Sadistic Love 掌中雀 (2025) - Whump List

Synopsis: Helian Zheng (in the center) grew up as a poor kid until his mother married He Anran's father. Falling in love with He Anran, his love turned into hate when his mother died after being imprisoned and he's kicked out of the house. Determined to avenge his mother, he comes back five years later as the governor, imprisoning his stepfather and forcing He Anran to marry him to torment her and her father. He's also reunited with Mo Yutang (on the right), a close childhood friend, who's hiding revengeful feelings against him.

Notes: This is for all my dark romance enjoyers out there. Helian Zheng is a walking red… Tent. House. Castle. This drama is gorgeous, actors and film-making included. It’s pure eye candy. Don’t take it too seriously and just enjoy the ML for the mess he is and, of course, don’t reproduce his behaviour at home, kids. Also the bisexual undertone goes crazy in this one.

Also known as: The Wolf Hunter

Synopsis: Five years after a confrontation with poachers left him severely injured and his partner dead, the former forest policeman Wei Jiang (on the left) is only a shadow of himself. When the young ranger Qin Chuan (on the right) is reported missing, Wei Jiang is called to help find him. It turns out that Qin Chuan was abducted by the same group of poachers that killed Wei Jiang’s partner years ago. A game of cats and mouse begins.

Notes: By far my favourite kind of drama. Short, straight to the point, realistic, raw, merciless. And with a lot of whump, of course.

Synopsis: Li Jia (on the right), a 23-year-old man, goes to Hong Kong to study psychiatry for a pressing reason. His family has a genetic disease that caused his mother and brother to be diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 24 and he is desperate to escape the same fate. While racing against the clock, he meets Zhang Chacha, a young woman who works in a rental agency, and Shi Cheng (on the left), an anatomy student. Together they investigate cases involving mentally ill people and have to face their own demons.

Notes: You can thank Shi Cheng because most of the good whump comes from him (ep. 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 21). The bromance between Li Jia and Shi Cheng is really sweet and I, for once, loved the FL, as she’s witty and flirty and has the cutest outfits, so it was a delight to see the relationship between these three develop. The last episode ruin the entire show though, it's obvious they were trying to get a second season... Honestly, just skip it.

Synopsis: At Kushima High School, the only law that reigns is that of the strongest. Shiiba Gaku is a student who recently transferred there. His goal is to defeat "Shake", the school's strongest student, in order to take control of it. The only thing is that Shiiba Gaku isn't as good of a fighter as he seems to think, but it doesn't stop him from relentlessly picking up fights in order to prove his strength without ever admitting defeat. His unique demeanour inspires some other students, Marumo Taiji, Urabe Osamu and Shiro Mukai, who gather the courage to run after the same dream.

Notes: Probably one of the worst opening credits I’ve ever listened to (well, I actually found myself dancing along after a few episodes lmao, so not that bad I guess?). This drama is absolutely ridiculous, but it’s funny and hella whumpy, why would I ask for more? I just wish women were not so objectified but, well, it’s Japan. Also known as: I Want to be Brothers with You, 我要和你做兄弟

Synopsis: Gao Yang (on the right), raised by a single father, is a rebellious teenager whose only wish is to leave his hometown and live with his mother in Beijing. Not getting along with his father, the situation gets worse when he finds out that the new student in his class, Ye Xiaowen (on the left), is going to live together with them at least until they graduate from high school. Ye Xiaowen is a quiet student with multiple talents and extremely well-liked by the teachers, the exact opposite of Gao Yang, who can't stand him. Gao Yang is now more determined to leave town than ever.

Notes: The best way to describe this would be "a slow-burning bromance". These two start off not standing each other, and later on start to develop friendship. I suggest you take your time watching it: most of the whump is emotional and only hits the right way if you know the characters well (Except Jin Beibei. If you wan't to skip every single one of her scenes and negate her entire existence, you have my blessing. Amen.). If you prefer physical whump, jump to ep. 13-14.

Save Me 2 구해줘2 (2019) – Whump List

Synopsis: A dam construction project leaves a small village's inhabitants in fear they might go homeless. A church elder arrives at the exact right moment and promises relocation to the villagers who would be willing to join his church in exchange for their blind faith... and money. He's joined by an oblivious and conflicted pastor, Seong Cheol-u (center left), looking for a chance to do good deed. Kim Min-cheol (center right), a hot-headed young man who's spent the past few years in and out of jail, is the only one seeing right through this scheme, but his bad reputation lets the villagers unwilling to listen.

Notes: A lot of people know about season 1, but not about season 2. And it's a GOD DAMN SHAME. The two seasons are not related, apart from the fact it's acknowledged to happen in the same universe and that the plot is centered around a cult scam. Forget the four cute high school boys and say hello to Min-cheol, an asshole with a hoarse voice who's ready to beat you up for a glance he didn't like. And yet... he manages to be way more likeable than a lot of "regular" heroes. Also can we talk about all this whump? It's good. Watch it.

Synopsis: Lee Yeonseo is a struggling contract worker who, after drinking too much, thinks about getting revenge on her manager. She accidentally acts out on Kang Junhyeok, a famous actor and singer, and thinks she killed him. Panicked, she takes him home and prepares to get rid of the body, but Kang Junhyeok wakes up. Seeing no other option, she keeps him captive so he doesn't turn her in to the police. She eventually gets some help from her unemployed neighbor, Nak Gu.

Notes: A little UFO. I loved it, but it's definitely not for everyone (the two leads need a hard reality check). The whump is downplayed in the first part by humor, but it gets serious by the end of the 6th episode. If you like them tied up and helpless, you knocked on the right door :D

Sweet Combat 甜蜜暴击 (2018) - Whump List

Synopsis: Fang Yu (on the right) was raised to become the sole successor of the Fang Conglomerate, yet she goes against her family's objections to pursue boxing and win the championship title at the young age of 18. Ming Tian (on the left) comes from a poor family. He decided to apply for a sports scholarship despite not having any background and having to take care of his little brother and sister. Fang Yu becomes his trainer, and new feelings start to develop between them.

Notes: I know, I know, it's not what I usually go to for whumperflies either. Sweet Combat is... well, sweet. It's bubbly and colorful and cute and endeering. BUT it also has some whump (esp. ep. 5, 8, 10, 11, 16, 27, 32, 33) . The fact that the whump is so serious in comparison to the overall atmosphere makes it all the more precious imo. And I have a soft spot for sport dramas. The girls are also pretty badass!

Danger Zone 逆局 (2021) - Whump List

Synopsis: A series of despicable crimes in the city of Donglin leaves a team of police officers, lead by Tan Chong Hui (on the left), in a dead end. Among them, the young cop Ren Fei (on the right), dealing with the trauma of his mother's death, is contacted by a prisonner, Liang Yan Dong (in the center) who might have meaningful insight on the case. Wrongfully accused of assault and murder attempt, Liang Yan Dong hopes that this collaboration will allow him to clear his name and bring justice to the victim.

Notes: It was devided into two "chapters", so it's sometimes referred as one season with 24 episodes, and sometimes as two seasons of 12 episodes. Personaly, I think the second half is way less fun that the first one, but the 2nd half's ending credit is fire.
