Check Lists
Finally getting some looming projects out of my life before July.
There’s nothing better than right now realizing I’ll be in NYC after September...

6am
Been a while since I’ve been up at 6am.
Getting ready to location scout the rest of the day with a national client in NYC.
Fingers crossed I’ll be back in Charleston tonight for dinner.

Shovels & Rope - After the Storm
Husband and wife duo, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, are Shovels and Rope; the song is After the Storm, the 4th track off their 3rd album (released back in August of 2014). At 6 minutes 22 seconds long, I knew before I even heard this song that I was going to be in love with it.
Call me an old soul, but I miss the time when music was more than just a two minute pop beat that was stuck in your head for days even though you couldn’t really remember the lyrics. Hearst’s raspy voice is beautifully harmonized by Trent’s smooth and steady sound. With lyrics like “But won’t you help me to get thru it/ I’ve been flailing like a child/ My mistakes they are so many/ for my loving heart is wild” it’s a song that anyone who’s ever made a mistake they’re trying to fix.
Hearst and Trent play all the instruments themselves which makes for a somber sound that not everyone can appreciate. But it gives you a chance to really hear their voices & feel the words.
Five minutes into the song, they go completely a capella and the uniqueness that is Shovels and Rope really shines through. Not quite country, not quite Americana, Hearst’s voice brings you to that place only a great song can. You let yourself feel vulnerable, you close your eyes and sway your head back and forth with absolute adoration.
