Today is Equal Pay Day, the symbolic date representing how far into the year women have to work in order to catch up to what men were paid by the end of last year—and that date is even later for women of color.

“Do the legal representatives within Macedo & Associates do undertakings?”
As many paralegal professionals do, the legal representatives within Macedo & Associates have been asked to comply with specific undertakings, and have successfully completed these undertakings.
In definition, “an undertaking is an unequivocal, personal promise to perform a certain act. The undertakings given by licensees are matters of the utmost good faith and must receive scrupulous attention” - Towne v. Miller, paragraph 11.
Under rule 2.02 of the Paralegal Rules of Conduct, all paralegals that are requested to and accept an undertaking are legally required to complete the undertakings given and accepted. If the undertaking can most likely not be done, the licensee has the duty to decline the requested undertaking as it is the licensees responsibility to complete the undertaking previously accepted under rule 2.02(3).

“Is it true that the legal representatives within Macedo & Associates act with integrity and civility?”
It is crucial to Macedo & Associates LLP to always act with integrity and civility within, and without of work hours. As all the legal representatives within Macedo & Associates have passed the “good character requirement”, we find it one of our deepest core values to act with integrity and civility.
The “good character requirement” us a licensing requirement that an applicant must pass in order to become a licensed paralegal under the Law Society of Upper Canada. As all the legal representatives within Macedo & Associates have passed the good character requirement, it is merely in our nature to act with integrity and civility. Not only this, but it is a requirement under rule 2.01(1), and 2.01(2) to act with integrity and civility. This means that although it is our nature to do this naturally, we must always ensure that we are respectful, courteous, considerate, polite, and hold our moral standards high - especially when dealing with clientele, billing for services, etc.

“Are the legal representatives within Macedo & Associates licensed paralegals under the Law Society of Upper Canada?”
As Macedo & Associates is a law abiding firm within Ontario, we ensure that all of our legal representatives that are active legal service providers are licensed paralegals that have graduated from an accredited legal services program, and successfully passed the paralegal licensing exam - leading to their P1 licence.
It is necessary to ensure that all individuals providing legal services, legal advice, legal representation, etc., are licensed under the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Under the Law Society Act, section 26.1(1), it is prohibited for an individual who is not licensed to be practicing law as a paralegal within Ontario. This specifically states, “ 26.1 (1) Subject to subsection (5), no person, other than a licensee whose licence is not suspended, shall practice law in Ontario or provide legal services in Ontario.  2006, c. 21, Sched. C, s. 22″ - Law Society Act. It is crucial to abide by this, as the penalties for disobeying the Law Society in general is overall frightening.

Is this situation correct?
Client: Hi Ms. Macedo. I'm sorry, but I can't make it to court today. I need to sleep.
Ms. Macedo: Hello client. I understand, but I would like to advise you that the judge may proceed in your absent, or you may be required to pay costs to the Plaintiff if the judge adjourns. Do you understand what I am telling you?
Client: Just tell them my husband died. It will be fine.
Ms. Macedo: I apologize, but I cannot do that. Under Rules 2.01(1), and 2.01(2) of the Paralegal Rules of Conduct, I have the duty to maintain integrity, and civility within my profession. I cannot willingly put aside my moral standards in order to fulfill your request. I apologize, but my services are professional, and law abiding.
Client: Okay. I appreciate your professionalism. I will be in court in the next 30 minutes. See you then.
