"Unconscious bias training is no way to solve ethnic disparities"
“Unconscious bias training is no way to solve ethnic disparities”
A colleague recently shared an article written by Patrick Forscher, a Research Scientist at the Université Grenoble Alpes.
In the article, Patrick comes to the conclusion that “unconscious bias training” is more of a branding device than a meaningful scientific term and that policymakers are best placed to change laws and regulations, not individual hearts and minds.
This is a interesting…

2020: my goals for this year
2020: my goals for this year
It’s that time of the year where people set out their New Year’s resolutions.
In my time honoured tradition, I have not set any resolutions. Instead, I have set a number of goals which I am aiming to complete during the next 12 months.
By publicly stating them I am hoping that this will spur me on to make sure that I can achieve my goals:
During 2020, I promise myself I will… 1. Build the…

Storyboarding
Breaking down complex communications and topics is not easy. But there are a number of tools which can help you go through a process of identifying the key messages, words and images that you want people to understand and remember.
Storyboarding is one of those.

We're helping to find Chris and Molly. Download a poster to print and share at www.burningleaf.co.uk/chrisandmolly. #findchrisandmolly
We’re helping to find Chris and Molly.
They have been missing from Headcorn since last week. Chris is autistic and his family and friends are really worried about him and want to see him return home safety.
He was last seen near Deering Woods, Pluckley wearing dark Blue Jeans and either a blue rain coat or a blue hooded top.
If you have seen Chris or his dog Molly over the last few day please…

Coffee week, doing my bit
It’s coffee week… ☕️
And anybody who knows me knows how much I love my coffee.
It’s been bugging me for a very long time about my impact on the world 🌍 Especially the number of takeaway coffees I buy (4-6 a week).
So I’ve celebrated this coffee week by purchasing a recycled cup. At the same time, a donation is provided to plant trees 🌳 🌲
Here’s the cup:

Followers of this blog will know that I’m always trying to improve myself.
I’ve commented before that I drink to much coffee, don’t do enough exercise, and eat the wrong food.
Well, yesterday, I made the decision to start a low carb diet.
After weighing in at 15st 2lbs, and feeling unhealthy, I made the decision to live a better life.
I am sharing my story through a separate blog, www.mylowcarbsstory.blog.
To help prepare for the new diet, I did a bit of research.
Looking at what contains carbs and what doesn’t really surprised me.
I created a list of foods that (a) have low carbs and (b) I actually like.
And then, to make it fell less like a ‘diet’, I created ‘Our Family Menu’ to make it feel more yummy…!

Our local village of Harrietsham in Kent is pretty awesome.
Unlike some villages it still has a ‘soul’ shaped around the hearts of the community – the shop, the post office, the Indian restaurant and the pub.
Sadly, the pub has recently been put up for sale.
But the villagers are stepping up.
The Roebuck Community Action Group has been established to look into the feasibility of making the pub a community asset.
As a village resource, we have supported the Action Group with the free development of:
a logo and branding
a website
an e-mail domain

Words may inspire, but only action creates change
Words may inspire, but only action creates change
“Words may inspire, but only action creates change”
– we love this saying from one of our sources of constant inspiration, Simon Sinek.
As a design studio we know that words are important. But we know that action actually means more.
And this guides our decisions every day.
When we were set up by our founder, Michael, we put making a positive impact right at the heart of our approach.
But…
