aside from the yuri the main thing im actually excited for is the possible backstory eternal sugar has with maternity of possibly having miscarriages/stillborns or losing her children.
because shes actively isolating hollyberry, who has a big family thats extremely important to her, from said family.
if part of the reason eternal sugar couldnt find happiness was because she tried and FAILED to start a family time and time again (her dress in the img seems to be made of Multiple "asleep" babies)... holy shit thats dark and also a CRAZY parallel to hollyberry. and maybe a way to target her, stemming from jealousy of what she personally couldnt have

Chapter 3
<-Prev Next->
When she awoke from her dreamless sleep, she was greeted by tea and a plate of food on the table next to her in a room that was not hers; she was in the doctor's lab. "Right, I've been working on my reading and writing until I fall asleep in Dr. Sakaki's lab for the last few weeks because of those nightmares,"Sitting up on the couch she was sleeping on.
After Eric's death, her nightmares became more intense and frequent. It was thanks to the doctor allowing her to work until exhaustion took over that she was able to sleep. She looks up and sees that the worksheet and books Dr. Sakaki gave her are neatly stacked on the bookshelf in the corner of the lab.
"Dr. Sasaki must have moved it there."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A splash of red blood pulled under the body, Eric's body.
"I thought you said that now, as a God Eater, you can fight those monsters; yet you still can't protect someone right in front of you."
Her father is standing over Eric's dead body, bloody, and has some of his flash tears from his body reviling guts and bones.
"You failed to protect him, just as you failed to protect me. You let him die, just like you let me die that day."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The memory of her nightmares floods her mind. Clutching her head in pain from the memories rushing back is agonizing. Just then, the lab door opens. "Oh, good, you're awake. How are you feeling, Yukichi?" Dr. Sakaki walks in and goes to his computer.
"Good morning, Doctor. I apologize for disturbing you last night." She said and ate the food from the plate in front of her, "Oh, it's alright, but I should be asking you that. When you came here last night, you looked disturbed. Is something troubling you?" Looking up at the doctor, she rubs the back of her head and gives him a sheepish smile. "It's nothing, doctor, just a nightmare. Well, I better get ready for today's mission. I'll see you after the mission, doctor."
Before Dr. Sakaki could say anything else, Yukichi had already walked out the door.
___________________________________
"Yet another day of God Eating. Make sure you come back safe yeah." Lindow stood in front of them holstering his God Arc over his shoulder. "That... That's it? That's the whole speech." The Old-Type rookie spoke up but was quickly reprimanded by Sakuya, telling him that he wouldn't last long if he kept questioning Lindow in a teasing way.
"This is absurd," Soma mumbled under his breath. "Well, it looks like everyone is feeling the mission-well, almost everyone." Looking at the pale-skinned New-Type rookie, the other, also looking at the pale-skinned New-Type rookie. She sheepishly scratched the back of her head; although she looked fine, Soma noticed a slight dark circle under her eyes.
"Ha ha relax kid I'm just yanking your chain. Chin up yeah." Lindow chuckled. "Alright, all jokes aside, this will be your first mission as a squad. You all are damn good so do your best and follow the big rule: Don't die."
___________________________________
After Lindow leaves, Sakuya takes charge and orders everyone to split up to find their target more quickly. "Remember, Kongous are fast, so keep your guard up, alright?" Yukichi heard over her radio as she walked through the ruins of the city.
Before she could reply to Sakuya, a roar erupted from behind her.
Jumping to the right, she dodged the creature in time before it managed to crush her. Putting her hand on her earpiece, she spoke into the radio, "Sakuya, I found our target." Another roar came from behind her, She turned to see a flying creature that resembled a black egg with red eyes. "And I'm surrounded by Zygotes," she added.
"Can you hold out until we get there?" she heard through her radio while trying to dodge the bigger Aragami and attack the smaller one. "I can try, but I don't know how long I'll la-".
Before she could finish her sentence one of the Zygote flew down to attack her, she didn't have time to turn and attack them, bracing herself for impact. Blood a small amount of it landed on her face, it's wasn't hers, it's was the Zygotes.
Looking down, she saw a giant saw blade. It was Soma's. "You just have a cost problem for me, don't you?" he said, looking at her with his cold blue eyes. "Can you still fight?"
Nodding, both of them turned their attention back to the Kongous and the two other Zygote. "Oi, focus on the Zygote. I'll take on Kongous," he ordered. Nodding, she followed his instructions and dashed forward to the flying creature.
Not long after Sakuya and Kota joined the battle, they managed to take down the Aragami.
_______________________________
When they arrived back at the den, they were greeted by Lindow, who was sitting on one of the couches in the lounge. "Looks like you made it back before us. How'd it go?" Sakuya asked as she and the others sat down on the couch.
"Pretty well. I managed to wrap up the night early, as per your request. How'd you guys do?" Looking at the rest of the group "As per your request. No one died see," Soma spoke up with a condescending tone.
"You should have seen it, man! We kicked so much ass! We were awesome!" Kota exclaims. "Funny, I don't remember you helping much," Kota sputters at Soma's statement.
Looking at Yukichi he asked "What about you, newbie? How was your first day out with the group?" She looked up at him and scratched the back of her neck. "It went well for me," she replied. Satisfied with her answer, he resumed his banter with the others when an announcement came over the intercom.
"Attention all God Eaters: The 7th Unit has successfully slain an Ouroboros and retrieved the core. All engineers are requested to report to Lab No. 5 immediately. I repeat we can confirm that an Ouroboros core has been detached. All engineers, please proceed to Lab 5 for analysis at once."
The den was buzzing with excitement about the news she read about it on the Norn before a massive Aragami that resembled a spider. "Ouroboros? What the hell is that? Wait, is it really that strong?" Kota asked. Soma replied, "If you did a little research, you wouldn't have to ask such stupid questions. It's in the Norn. Look it up."
"If what the announcement says is true then that means Dr.Sakaki will be busy today. So we probably won't have any lessons today."
"Oh, shut up," her thought was interrupted when she heard Soma's voice. "Ooh! Well, all right then. Hahahaha! I have another date lined up, so I'm off to dinner. Good night, guys!" With that, Lindow took his leave.
"I'm going to bed as well. Good night, everyone," she said as she stood and walked toward the elevator.

Chapter 2

<- Prev Next->
Morning comes, and the day starts just as before. Making her way to Den's lobby, she walked out of the elevator and down the stairs to Hibari's desk.
"Good morning, Yukichi. Are you here for your field mission?" The redhead operator turned to her when she noticed her, nodding her toward the operator answering the redhead question. "Lindow will be the one taking you to your field mission. He'll be here soon, so you can wait over there." She pointed at the couch near her desk.
When Lindow arrives, he introduces himself as her superior officer. Right after he briefs her on the mission, a beautiful woman walks towards them, "Oh, who is this a new recruit?" He turned to the woman with a smile before replying, "Yep, and you totally ruined my big scary speech now, so shoo!" he tested.
"Of course, sir. You're the boss." She waved at Yukichi before she left. "Alright, let's get going, yeah."
__________________________________
"Alright, rook, good work today. Not bad for your first-time mission on the field." He turned to the younger God Eater before he spoke again. "Let's go home, yeah."
When they arrived at the Den, Lindow went to talk with her again before she went to Dr. Sakaki's lab for her lesson about Aragamis along with Kota. "Hey, rook, before I forget, your mission tomorrow is with Sakuya. Be sure to follow her orders, okay?" Nodding her head, showing that we acknowledge his request, and leaves for Dr. Sakaki's lab.
The next day's mission with Sakuya is the same as it is with Lindow. "I get why Lindow speaks so highly of you now. You are not afraid to try new tactics; never let that go. Now let's wait for the chopper and head home."
When they return to the Den, Yukichi speaks with Sakuya briefly before she heads to Dr. Sakaki's lab for her Aragami lessons with Kota. "Hay, is there any point to this lecture? I mean, our job is to kill them. What does it matter where they came from?"
"Oh, but there is a point." The doctor spoke up, startling both of the young God Eaters. He explained that the Aragamis is a cluster of cells fused together, that they have no heart or vital organs, and that they cannot be killed by normal weapons.
After the lesson is over, Yukichi stays back a bit longer. "Ah, what can I help you with, Miss Yukichi?" The doctor smiled at her "I uh... Can you teach me how to read and write properly, doctor?" Sheepishly scratching the back of her neck.
"Ah, I see... Tell me what you know about reading and writing." The doctor asked, "My father taught me the basics, but that's all." The young God Eater looked down to the floor, embarrassed by her lack of knowledge about reading and writing.
"I see. Tomorrow, come back to my lab after your mission. I'll have some reading material and paperwork for you." Yukichi looks back up at the doctor, and bowing her head. She thanked him before she left for her room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Dad, look, there's food here." She calls out to her father while rummaging through a box filled with canned goods in the back room of the abandoned store.
"That's good, but we still need medical supplies." Looking up at her father through the doorway "You keep on stocking up on food, and I'll look around for the first aid kit."
After he takes his leave, Yukichi turns back to the box of food and starts to put the canned food into her wagon.
After stocking up on food, she looks for her father at the front of the store.
When she finally found him, she called out, "Dad, did you find the medkit?" Her father didn't answer, his back turned to her. "Dad? What's wrong?"
She called out again. "Why did you leave?" He whispered in a hushed voice, "What?" Feeling her heart suddenly drop, she looked at him, his back still to her.
Slowly, he turned around to her; his face and body were bloody. "Why did you leave Yukichi? Why didn't you try me?" But before she could say or do anything, the roof collapsed on him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"DAD!!!"
Her body jolted awake in a cold sweat and heavy breathing. Looking out at the window in the middle of her room, she saw it was still dark out. Turning to the side of her bed, her clock read 4:00 a.m. Calming her breath, she got out of bed, turned on a dim orange light, and went to the bay window seat of her room, sitting there and looking out the window to the city.
__________________________________
8:00 a.m., the clock read as Yukichi ready herself for today, putting on her Fenrir battle top, casual pants, and boots.
On her way to the elevator, she met with Kota, "Hay Yukichi, you feel pumped for our mission today." Nodding her head, she enters the elevator, and Kota follows suit.
They went to the cafeteria for breakfast before making their way to Hibari's desk. "Hey, Hibari," Kota greets the operator when they arrive at her desk. "So who are we going on a mission with today?" He asked the redhead.
"Today you're going on a mission with Sakuya and Lindow, Kota, and as for Yukichi, you'll be sent to the sunken grid. You'll meet Soma and Eric there, for your mission." The redhead operator said while typing on her computer.
__________________________________
"Don't just stand there; fight!"
When she arrives at the sunken grid, everything happens so quickly. Eric was introducing himself, but then an Ogertail came out of nowhere and killed him. Then a young man in a hood who looked around her age killed the Aragami, both of them lying dead on the ground.
"Well there you go; welcome to this godforsaken workplace." He turned to her a scowled, edge deep on his face.
"Name Soma, don't bother remembering it; neither of us will last long. The time for mourning has come and gone. Come on, we have a mission to finish. If you don't want to die, then you better stay the hell out of my way."
"I can't do that."
He stopped and turned to look back at her. "I'm sorry, but I can't do that. I was instructed to stay together during combat, so I won't be separating from you. Even if you have some sort of death wish." The look on her face tells him everything he needs to know; she won't back down. "Find, but if you die, it's on you."
The mission is over as quickly as it's started, and they manage to survive even after they are boxed in by Aragamis. When they arrived back at the Den, Yukichi headed straight to Dr. Sakaki's lab, while Soma stayed at the lobby to fill in the report, and at the end of the report, he wrote.
I, Soma von Schicksal, approve the transfer of New-Type Yukichi Suzuki from training to active combat duty.

"You'll be taking the Aptitude test; pass this door," the older woman said. Yukichi walked into a massive room as the door closed behind her. A booming voice greets her.
"When you're ready, please stand in the center of the room." She did as told, put her right hand on what looked like one half of a bracelet, and held onto the handle of the weapon.
Within seconds, the device that holds both the weapon and bracelet clamps down on her hand. "AH!" A burning sensation runs through her hand to her body.
After a couple of minutes of the burning pain, it stops, the device opens up, and she picks up her weapon looking up at it. "I won't let people die again, now I can fight back against those monsters." Her thoughts halted when she saw black goo flowing from her weapon and connecting to her bracelet.
__________________________________
The first thing the First Unit heard when they entered the Den was the gossip about one of the recruits being a New-Type god eater.
"Hey, did you hear? They found someone compatible with the New-Type God Arc, and I heard she's apparently from outside the walls." They hear a female voice as they keep on walking through the Den.
"Really? Who knew they would find some like that from beyond the walls?" This time they heard a male voice talking as they sat on the couch on the second floor in the middle of the lounge area.
"I know right," The female voice speaks again. Lindow smiles. "I hear that the New-Type is cute. Did you guys want to go say hi to her?" The ravenette looks at his Unit members for an answer.
Sakuya agreed to say hi and welcome the New-Type to the Den, while Soma decided not to take part in the conversation and ignored Lindow's question completely.
Just then they catch a glimpse of the New-Type everyone has been talking about standing in front of the elevator to go to the laboratory floor for her medical checkup. Though they didn't get a chance to see her face, from what they could see of her, she had rather pale skin, and her hair was pure white.
That catches Soma's attention, having never seen someone like that before; everyone seems to look at her both out of curiosity and excitement and just like that, she disappears into the elevator.
"Well, no wandering; everyone is talking about her; she is rather pretty." Lindow turned back to the two beside him on the couch with a smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Dad, what kind of tree is this? It looks like a Willow tree." The cheerful young girl excitedly pointed at a colorful picture of a tree in the book resting in front of her.
"That? That is called a Wisteria tree; people from all over the world used to come to Japan just to look at it." The older man was lying on his side on the makeshift bed facing her.
Though it's dark, the dim glow from the mechanical lantern is enough to allow him to see his daughter's face. "Why is that?"
"Well, I could only guess it's because of its beauty." The young girl turned to her father, "Have you seen it, Dad?" She tilted her head back, her wide, crimson eyes sparkling with curiosity as she gazed up at him.
"I have, and I wish you could see how beautiful it is with your own eyes." Tucking some loose hair behind her ear, she smiles back at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It's that dream again." she sighs, "At least it's not one of those nightmares again." Looking up to her window, she saw it was already dusk. After the medical checkup, the doctor told her that she'd feel drowsy and tired "I didn't expect it to make me feel this tired."
Her thoughts were cut short when her stomach growled audibly, echoing in the silence of her room. Waking up to the door of her room, she opened it, and she was met with Kota.
"Ah, h-hey I was wondering if you want to come with me to something to eat and walk around for a bit. Since we are both new here." After thinking for a moment, she decided to take the offer: "Might as well, since I have nothing better to do.".
Nodding her head, she started walking to the elevator. "So what's your name? You didn't get the chance to tell me before Miss Amamiya told us to go take the medical checkup." He asked while they waited for the elevator, "It's Yukichi."
____________________________________
After having dinner at the Den cafeteria, they wander around for a bit and familiarize themselves with their surroundings. "So, hey Yukichi, which section of the Outer Ghetto are you from? I never saw you in my section."
"Oh, I'm not from here." She stopped walking and turned to look out of the window beside her. "I'm from the outside of the wall." Turning back to him, her piercing red eyes and a sad smile edge themselves on her face. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't-."
"It's fine." After a moment of silence, Kota speaks up again. "But since you're a God Eater now, that must mean your family is here too, right? Well, at least they're in the Outer Ghetto, right?" An optimistic smile spread across his face, she didn't answer and continued walking. ____________________________________
In the next couple of weeks, they're called on by Miss Amamiya for simulation training, and each time after, they go to the cafeteria for lunch. Today is no different. Kota seems to have never-ending energy in him, even after training.
Before they were able to leave though, they were stopped by Major Amamiya. "Before you go, I have something to tell you: from tomorrow onward, you'll be going on field missions training. You will be trained by the First Unit, and after you've completed these missions successfully, you'll be assigned to a Unit. That's all."
"Yes ma'am. Thank you, ma'am." The both of them said in unison, "Very well, go on and enjoy the rest of your day for today, dismiss." With that, she takes her leave.
"This is incredible! We finally got the chance to go out on field missions, can you believe it? Let's celebrate in style!" They rushed off to the cafeteria, excitement in the air.

"Yukichi, no matter what happens to me, promise me that you'll keep on living, ok?" The man looks down at his daughter, and in response, the young girl looks up and smiles back at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was the last good memory she could remember about her father before his death.
They were looking for food and medical supplies. And he was trapped on the side of the building that was filled with Aragamis when the roof collapsed, separating them, and hearing him screaming at her to run.
It's been three years since his death, and she's still plagued by nightmares of that memory of her father screaming and yelling at her to run and live.
"Listen to me, Yukichi, you need to go. Go east, go to Fenrir; you'll be safe there."
"No! I own go without you, Dad, there must be another way to get you out of there!"
"There's no time, Yukichi. Please, you need to go. Run Now!"
Walking through the rubble of a past building that once stood tall, looking up ahead, she sees the tall wall that protects Fenrir. "I'm finally here; I made it, Dad." Her thoughts were cut short when she heard the rumbling footstep of the Aragamis.
Quickly ran towards one of the rubbles to hide under, pulling her wagon behind her. She squeezes into the small opening and pulls her wagon right after.
Not long after, a small group of Aragamis walked in front of her hiding spot. Holding her breath, she watched as the ground of Aragamis walked past her. After a couple of minutes, Yukichi decided to take a look. Not seeing any Aragamis near her, she got out of her hiding spot and quickly walked towards the wall, careful not to attract any attention to her.
After a while, she sees a giant door and a couple of guards in front of it. "Hold it, you can't come in until tested to be a match to be a God Eater." That was the first thing one of the guards said to her, "And what happens if I'm not a match to be a God Eater?"
"Then we have to turn you away; I'm sorry." Pondering her situation, she decided to take the shot. "It looks like you're a match; we'll take you to the Den for further testing." The guards at the door of the giant wall take her to a truck and drive her to the Den.
____________________________________
"GO! RUN YUKICHI! LIVE!"
That's the last thing she remembers he told her-to run, to survive, to live. "Alright, look like you are compatible to be a New-Type," her voice pulled Yukichi out of her thoughts when she heard the older woman speak.
"Hibari informed the director that we found someone compatible to be a New-Type." The woman with red hair nodded and started typing on her computer in front of her.
"Follow me; I'll be taking you to where you'll be taking the aptitude test." The older woman's voice rang through again. Yukichi stood up and followed her, walking down the hall.
"Promise me that you'll live a long and happy life, ok, Yukichi."
"Don't worry, Dad; I made a promise, and I intend to keep it. I want to live, and I'll make sure your wishes come true too."
stubborn heart ch. 1
yan!capitano x wife!reader
summary | or in which capitano is told he needs a wife. and he begrudgingly agrees.
“Just give me someone who won’t cause any trouble or annoy me.”
Capitano didn’t understand the point of this meeting, nor did he understand why he needed a wife either. It was all meaningless.
“Not interested in the feisty ones, Capitano?”
The captain shifted his focus to Pantalone before looking at Pierro, “I am simply uninterested. But if this must happen, then I would prefer it to be someone who won’t get in my way nor expect anything from me.”
“That will be difficult. Do you realize how hard it’ll be to find a young maiden like that? Most high society women I know always expect extravagant things.”
“Someone from the middle or lower class will be fine.”
Arlecchino finally spoke up, her eyes looking to the captain with an unknown scrutiny within her eyes, “I do know of someone… She’s one of the children of the House of the Hearth.”
“Oh, great idea! Let him marry a child.”
Arlecchino glared at the doctor, “for your information she is not a child, when I say she is one of the hearth’s children, I am merely stating she was raised there. She is a young woman. Independent. Keeps to herself. She isn’t picky nor does she want anything for herself. Incredibly modest to a fault and very quiet. She isn’t strong and works more as a maid in the House of the Hearth than as anything else, but she understands what the fatui does and will not get in your way for any reason.”
She crossed her arms over her chest, “though, I will warn you, if you end up marrying her, I will not tolerate any harm that you may give her. I do not care how strong you are compared to me. Hurt her, and you will die.”
“Well, Capitano,” the jester spoke.
The captain looked to Arlecchino. Marrying a highborn lady would be far too much trouble.
“Alright.”
“Would you like to meet her?”
“That is not necessary.”
Y/n, all the while, rung her hands nervously. Her fingers incessantly playing with the ends up her sleeves. When Father had left for the harbinger meeting, she thought it would be like any other, but when Father had come back, she was immediately informed that she were to marry another harbinger. She doesn’t remember what happened after that because she ended up fainting right then and there as she was sweeping the floor. And what is worse is that Father had actually brought the said harbinger to where y/n was cleaning which means he saw her freeze up and faint. From start to finish.
But she couldn’t help it!
In Snezhnaya, the harbingers are revered. They were powerful. Strong. Scary even. How was a normal person supposed to react when told they were going to marry a harbinger anyway?!
“You’re awake.”
The moment her eyes cracked open Lord Arlecchino (Father) was already sitting next to her bedside waiting for her.
“Father!”
Arlecchino stopped her from sitting up too quickly.
“Lay down. There is no rush.”
Y/n laid back down, her eyes darting to the door and then back to Arlecchino. It was faint, but she could definitely sense someone waiting just outside.
“Uhm… what you said before…,” y/n managed to mumble out.
“Yes…,” Arlecchino said, “the marriage with a harbinger.”
“Why me?”
“Because your life isn’t here.”
“But I like it here-“
“There is more for you elsewhere. Knowing you, you will never ask for anything more unlike my other children.”
Y/n let Arlecchino’s words sink in and ultimately decided not to fuss about it, “I- I understand… who is it? The harbinger I am going to marry, I mean.”
Arlecchino looked to the door which was when Il Capitano walked in. His mere presence alone was enough to cause you to shake within the safety of the bedsheets, Her hands unconsciously pulling the covers closer as if trying to shield herself from a monster under her bed.
“H- hello, Capitano.”
She hated how she stuttered over her own words, but she decided not to dwell on it. I mean, she did faint in front of him for a first impression, so a little stutter wasn’t going to kill her.
“She will do.”
Annnnd y/n fainted again.
The moment your eyes cracked open you immediately noticed that everything was different. Namely your surroundings. Sitting up slowly, you held the blanket close to your chest, your eyes wide as you took everything in.
The bed that you were laying was big, the mattress way squishier and more comfortable than the one you were used to. Don’t get anything wrong here, Arlecchino always made sure that all of the children in the house of the hearth were taken care of, but servants like you who didn’t take up the fatui mantle were usually given less than stellar rooms, beds, and such. Not that you minded, of course, you knew that the ones who were actual fatui needed things more.
Slowly but surely, you got out of the bed. Your bare feet gently touching the cold ground. You flinched slightly at just how cold the tile was before fully standing up and looking around. There was a closet, a dresser, a second dresser with a mirror on it, you had a nightstand on each side of your bed, and to the far right were the windows. The curtains were a type of blackout cloth to keep any light from filtering in so you couldn’t tell the time of day unless you went to open the curtain which was also how you noticed there wasn’t a clock in the room. And finally, to the far left was the door to leave the room.
Making sure the blanket was tightly wrapped around you as you had noticed that you had been changed into your nightgown, you had made your way to the door. Grabbing onto the doorknob, you slowly twisted it and opened the door. Your head then peaking out into the hallway. Empty. Not a soul in sight.
Taking a deep breath, you fully opened the door and stepped out.
“Might as well explore.”
You had already figured that this was Lord Capitano’s home.
Deciding to go right, you took careful steps as you traversed down the hall, your eyes still wide with curiosity as you looked at everything. And, not looking where you were going, you had made a turn, but the moment you did you had immediately ran into someone.
Stumbling back a bit, you quickly gathered yourself up and bowed to the person, “I’m so sorry, please forgive me!”
“…are you going to faint again?”
You tensed up immensely the moment the voice broke you out of your stupor. Shakily, you lifted your head, your lips pursing into a small pout as you looked up at Capitano. Out of all the people you had to run into and it just had to be him.
“No, Lord Capitano…the first time I fainted, I was merely caught off guard at the news of marrying a harbinger!”
“And the second time?”
“Well, you caught me off guard too…”
When you looked at him, you noticed how he seemed to be studying you. Most likely judging you since you had decided to walk out in your nightgown with a blanket wrapped around you.
“Do you wish for a ceremony?”
Completely disregarding what you had said, he moved onto the next topic. Not that you minded, you were grateful that he didn’t want to discuss your fainting any longer.
“No, a ceremony isn’t needed.”
“Then follow me.”
He turned on his heel and for a moment, you wondered if he was coming to see you before you had run into him. Shaking your head, you chased after him, his long strides were a bit hard to keep up with.
“Don’t trip on the blanket,” he suddenly said as you both cam eto a winding staircase.
“Alright,” your voice was barely above a whisper as you followed him down, but, despite your assurance, your foot got caught on the end of the blanket. Your eyes widened for a split second just as your body started to go forward, but the motion was quickly stopped when you felt an arm wrap around your waist.
“Clumsy.”
The single word made your ears, neck, and face burn with embarrassment as Capitano simply picked you up with ease and carried you bridal style down the rest of the stairs, and when you thought he was going to set you down, he merely kept walking with you secure in his arms.
“Sorry,” you managed to mumble.
Sadly, you were known for your clumsiness back at the hearth along with other misfortunate things.
Capitano, didn’t acknowledge your apology, but did hold you a little closer as he cam eup to the dining room. The table was long, but there were only two chairs. Capitano’s chair which you figured was seated on the end with a second chair (probably yours) that was seated to his right. At these chairs were two documents.
“Marriage papers,” he said simply as he walked over to them and set you down in the chair before he took his own seat.
You looked down at them, a part of you still couldn’t believe that you were marrying the 1st harbinger, Il Capitano.
Untucking one of your arms from the comfort of the blanket, you grabbed one of the two pens.
“Before you sign, I want to make a few things clear.”
You continued to look down at the documents, and he was not going to have it.
“Look at me when I talk to you.”
His voice held a sort of demanding tone to it as he reached for you, his gloved fingers hooking around your chin as he turned your head to look at him, the claws on his gloves lightly dug into your skin, causing you to wince slightly.
“No harm will come to you here unless you try to betray me. Though, Arlecchino has made it clear that she will deal with you herself if that were to happen.”
You nodded despite his tight grip on your face.
“You will not get in my way, or cause trouble. Do not expect anything from me as I will not expect anything from you.”
You nodded as he spoke, and just as he finished you decided to ask your own question, “will I be doing any sort of work?”
“There is no need for that, just do as a wife does and do not annoy me. And if you plan to leave our home, I expect to be notified before you do so.”
Do not annoy him? With how you keep fainting and even tripping a few minutes ago, you highly doubted that you hadn’t annoyed him already. (You had missed the part where he had already referred the big mansion as “our”…)
“Understand?”
“I understand.”
He let go of your face, as you brought yourself to look at the papers again. And with a steady breath, you began to sign them while taking notice that Capitano’s signature was already on all the parts that needed to be signed.
Seems like he was already prepared to marry you- no. He probably had these papers ready way before you were chosen to be his wife. It was just a matter of whose name would be next to his on these documents. It didn’t have to be you.
“Done.”
You set the pen down as Capitano took the papers and sifted through them.
Nodding, he stood up, papers in hand, and you watched him carefully. Though, surprisingly he stopped to look down at you. You both seemingly caught in a silent stare off, you weren’t sure what he was looking for. Though, everything seemed to stop when he lifted his free hand to his helmet. There was a small click sound and his helmet seemed to loosen, and slowly but surely he had pulled his helmet off.
Your eyes were immediately drawn to his face.
“Stay still,” he said as he leant down, and you froze. His free hand cupped your cheek almost tenderly as he tilted your head back. Panicking on the inside, you were quick to shut your eyes tight, and not even a second later did you feel his lips press against your own.
Though, the kiss was merely a peck before he was pulling away from you. Honestly, the kiss itself was so quick you couldn’t register just how it felt as he was already putting his helmet back on.
“At weddings, the bride and groom kiss, and as you won’t be having the typical wedding ceremony, that should suffice.”
You raised a hand to your face, your fingers gently brushing your lips as Capitano left you in the dining room. (He was mostly going to file the marriage with the officials in order to make the “wedding” legitimate.)
“He says not to expect anything from him, and yet…he still kissed me…even though he didn’t have to.”
You never kissed anyone before. Never dated either. So to still be granted a kiss even despite the fact that you will never have the wedding you always dreamed about, well, it still made you incredibly happy that even your heart managed to skip a beat.
Some Years Ago.
Your fingers were cold, frost-bitten almost as your breath felt heavy in your lungs. Your feet sunk in the snow, your knees wobbled in the wind, the sheer cold ate away at you slowly, like a beast tearing into flesh.
With your teeth chattering and your arms hugging yourself, you pushed forward. Your eyes focused on the group ahead of you. Due to the recent attacks from the Abyss, you were forced to leave your home with your friends and neighbors. Your family…long forgotten in the graves under the snow.
Every once and awhile someone would turn their head to make sure you and any other stragglers were keeping up and didn’t fall too far behind. But even if you fell in the snow and refused to get back up, it wasn’t like they were going to walk back to get you. Which was fine, you didn’t expect them too.
“Shit!”
“How did they already catch up to us?!”
“We have to run!”
Blinking slowly, tiredly almost, you looked up at the commotion ahead of you and saw everyone trying to run through the thick snow. Pressing your lips together, you looked behind you.
The abyss.
Dark portals materialized out of thin air as monsters started to peek through. Just like what happened in the village. They appeared out of nowhere. And once the first wave stepped out, they too took off in a sprint right towards you and the group ahead of you. Turning back around, you tried to run too, but your feet just seemed to sink deeper into the snow before you got tripped up and fell face first.
You tried to stand back up, but your exhaustion got the better of you. You couldn’t bring yourself to get back up. You closed your eyes. Maybe the cold will take you before the abyss does.
“Whatever you do. Close your eyes and don’t come out.”
Your eyes snapped open at the new voice, but before you could look up a heavy coat was thrown over you. An immediate warmth seemed to engulf you, shielding you from the wind that was cutting right through you a second before. And outside of the coat, you could hear it. You could hear the distinct sounds of blades clashing and the familiar cries of weapons cutting flesh. But you didn’t dare look nor did you come out from the confines of the coat that covered you. And all too soon the sounds of fighting died completely. The only thing you could register were the heavy footsteps crunching into the snow and making its way towards you.
“Can you stand?”
The voice echoed from outside of the coat.
You opened your mouth to say you couldn’t, but when you did, no sound came out.
All too quickly your world was quickly flipped when you felt yourself get picked up, the coat was still heavy around you and covered you completely, so you couldn’t see your savior.
“Is your family among the people ahead?”
You shook your head, hoping your savior could see the movement from beneath the coat.
“Alright…,” he said as he began the trek towards them as you shivered within his hold.
After being saved that day, you would find yourself as a member of the House of the Hearth under Lord Arlecchino’s command. Your savior remaining both nameless and faceless.
“Whatever you do. Close your eyes and don’t come out.”
Present Time.
You doubted that that person would save you again, but you held onto to those words. Just close your eyes and don’t come out. You chanted it to yourself as you sought the safety of the small confines of the carriage.
And with a bated breath you waited.
“Come on, she’s in here!”
“Well, get the door open!”
“I swear, if she ain’t here-“
“Oh shut it and just open the damn door.”
You closed your eyes when the handle to the carriage door shook, the people behind it trying to yank the handle as hard as they could.
“Wait, what was that?”
“What,” one of voices said, obviously frustrated that they stopped trying to open the door.
“That sound!”
“What sound?!”
“Just shut up and listen!”
You hugged your coat tightly and tried your best to block out everything. You didn’t want to hear anything, didn’t want to think, didn’t want to feel.
You didn’t-
You jumped when you heard the handle again, this time it turned slowly which was a stark contrast to how it was being pulled on before, but you refused to acknowledge whoever opened that door, well, not until you felt the carriage shift as someone stepped inside and a presence sit right next to you. Their shoulder brushing lightly against your own, as if waiting for you to open your eyes and look.
“Wife.”
Capitano’s voice surprised you, it truly did, but a part of you still refused to believe that it was, so you kept your eyes closed. It wasn’t until you felt his arm wrap itself around your shoulders and pull you close did you finally open your eyes.
“Husband,” you finally said, your voice barely above a whisper.
“Let’s go home.”
His words were simple, and you had many questions, like how he got to you so quickly, how he found you, what happened out there, but…
“Close your eyes.”
And you did.
stubborn heart ch. 10
summary | or in which capitano is told he needs a wife. and he begrudgingly agrees.
Dress shopping was … disastrous. Atri had you trying on all sorts of dresses for the so-called party the Tsaritsa was throwing. Truthfully, you didn’t want to attend, but as Capitano’s wife, well, you were afraid that you didn’t exactly have a choice in the matter.
“Why exactly is this party is being thrown?”
You huffed out the question as you managed to unzip the current dress you had on in the dressing room. You didn’t like how it fit, nor did you like the fabric. Way too itchy.
Atri, meanwhile, was still stockpiling the different dresses she thought would be good for the occasion, “either to celebrate the recent achievements that the harbingers are accomplishing, or…”
“Or…?”
“To celebrate your marriage with Lord Capitano!”
You pressed your lips together as Atri tossed yet another dress into the changing room, this one having more frills than the on before it.
“I… I don’t think this is what the party is for,” you managed to utter out as you finally fished out a dress that wasn’t too frilly nor itchy in material. In fact, it was rather plain and simple. Not that you minded. You felt like you needed something simple considering the past week you’ve had. Deciding to take a chance on it, you decided to put it on.
Atri merely rolled her eyes at your admittance, “you never know!”
And before she could say anything else on the matter, you had opened the changing room door, “well? How do I look?”
You did a little twirl in your dress. The simple design did wonders on outlining your figure, and the colors seemed to match Capitano’s clothes perfectly. Atri clapped her hands together as she huddled close to you, “simply beautiful,” she gushed as she kept admiring you, “I bet Lord Capitano will agree!”
You immediately deflated at the mention of your husband.
“Hey now! None of that pouting nonsense! Go get changed into your other clothes so we can buy this dress and get you ready for tonight! Time is a wasting!”
You could only nod to her without any argument whatsoever as she shoved you back into the changing room. Honestly, she seemed way more excited for this than you were. So, begrudgingly, you let her pull you around and shove you this way and that for the rest of the day.
And she took full advantage of it. You found yourself at many different clothing stores (in case you changed your mind on your dress which you did not), hair stylists, makeup artists, and even a masseuse.
It was nightfall when you finally made it back home, but instead of getting to sit down and rest from being on your feet all day, Atri was already helping you get ready. A glint in her eyes as she was quick to wrestle your clothes off.
“Bath. Now.”
“But-“
There was no room for argument. If you wanted to take control, then you should have thought of that earlier. Alas, your bath routine was filled with harsh scrubbing before you were hauled out and dried off in order to be tossed into the dress you picked out.
Your hair and make-up soon to follow as you hoped the night would fly by you as quickly as possible.
Your feet were already starting to hurt!
“Annnnnd, done!”
You didn’t get the chance to look in your mirror before she grabbed your coat and ushered you out of your room, your butt not even getting the chance to sit down before she threw the heavy coat over your shoulders and escorted you to the front door.
“Wait, wait, wait- what about-“
“Lord Capitano will meet you there.”
“Ok, but can I at least get a chance to breathe-“
“Breathe all you want at the party! Now, go! Seduce your husband!”
When she pushed you into the carriage, you paused and looked back at her, “what was that last-“
She didn’t let you finish as she shut the door in your face. Which left you in shambles as you finally got to, at least, relax a little bit.
“Seduce my husband, huh?”
You smiled a little as you sunk into the cushions of the carriage, the slight sway of the vehicle lulling you to sleep a little as you felt incredibly warm. You closed your eyes as you rested your head against one of the “decorative” pillows that laid inside the carriage. Your breath slowly evening out as the days’ events finally caught up to you. Hopefully, the person controlling the carriage will wake you up before opening the door, yes? And soon, sleep engulfed you. Your dreams are as peaceful as the carriage ride. Your worries melted away and the party was distant in your mind.
When next you wake up, you told yourself that you would be prepared. That you would tackle this party head on.
Instead, what you were greeted with was a strong jolt to the carriage. The sudden stop forced you awake as you sat up. Your hands rubbing at your eyes as you looked around. Moving around a bit, you went to the small window and hooked a finger onto the latch and began to open it, “are we there y-“
“Don’t open the window!”
You fell back into the cushions when the little window was forcefully closed shut, “stay in there! Don’t come out-!”
The carriage rider’s voice was cut off abruptly. A terrifying tear echoing in your ears as you watched a dark liquid splatter against the small window.
'Whatever you do. Close your eyes and don’t come out.'
