The self-directed life of Jean Khamkwan, the female director behind globally anticipated works.
Translated with google translate.
Directing stunning music videos, creating dreamy fashion films, and creating creative commercials, she's currently crafting "Chai-SHINE," a new series for Mai and Apo, making it a global sensation. Jean and Khamkwan Duangmanee are proof that "passion" is the eternal fuel that drives "dreams."
ELLE: Jean began working in fashion film before graduating with a degree in fashion design. At age 30, she's been directing for a long time.
JEAN: It was during her fourth year, waiting for her degree, that Jean shot one of her first projects for ELLE. I was lucky because I didn't love what I studied, but I knew what I needed to do next. I love fashion because it's not just about dressing up and not superficially. It's a form of communication that lets people know who we are as a person.
ELLE: Jean's work is truly remarkable for its emotional impact. She can transform every project into a work of art, whether it's a Mark Tuan commercial, an ATLAS music video, or a Dior fashion film.
JEAN: Being a female director is also relevant, and I also studied fashion, which sets us apart. If I were an actor, I wouldn't want to take on the same roles over and over again. The advantage is that people who've seen my work for a long time will know that I can do many different things. Another aspect is that the work that comes my way won't always be one way. But it's fun to work in music videos, commercials, and fashion films.
ELLE: If you want to pursue fashion, settling in for work in America or Europe might open up more opportunities.
JEAN: I thought about going before COVID-19, but then COVID-19 put everything on hold. Fast forward to now, I'm almost 30. But I never see age as an obstacle. At heart, I'm still the same kid who just graduated and is determined to get there. My passion is still as strong as ever, but I try to be more objective about my goals. (Pauses to think.) Jean recently watched the Korean drama "Twenty-Five Twenty-One" and cried a lot. The part where the mother, the current heroine, tells her ballet dancer daughter, "Life isn't a constant upward graph like a staircase. People tend to get discouraged when they're stuck on one step for a long time." Don't rush yourself too much.
ELLE: What brand would you most like to work with?
JEAN: Prada and Miu Miu. Jean loves Miuccia Prada. I love Alessandro Michele, Jonathan Anderson, and Jacquemus. I love the playfulness and fun that makes fashion accessible.
ELLE: I'm on a fashion journey, but then a new path, called 'series,' crossed my path.
JEAN: We're working on a series that's a new world for me. At the very least, the production will be different from anything I've ever done before. It's called SHINE, starring May and Apo. Jean had worked with us on the promotional clip for the KinnPorsche series Hidden Message. The studio liked our work and kept inviting us to work on the series, but this time, we just felt ready. SHINE has a team supporting us in various areas. We feel even better about starting a series with such an experienced team. Jean recently attended a local Thai product selection event with Pond (Kritsada Wittayakhajorndet, CEO of BeOnCloud), Mile, Apo, and representatives from the Ministry of Commerce. Jean thinks it's a great idea to feature local products in the series. It'll help promote the brand very well. I'd like to see the right support. This will allow for a wider variety of Thai films and series.
ELLE: Being a director at a young age and a woman, have you encountered any challenges?
JEAN: The management team is predominantly female, while the camera and lighting teams are male. The director communicates with the department heads, and everyone wants to work smoothly with the director anyway. So, we can communicate quite well. We're also fortunate to be in an era where people are increasingly aware of gender diversity, and the production crews we work with are professional.
ELLE: If Jean's life were a movie, what would the motto be? Or when would she want to tell it?
JEAN: I want to make a coming-of-age story about my 30s, which is China right now (laughs). I want to question what my other dimension would be like. I like to think I want to be rebellious, but I can't be. My family raised me to be a simple, unflappable, adventurous person. So I want to make a film that's part of my multiverse, or about people who follow their dreams.
ELLE: Who would you like to direct a film about Jeans's life?
JEAN: Damien Chazelle once said he wanted to show that everyone who is successful isn't always what people see. Some people's dreams may be shattered, as seen in movies like Whiplash, La La Land, or Babylon. Or in First Man, which presented the dark side of the dream of the first man to walk on the moon, and the price it cost. Some people died in accidents, others in family life. So, I'd like to see a Jeans film directed by Damian, because he understands people with passion.

Dangerous Fictions
The Fear of Fantasy and the Invention of Reality
Lyta Gold
In a political moment when social panics over literature are at their peak, Dangerous Fictions is a mind-expanding treatise on the nature of fictional stories as cultural battlegrounds for power.
Fictional stories have long held an uncanny power over hearts and minds, especially those of young people. In Dangerous Fictions, Lyta Gold traces arguments both historical and contemporary that have labeled fiction as dark, immoral, frightening, or poisonous. Within each she asks: How “dangerous” is fiction, really? And what about it provokes waves of moral panic and even censorship?
Gold argues that any panic about art is largely a disguised panic about power. There have been versions of these same fights over fiction for centuries. By exposing fiction as a social danger and a battleground of immediate public concern, we can see what each side really wants—the right to shape the future of a world deeply in flux and a distraction from more pressing material concerns about money, access, and the hard work of politics.
From novels about people driven insane by reading novels to “copaganda” TV shows that influence how viewers regard the police, Gold uses her signature wit, research, and fearless commentary to point readers toward a more substantial question: Fiction may be dangerous to us, but aren’t we also dangerous to it?

I saw something very sweet on the ao3 subreddit: someone introduced their 70 y/o dad to ao3. Their dad is a fandom oldie and is ecstatic that he now has a place where he can share all of his Star Trek and Superman fics that he wrote ages ago. Apparently he wrote those fics by hand and now has to transcribe them into docs. I just really hope he’ll have a lovely ao3 experience <3

i think villains in general provide better, more epic romances because they're allowed to go to extremes. they're allowed to put their love over the greater good. they're allowed to be selfish. the best a hero can offer you is number two, because their duty comes first. villains, though. villains will burn down the world for a last kiss goodbye.
