‹ค plus the actual noun modifier ending.
Present tense: -์ธ โ€” Itโ€™s the same regardless of whether the noun ends with a consonant or a vowel!
My friend, who is a teacher, is very smart. -> ์„ ์ƒ๋‹˜์ธ ์ œ ์นœ๊ตฌ๊ฐ€ ์ •๋ง ๋˜‘๋˜‘ํ•ด์š”.
That lady, who is an actress, often appears in dramas. -> ๋ฐฐ์šฐ์ธ ๊ทธ๋…€๋Š” ๋“œ๋ผ๋งˆ์— ์ž์ฃผ ๋‚˜์™€์š”.
Past tense: -์ด์—ˆ/์˜€๋˜ โ€” -๋˜ makes another appearance! This time it appears with ์ด๋‹ค conjugated to the past tense. Add -์ด์—ˆ๋˜ if the noun ends with a consonant and -์˜€๋˜ if it ends with a vowel.
Jimin, who was a model student, of course ended up attending a good university. -> ๋ชจ๋ฒ”์ƒ์ด์—ˆ๋˜ ์ง€๋ฏผ์ด๋Š” ์—ญ์‹œ ์ข‹์€ ๋Œ€ํ•™๊ต์— ๊ฐ€๊ฒŒ ๋์–ด์š”.
Seungjin, who was Jiminโ€™s friend, doesnโ€™t contact him anymore. -> ์ง€๋ฏผ ์”จ์˜ ์นœ๊ตฌ์˜€๋˜ ์Šน์ง„ ์”จ๋Š” ๋” ์ด์ƒ ์ง€๋ฏผ ์”จ๋ž‘ ์—ฐ๋ฝ์„ ์•ˆ ํ•ด์š”.
Future tense: Itโ€™s sort of weird to use the future noun modifier ending -(์œผ)ใ„น directly on ์ด๋‹ค. Rather, you would use [NOUN์ด/๊ฐ€ ๋ โ€ฆ]. This way, you are using the action verb ๋˜๋‹ค to say that something or someone will be come something else.ย
The man who will become Sominโ€™s husband is very good-looking. ->ย ์†Œ๋ฏผ ์”จ์˜ ๋‚จ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ์ด ๋ ย ๋‚จ์ž๋Š” ์ •๋ง ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š”.
Chanhyeong, who will become a doctor, has studied hard since he was young. -> ์˜์‚ฌ๊ฐ€ ๋  ์ฐฌํ˜•์ด๋Š” ์–ด๋ฆด ๋•Œ๋ถ€ํ„ฐ ๊ณต๋ถ€๋ฅผ ์—ด์‹ฌํžˆ ํ•ด์™”์–ด์š”.
Happy studying~
