Casa BGS by Alvaro Moragrega / arquitecto
Casa BGS consists of two small cabins connected by a living area in the middle of the Tapalpa forest. The site was chosen after careful consideration of existing trees. The volumes are disposed in such a way as to avoid any cutting of trees, the resulting scheme is not an orthogonal disposition of each volume, but a freestanding placement respecting each tree in site. Each cabin consists of a simple 2 story stone building with several openings. The stone composition is demar- cated with Douglas fir framing each door and window, resulting in a pattern reminiscent of Mondrian’s simplest paintings.

Chiang Mai Residence and Studio by Neil Logan Architect
Designed in collaboration with the owners, the house consists of three separate buildings loosely organized around courtyards and an entrance structure. All of the buildings are slightly raised from the ground and linked by covered walkways. Each building houses a different function, living and eating areas in one, sleeping and washing in another and work or play in a third.
Despite these separations the transparencies of each volume reconnect to form a unified spatial network. This is further enhanced by the site’s existing vegetation which was left undisturbed. The structure is made of precast concrete columns, beams and deck elements with wood and steel windows. The interior and exterior finishes combine wood, ceramic, terrazzo and exposed concrete.

Today I had the pleasure of taking to @rlespinal about his vision for a greener and more prosperous New York City. We'll be doing a full feature on his incredible work this fall in our upcoming issue. We talked about his new straw bill and the cabaret law repeal — and so much more. In his own words: As a NYC elected official -- but also, as a concerned member of our society -- it is my obligation to think creatively about ways we can protect our environment, which is why I am proud to have received the Sane Energy Project stamp of approval and a 100% score in the New York League of Conservation Voters @lcvoters (NYCLV) environmental scorecard for supporting significant environmental legislation. Climate change is real and environmental sustainability must be our top priority. In the past few years we have seen record high temperatures and a slow decrease in the burning of fossil fuels. Given recent national events, especially the disavowal of climate change by the White House, it is essential that local municipalities act independently to safeguard our environment, which is why I have prioritized proactive environmental strategies as a key component of my policy agenda. Upcoming initiatives include: Create regulation that will help promote urban agriculture in our city as an opportunity to inspire local self sufficiency and a reduced reliance on processed foods or transported agriculture, while adding greenery to cities, reducing harmful runoff, and increasing shading. Pushing legislation that will require green or solar roofs on new construction developments in the city to further green our city’s infrastructure. Crafting legislation that will facilitate the creation of energy micro-grids around the city to allow for homeowners to create and sell their own local solar energy. It will bolster the local economy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels from major utility companies. Urge for the MTA @mtanyctransit and the city @nycgov to switch fossil fueled run vehicles to electric. I look forward to enacting legislation and spearheading proactive programs that will use local solutions to enable long-term environmental and economic sustainability. (at Bushwick)
