A piece which didn't get a chance to be shown at the 'Surf Art' show in Santa Monica back in mid-July at the One Recovery Gallery. Water-Soluble Oil Pastels, and digitally 'remastered' a little bit with some iphone apps and photoshop.

I've been going back to some old sketches, which I never had any intention of sharing, and sprucing them up a bit to make them presentable. This one was an old pen/prismacolor sketch which I ran through a bunch of filters and photoediting programs while tracking the changes made to it. Then I crossfaded a few frames and made a video! Until July 14th, The Sacred Board Of Eddie Aikau will be on display at the One Recovery gallery, acting as homage and a final glimpse a the last known thing to be touched by a great hero. Eddie Aikau was well known during his time as an impressive surfer in his own right, winning several contests, however you could argue that his truly great achievements in life came from his talent to save others as opposed to his talents for surfing. In 1968 he became the first Lifeguard of Waimea Bay and served the City Honolulu dutifully, saving at least 500 people during his lifeguarding career. He was unafraid of the water and would paddle out to rescue surfers from 30 foot waves without hesitation, rightfully being awarded Lifeguard of the Year in 1971. In 1978 he volunteered along with 30 others to participate in a 2,500 mile voyage following the ancient migration routes of the Polynesian people, however part way through their journey their vessel developed a leak and was capsized miles away from Molokai. Confident in his paddling ability and stamina due to years upon years of lifeguarding Eddie took off on his surfboard toward Lanai in an attempt to contact help. However, in the worst kind of irony, the crew members are saved by the US Coast Guard and Eddie was never seen again. Over the course of Eddie Aikau's lifeguarding career, not a single life was lost at Waimea Bay. #eddiewouldgo I got chills after hearing this story and standing in front of this massive board. Close up for the Greg Noll painting. This guy's awesome, he started to gain popularity in the late 50s and 60s for riding 25-35ft waves in surf spots that local Hawaiians deemed dangerous or even impossible. So appreciative to be invited to participate in One Recovery Gallery's (@_1recovery ) "The Art of Surf" show at 1431 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica. Some of the surfing world's most influential artists are participating, along with some amazing memorabilia that's on display. We have the Sacred Board of Eddie Aikau, which is the last thing he was seen alive on, Patrick Swayze's board from the original Pointbreak, art from the designer's of the Rolling Stone's and Sublime's cover art and many other amazing artists who all elevate the status of surfing's art culture. I am a little intimidated by the sheer level of talent and experience brought to the table and am so thankful for the opportunity. The second page of instructions I made on how to create a clay person for a sculpting class I taught at SBHS. The last was all about making the initial form and this one's all about the detail work like getting muscle mass and proper proportions, as well with getting into creating a rough face, and giving tips on how to tell if your character is balanced enough to stand and pose without the assistance of an armature (kind of a clay skeleton if you don't know.)
