Chakotay/Janeway Treatise

"The woman warrior was brave, and beautiful, and very wise. The angry warrior swore to himself that he would stay by her side, doing whatever he could to make her burden lighter. From that point on, her needs would come first. And in that way, the warrior began to know the true meaning of peace."

You know, given how often the ship is knocked about, it seems strange to me that they have anything easily shattered on Voyager. Everything there should be made of some hard material that's difficult if not impossible to shatter, like some future version of plastic that isn't destructive to the environment. And/or anything delicate should firmly stick to whatever surface it's placed on immediately using some kind of future technology, and can only be removed if a person picks it up.

I like how in "Shattered" you instantly know something's wrong because Chakotay wakes up in Sick Bay without Janeway leaning over him and putting her hands on his chest the second he opens his eyes 😂😍

I will say, one of my favorite things about Picard is that most of the main female characters were played by actresses above 30, three of them in their fifties, and even the one young actress was never sexualized. True, she had a sexual relationship, but she wasn't put in sexy clothing. The only time a female character was sexualized was when Agnes wore that red dress to the gala in 2x06, and even that served a plot purpose--it was about the Borg queen wanting to attract people so that she could assimilate them.
SUCH a good show

I rather wish we'd gotten a conversation between Chakotay and Janeway after he was mind controlled into stealing her ship in 7x04. She was able to break Tuvok out of his mind control, but not Chakotay, and it bothers me that they didn't discuss that 😕 I like to think that if Chakotay had been the one instructed to kill her, it would have broken the mind control too, but I don't love that we'll never know.

Guess what show I started…
Tumblr media
[ID: Drawing of Janeway and Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager. Janeway thinks: "Wow, I am so unhinged, good thing I have a responsible and logical sidekick to keep me in check." Next to her, Tuvok is labelled as "most unhinged person you have ever met". /end ID]

Rewatching Picard, and I have very mixed feelings about what they did with Seven of Nine's character. First, the Borg implants looked TERRIBLE. I think the goal was to make the metal look faded, but the result was that they just looked like rubber. Obvious props. Second, while I actually liked the character, she just didn't feel at all like Seven. I mean, I get that it's been 19 years since the end of Voyager when s1 of Picard aired, and people can absolutely change a great deal in that amount of time. But I just don't see anything in her that remotely resembles the Seven from Voyager. It's like they just threw everything about her out the window so they could have the character they wanted, while at the same time using the nostalgia that Seven of Nine inspires to draw viewers.
Idk, what do y'all think?

Would anyone be interested in having a mass rewatch of Voyager? Because I'm rewatching it on my own right now, and I feel like it would be a lot more fun if I could do it with other fans of the show. There'd have to be some organizing involved, but it would be fun to watch it and have a live chat on discord or something. Just press play at the same time. And then we can post our thoughts about the eps on here later. Just leave a comment if you're interested. After two days I'll make a discord and send links. And if you'd like to join later on feel free to reach out and I'll send a link. Please reblog to spread the word!

I'm ngl it grossed me out when she touched his foot. Because it wasn't his bare foot, it was his SHOE. Even if you're not a germaphobe, that's just inherently not hygienic. But I do think her doing that is actually significant, because it's not like we see her routinely being unhygienic. It was as if she needed to touch him the second she got to him, no matter what she touched.
I love them.
I was watching 6x06, the episode in which Tuvok gets his memory wiped and is reverted to a childlike state, and I noticed that even though he was in sick bay, and Janeway checked on him, deeply concerned, not once did she place her hand on his chest, or any other part of his body, despite the fact that he was her oldest friend on the ship, and they were extremely close. Whereas anytime Chakotay is in sick bay, she's always putting her hands all over him. Does Janeway do that with ANYONE else? I can't recall, because I mostly focus on them, but I feel like she doesn't. Oh, she'll touch people's shoulders and backs, but I feel like chest touching is something she reserves for Chakotay. And like. She does it a LOT. After my rewatch is over, I'll document all the times it happens. It's a very intimate thing to do. I don't place my hands on someone's chest unless I'm dating them, and I'm not the kind of person who's averse to touch. I'll cuddle with friends all the time. But putting my hands on their chest the way she does with Chakotay? No. That's just. Not a thing.

I find it very interesting that there are so many people in a fandom for a show that ended over twenty years ago. I got almost nine hundred votes on my "Least favorite character" poll, and my Chakotway posts often get over 50 notes. Not that that's all that many, but it's still much more than I'd expect. For example, on my main blog, I got into a Silicon Valley kick a few months ago, and even though the show ended less than six years ago, my posts about the show routinely got less than 10 notes, and when I went into the tags for my ship the posts were sparse. So why Voyager? What is it about that show that's kept hundreds of people invested in it so long after it ended?
My best guess is that it's largely due to Kathryn Janeway. Dgmw, I think it's an extremely good show aside from her(episodes often bring me to tears, which is quite rare for television shows), but I think it comes down to her. Only three out of twelve Star Trek shows have a woman as the captain, and only two have a woman as the captain for the entire show. One is animated, one is live action. Animation doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone. Me, for instance. Not because I think that animation is for children or inferior in some other way or any such bullshit. I recognize animation as the art that it is, and sometimes I enjoy it. A friend got me to watch Arcane, and I appreciated it a great deal(though this was largely due to the story and the fact that my friend went to college to study animation, so he was able to point out all the ways that the art was extremely cool). But I prefer to watch real people, because good acting is one of my favorite things in television and movies. I love microexpressions and chemistry between actors. I find it likely that others feel similarly. So people who like sci-fi and like the Star Trek universe specifically but also want to see a woman in charge have only two live action options, and just one with a woman as the captain the whole time. I don't know what the other female captains are like because I haven't seen the shows, but Janeway is an incredible character. She's intelligent, curious, thoughtful, often wise, kind, compassionate, and fierce. But also imperfect enough to feel relatable. She makes mistakes sometimes. But she's always trying to be the best captain and best person she can be.
Also her relationship with Chakotay is compelling, so it's unsurprising that people are drawn to that ship, if they're also drawn to the fandom itself. But I think it's Janeway who really compels people.
I could be wrong, though, so it looks like it's poll time again!
If it isn't her, or even not mainly her, I'd love you to drop a comment or do a reblog telling me why you're still into a show that ended so long ago. Also a reblog in general would be great because I would greatly enjoy hearing people's thoughts.

Neelix is actually really charming me this time around. I greatly appreciate the lengths he goes to to learn about other species and their cultures. I think he's far more intelligent than anyone gives him credit for, due to the fact that he's kind of bumbling and doesn't always know exactly how to talk to people(mainly Tuvok). He's also got a great deal of kindness in him. He still annoys me sometimes, sure, but now that I'm really paying attention to his character, I like him a lot. I think the main thing I disliked about him was his jealous streak where Kes was concerned. I still don't like that, but overall, I think he's a much better person than I ever gave him credit for.
Honestly, I think his attitude towards Tuvok is kind of out of character. He does his best to make people happy and comfortable. I would maybe understand him trying to get Tuvok to smile for the first few months of knowing him, but I'm on 6x06 right now and it's been 6 years, and Neelix still doesn't seem capable of talking to Tuvok the way I know Tuvok would prefer being spoken to. Neelix actively makes Tuvok uncomfortable, which is the opposite of what he generally goes for. I don't really get it. It's almost like Neelix has a crush on Tuvok and just can't get out of his own way. Anyone else?

Lol you don't say
Watching 6x04 and something interesting happened. Chakotay went into Janeway's Ready Room, and leaned over to look at her computer screen. I feel like it's not the first time, but I can't quite remember. There's a certain intimacy to that action which I appreciate. Especially since she didn't seem remotely bothered. Idk, maybe it meant something different back when this show was aired, but I would find it quite invasive if I was on my computer and someone came into my room and leaned over my desk to look at the screen. I write journal entries on my computer, as well as fanfiction. Also, my Tumblr accounts aren't something I share with anyone I know irl. On my main one I'll occasionally vent about personal things in my life. I would have to feel EXTREMELY close to someone to be okay with them just casually looking at my computer screen without permission. I don't even think I have someone in my life right now that I feel that comfortable with. Perhaps Janeway cares less, because she doesn't do as many personal things on her computer. Then again, I'm pretty sure Chakotay is the only one who ever takes that liberty. Am I correct?

I'm very curious if people's feelings about Beltran's acting are affected by whether or not they ship Chakotway. So! Here's a poll:
I'd appreciate a reblog, because I'm curious

It's definitely true that actresses and actors can't always do what they're instructed to do, and have strengths and weaknesses. Robbie tended to fail when he was supposed to act angry about something. Idk why, but he just couldn't pull off anger most of the time imo. Robert had a bit of a hard time with that as well. Even Roxanne wasn't always great.
And yes, they were immensely lucky, as were we lol
Can't believe I never noticed how many Roberts there are in the cast. I wonder how they dealt with that. Maybe they each took a number, 1, 2, and 3, and that's what they went by. Or maybe they used nicknames. Like Rob and Robby, and then just one of them went by Robert. It reminds me of when I worked at a deli as a cashier(worst job of my life for so many reasons), and there was already another Julia there, so I had to go by Jules. And like, I know it's petty, but I've never enjoyed having my name abbreviated in any way, because I really like the sound of my name. It was far from the worst part of that job, but it was just a mild constant annoyance.
ANYWAY

I think some of them are consistently great, and some have issues at times. Mulgrew, Ryan, Picardo, Russ, Phillips, and Lien never disappointed me. I think Ryan is the strongest actress. When Seven was possessed by the Doctor, Ryan did an excellent job. But what really impressed me was when Seven was dealing with the different people she'd assimilated who kept taking control of her body in "Infinite Regress". Ryan was phenomenal. To be fair to the other actresses and actors, they weren't given the opportunity to show if they were capable of that as well; regardless, she was incredible.
The others are shaky sometimes to varying degrees. I think McNeill was the weakest. He was decent more often than not, but he was the only one who made me cringe occasionally. Wang and Dawson were good a large majority of the time, but sometimes their acting came up short. Same with Beltran, though, as has been pointed out, that was less due to lack of skill/talent and more due to the fact that he regrettably didn't want to be there at all.
