THIS IS NOT TRUE this is not true it’s completely misreported and undermines the actual reasons for the decision for the chair.

it was supposed to be lesbian but the chair thing was ALWAYS the plan, regardless of the gender of the love interest. the reason for the chair is complicated but regardless much different

basically the chair thing was a way to subvert a traditional romance. i think this is where it gets lost in translation/misrepresented a lot? because people think he means subverting a traditional romance by having it be lesbian. which is not what he means at all.

The original interview all of this stems from he said “In order to not make it too much of a romance, I decided to make her primary interest a chair.” He talks at length about being tired with the genre of romance in general. He even goes on to say “I think it would also work had [Suzume] been a boy or had she been non-binary, It's not necessarily the context of male/female; it's about a human overcoming something. In my future films as well, I want to focus on that human story as opposed to too much commentary on gender or sex.”

Shinkai has even said his original plans for the movie focused on sisterhood, so it’s unclear whether it would’ve been a romance to begin with. He says the plot was majorly altered because of pressure due to the success of your name, which to me implies that the romantic themes could’ve been entirely absent.

In this way i think the idea of ‘he made him a chair to protest not being allowed to make it gay’ is actually kind of damaging to the emotional impact of the story. There’s a LOT of symbolism in Souta being confined to an inanimate form- ever wonder why there’s 3 pillars, and three legs to the chair?

Heteronormative pressures definitely played a role into making the romance plot what it is, but reducing its unconventional approach to romance to a response TO this pressure is kinda reductive.

Sorry if this is way too much or if i sound ☝️🤓 i like this movie an unhealthy amount (i saw it like 8 times in theaters) and i’ve had a lot to say about this for a while

Learning that the movie Suzume was supposed to be a lesbian story but the studio didn't approve of that and Shinkai had the boy protag turn into a chair for most of the movie as a fuck you about it was a bizarre thing to learn but greatly makes one of my favorite movies better
