Dark Paradise, Chapter Three
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Verena stood in front of the small bathroom mirror as she looked over her reflection. She settled for a simple lilac dress for the day of packing and moving, there was no need for stockings and garters as she wouldn’t be out much. She walked back to her room and lifted Violeta from her bed. The baby grasped and buried her face into Verena’s swollen breasts.
“You’re a hungry one today!” Verena chirped out. She unbuttoned her dress and brought her breast out enough for Violeta to latch on. Verena smiled and stroked the baby’s soft cheek. A knock on the door brought Verena out of her trance, she quickly covered herself with a small towel before heading downstairs.
Verena made her way to the door and opened it to reveal Brutal. The strong man held unassembled cardboard boxes, he sent Verena a smile before speaking.
“Hope I’m not too early,” He said in that deep southern drawl that made Verena’s heart flutter a bit.
“Oh no you’re right on time!” Verena answered, “Come on in, sugar!”
Brutal made his way into the small home, having to duck through the doorway. Verena led him up to her room to start the packing there.
“We can start in here, seeing as this is where most everything is.” Verena said with a smile.
“I’ll get these boxes goin’ if ya want to start foldin’ everything up?” Brutal asked gently, Verena simply nodded. She turned away to remove the now sleeping baby from her breast, she placed Violeta back into her crib before buttoning her dress back up.
Packing took much longer than either of them thought. Both were a sweaty mess as they brought the final item out to Brutal’s truck, Violeta’s crib. They had already brought out Verena’s wardrobe, clothing, and the rest of her belongings. The pair collapsed onto the couch to catch their breath.
“Well,” Brutal huffed, “You sure got a lot of things, darlin’!” Verena laughed at his obvious observation. “We should get headed to my place if we want to unpack before the sun sets.”
“Alright, I’ll meet you out front.” Verena said, Brutal gave her shoulder a reassuring pat before heading out the door. Verena stood from the couch and gathered her purse and the basket which held Violeta. She paced the house one last time before saying goodbye and heading out the door.
Brutal stood leaning against his truck as Verena walked down the porch steps. She walked up to him and said,
“I think I’m ready now.”
“Alright, jus’ follow me,” Brutal started, “My place is ‘bout an hour out from here. Verena nodded before turning to her own truck. She opened the passenger door and placed the basket and her purse on the seat before shutting the door.
“Y’know,” Brutal called out to her, Verena turned to look at him, “It’s nice seein’ ya in somethin’ other than prison blues!” Brutal beamed, Verena threw her head back as she laughed loudly, “Same goes for you, sugar!” She called back to him.
Both trucks pulled up to Brutals one story home around 6:30. The home had a screened in porch which Verena was immediately drawn to. She could already picture herself sitting in the cool night air unbothered by insects. Verena and Brutal exited their trucks, the former following the latter up through the screened in porch and into the home.
“You have a lovely home.” Verena praised.
“Why thank ya,” Brutal started, “Although I’ve been told I could decorate better.”
“Well I can help with that!” Verena laughed.
The sun had set by the time the duo got everything moved into the home. Verena had finished organizing her clothes into the wardrobe and Violeta’s clothes into the small dresser. Said infant lay in her crib, which was rather easy to move considering the wheels on each leg. Verena gently picked up Violeta and carried her out of the room to where Brutal sat in his recliner reading some sort of science fiction novel. He looked to Verena with a small smile as she approached him.
“Do you mind watching her while I have a shower?”
“Of course not, darlin’”
Brutal closed his book and set it on the side table before taking the baby in his arms, the back of his hand lightly grazing across Verena’s chest. The brunette gave the girl a small kiss before making her way to her room. She opened her wardrobe and pulled out a peachy nightie with lace cups and a matching robe. She shuffled through one of her many boxes and pulled out her plush pink towels and her bathing essentials.
Once in the bathroom, Verena turned the faucet handle and let the water heat up. She stripped off her clothes and placed them on the counter before stepping into the shower. The warm water embraced her body as a lover would. She made quick work of washing her body, her hair could wait a few more days. She shut the water off, grabbing her towel and drying off before stepping out from the tub. Her hands found their way to her nightie and slipped it on over herself, her robe followed next which she took the time to secure tightly. Making sure to hang her towel on one of the hooks on the door, she grabbed her clothes and made for her room. She tossed the clothes in her hamper before leaving for the living room. The sight that fell upon her eyes caused a bright smile to spread across her face.
Brutal stood at the stove preparing supper, Violeta in one hand and a wooden spoon in the other. Verena walked up behind him and placed her hands on his broad shoulders.
“Whatcha making?” She inquired with a smile. Brutal peered over his shoulder at the girl before answering, “I had some chili froze over so I figured we might as well have that for supper.” Verena laid her head on his back before answering, “A splendid idea!”
The two talked over supper, well more like Verena asked every possible question about the prison to which Brutal answered patiently. There was one more question which Verena needed the answer to.
“What do you know about Percy?” She asked shyly, a complete turnaround from her eager attitude from before.
“Other than the fact he’s a spoiled rich boy,” Brutal started with a grimace, “Not much, he keeps to himself.”
Verena nodded, she could feel the tension in his words.
“Why’re ya askin’ ‘bout him?” The dreaded question.
“Just thought he was rather handsome and he’s been kind to me.” Verena blushed. Brutal snorted before saying, “Jus’ be careful with him, he ain’t the nicest boy.”
Verena gave an obedient nod even though she wasn’t going to listen to him.
“Paul invited all of us guards over to his house for lunch tomorrow,” Brutal said after a short moment, Verena’s ears perked up at this, “Seein’ as we all have Sunday off.” Verena nodded with a smile.
“Does this mean I get to get all dolled up?”
“Of course.” Brutal chuckled.
Verena helped Brutal out with the dishes after supper was finished, he was adamant that he could do it himself but Verena insisted, multiple times. Verena clapped her hands together as they finished the last dish.
“Well,” She chirped out, “Goodnight Brutal.” She cupped the man's face and brought him down to her level before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“Night, darlin’” Brutal said with a smile.
Verena awoke to a sharp pain in her lower stomach before a wave of nausea washed over her. She rushed to the bathroom, collapsing to her knees in front of the toilet. The woman began to wretch over the toilet as the contents of her stomach emptied. Thudding footsteps could be heard as Brutal rounded into the bathroom.
“Hey now darlin’,” Brutal kneeled down and brought Verena’s hair from her face, holding it at the base of her neck, “What’s goin’ on?” Verena shook her head and said, “Nothing, I’m fine.” Her body betrayed her words as she slumped down even more so against the cold porcelain.
“Don’t seem like nothin’ to me,” Brutal chided, “What’s wrong, hon?” He stood from his spot next to her to wet a rag to dab her heated face. Brutal looked to the girl as if asking the question again.
“It’s my period coming on!” Verena blurted out, tears fell from her eyes at the embarrassment of the situation.
“Alright, darlin’” Brutal sighed, “Do ya need anythin’?”
“Just help me back to my room, please?”
Brutal gently lifted Verena from the floor and brought her to her bedroom. He placed her on the bed before turning to leave the room.
“Will you stay with me?” Verena squeaked out, she really couldn’t stand to be alone right now. Brutal cleared his throat before answering, “Course.” He was glad she couldn’t see the blush on his face. The giant man slowly made his way under the covers and laid stiff as a board trying his best not to get too close but that was in vain. Verena snuggled up to his large frame, laying her head in the crook of his neck and draping an arm around his broad chest.
“Goodnight, Brutus.” Verena whispered, placing a peck to his jaw.
“Night, darlin’” He said returning the gesture, turning his neck and placing a kiss to her forehead.
Brutal’s mind raced all night about what the fuck he was doing. A forty-five year old man in bed with an eighteen year old girl is borderline criminal. But it was perfectly innocent, he told himself. He was just a man comforting a distressed young woman. He continued to rationalize with himself as he fell into a restless sleep.
Violeta’s wails awoke the pair that morning. Brutal was the first to stir into consciousness. He felt a weight on top of him and opened his eyes to see Verena had moved on top of him. Her head now lay just below his chin while her legs and arms wrapped tightly around him. Brutal gently shook the woman awake. Verena let a high pitch whine escape her throat.
“Come on, darlin’” Brutal said, “Time to wake up.”
Verena slowly rolled over so that her feet rested on the carpeted floor and her head on Brutal’s stomach. He stretched before standing, pulling Verena up with him. He took one large step over to the crib and pulled the infant to his chest.
“Mornin’ lil’ darlin’” He gave the baby girl a gentle kiss before handing her over to Verena. The brunette sat back down on the bed and began to nurse the tiny mousy haired girl.
“I’ll get breakfast started.” Brutal called out as he left for his own room to get dressed.
Violeta finished nursing around fifteen minutes later, Verena placed the girl back into her crib before heading for her wardrobe. She pulled out a white dress with bright florals and lace, a skirt slip, and her undergarments. She opened her nightstand and pulled out the most important invention known to womankind. A tampon. She marched to the bathroom to get dressed for the day. She quickly pulled on her undergarments and slip before pulling her dress down over her head. She secured the side button before stepping out of the bathroom.
Her feet padded out to the kitchen where Brutal stood setting their plates. Eggs on toast, her favorite. The two sat at the small table and talked about the book Brutal was currently reading, something about little green men.
A few hours had passed and the time came for the trio to head to Paul’s for lunch. Verena slipped on her white heels and dressed Violeta in a frilly pale purple dress. She slung her satchel over her shoulder before gliding toward the living room, baby in hand. Violeta’s basket sat on the couch, Verena placed the girl in and gave her a little kiss to which the baby smiled. Brutal walked over and lifted the basket with one strong arm before leading the way out of the home. He opened the passenger door of his truck for Verena. Once settled, he handed over the basket which Verena graciously took.
Paul’s home was about forty minutes away, the long car ride filled with Verena’s ramblings about nothing in particular. The three made their way up to the beautiful home. The white house was far out from any neighbors and had a spacious yard from what Verena could tell.
Brutal led the way around the side of the house to the backyard, Verena laughed to Brutal as she noticed they were the last to arrive.
“Well look who showed up!” Harry called out. Everyone turned to look in their direction, Verena blushed as a certain brunette's eyes fell on her form. Brutal placed the basket on the long table.
“Oh how precious!” An older woman gasped at the sight of Violeta, the baby girl sat gently smiling in her basket.
“Verena,” Paul made his way over, “This is my wife, Janice.” Paul introduced the women.
“It’s nice to meet you Janice!” Verena beamed, it was nice to be around another woman.
“Just call me Jan, honey,” Jan started, “Sorry for being so forward but may I hold her?” The blonde woman shrugged towards the baby girl.
“Of course!” Verena smiled, she made way as Jan tenderly lifted Violeta.
“Do ya mind if I show her off to the other wives?” Verena couldn’t help but say yes to the woman.
Brutal went to help Paul with the grill leaving Verena by her lonesome. She jumped as a hand came to rest on the small of her back.
“Woah now girl,” Percy grinned, “S’just me!”
“Oh Percy,” Verena gave his chest a gentle push, “Don’t you know to ask before putting your hands on a lady?”
“Jus’ figured our closeness in the locker room meant I was welcome to.” He said with a pout.
“You wish.” Verena quipped.
She watched as Percy’s eyes traveled up and down her body, she shifted under his gaze.
“You’re a mighty fine woman,” He chuckled, “Do ya know that?” Verena couldn’t help but smile to herself.
“And ya sure got a beautiful smile.” He continued, leaning into her side, his hand coming back up to rest on her hip.
“Why thank you, sugar.” Verena said in a hushed tone. She studied his face for a moment before saying, “I didn’t know you wore glasses.” Percy looked down shyly.
“I don’ like wearin’ ‘em but my aunt wouldn’t let me out the house today without puttin’ them on.”
“Well I like them,” Verena smiled, “They make you even more handsome.” Percy laughed and gave her a genuine smile, he gave her plump hip a light squeeze. The two were interrupted by Jan’s cheerful voice.
“Verena, come meet the other wives honey!”
Verena sent a small smile to Percy before walking away, she made sure to wiggle her hips a little as she did so. Percy watched as she left before making his way over to Dean and Harry.
Jan brought Verena up to the back porch to where two women sat, one a heavily pregnant redhead and the other a silver haired older woman.
“Girls,” Jan announced, “This here is Verena.”
“Pleasure to meet you, hon,” The silver haired woman spoke, “I’m Madeleine, Harry’s my husband.”
“And I’m Bonnie,” The cheerful redhead beamed, “Dean’s my fella!”
“It’s nice to meet you both!” Verena smiled, taking a seat next to Jan. Just then Violeta began to wail and smack her lips together, the girl was hungry.
“Sorry,” Verena shied away a bit, “Is there somewhere I can feed her?”
“Oh you’re fine right here!” Jan said warmly, the other two women nodding in agreement.
Verena took the baby girl from Jan and undid the button on her dress. She unwrapped the crossover of her dress and brought the baby to her swollen nipple. The three women watched on, causing Verena’s face to heat up.
“Pardon us but your daughter is just so beautiful!” Bonnie piped up. Verena didn’t correct her on the relationship, she didn’t want to bring up any negative feelings.
“What was the little angel’s name again?” Madeleine asked in her husky voice.
“Violeta.” Verena smiled.
“How stunning!” Jan grinned, Bonnie and Madeleine nodded in agreement.
“Where do your names come from, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard anythin’ like ‘em?” Bonnie inquired.
“Romania,” Verena answered, “My mama moved my sister and I here when we were young.” The three women nodded in understanding.
“How come you don’t have no wedding ring, Verena?” Madeleine and Jan shot the redhead an incredulous look.
“I’m sorry,” Bonnie spewed, “I don’t mean to be rude!”
“It’s alright,” Verena said, she hadn’t prepared for this conversation to happen, “I’m not married, Violeta’s daddy left me.” Verena quickly lied. The women shook their heads, a look of disgust on Madeleine's face.
“How terrible,” Madeleine gasped, “Men who don’t stay with the family they created should be punished.” Her voice was firm and her eyes steely. Nothing prepared Verena for the next question.
“Are ya with Brutus?” Jan and Madeleine gasped at Bonnie's question, “I was just thinkin’ cause you came in with him an’ all!”
“It’s alright,” Verena assured the woman, “My house was taken by the bank so I moved in with him.” The three women made noises of adornment.
“Such a kind man taking in a young mother and her daughter!” Madeleine praised. Bonnie and Jan agreed, Verena smiled at their kindness.
“Speaking of men,” Jan started with a sly smile turned towards Verena, “Are there any ya have your eye on, I know that prison is full of bachelors?”
“Janice!” Madeleine gasped as Bonnie giggled. The older woman was astonished by the question.
“As it just so happens,” All eyes flicked to Verena, “There is one who’s rather sweet on me.”
“Who?” All three women asked in unison before laughing at the fact.
“Percy.” Verena said blushing.
The women sat in silence as they looked at each other.
“Well that’s quite the opposite of what we’ve heard of him.” Jan said quietly as if Percy were listening.
“I know I know,” Verena said with a wave of her hand, “But he really is kind with me and he’s rather handsome, not to mention he has money.” Verena said the last part more to herself.
“He may be,” Madeline started, “But that Brutus is a kind, gentle man. I see him much more fit to be a husband and father.” Verena pondered her words before speaking.
“He’s old enough to be my own father!” The women broke into a fit of laughter.
“Sorry to interrupt ladies but lunch is ready.” Percy said as he rounded the porch. The young man immediately turned around at seeing Verena’s nursing state. The four women broke into an even more boisterous fit of laughter. Verena gently released Violeta from her breast before handing her off to an expectant Madeleine. The three wives made their way to the table as Verena waited behind. She crept her way up behind Percy as he walked and placed her hands on his shoulders.
“Thank you for not trying to take a peek at me.” She placed a kiss to his cheek before letting go. Percy chuckled before saying, “‘Course.” Verena laughed and said, “Maybe you can take a peek some time?”
Verena quickly walked away leaving Percy a blushing mess behind her.
Verena took her place next to Brutal giving him a kind smile, which didn’t go unnoticed by Madeleine across from them. She looked to see a sleeping Violeta in her basket. Her attention shifted to her right as Percy sat beside her.
As lunch ended, the group sat chatting at the table. The more time that passed, the more prominent the cramping in Verena’s belly became. She whispered to Brutal her situation to which he nodded understandably and stood to walk her into the house. Verena linked her arm with his for a little more stability, Percy watched in envy. The pair made their way into the house finding Janice in the kitchen preparing more iced tea.
“Hey there Jan,” Brutal spoke, “There anywhere Verena can rest for a moment?”
“Is everything alright?” Jan asked, her eyes and voice laced with concern. Verena gave her a knowing look to which Jan nodded in understanding.
“Jus’ follow me, honey.” Jan spoke softly. Verena went to move before turning around and pecking Brutal on the cheek. The two of them could hear an airy laugh come from behind Verena.
Jan led Verena to one of the extra bedrooms and instructed the girl to get comfortable on the bed. Verena complied and laid her head on the soft pillow.
“Do ya need anythin’?” Jan asked brushing the girl's hair from her face, “I have a hot water bottle lyin’ ‘round here somewhere.”
“That would be nice, thank you.” Verena smiled up at her, Jan returned the gesture before making her way out of the room.
Footsteps could be heard entering the room a few minutes later. Verena lifted her aching head to see none other than Percy holding the hot water bottle and a glass of water. The boy sauntered over before taking a seat next to Verena. He motioned for her to sit up, which she reluctantly did.
“Jan said for ya to take this.” Percy spoke, handing Verena an aspirin and the cup of water. She graciously took the pill and set the cup on the nightstand before laying back down at Percy’s command.
Percy placed the hot water bottle on the lower half of Verena’s belly. He moved his hand to brush her curls from her pale face, Verena took it in hers before bringing his knuckles to her lips and placing a tender kiss. A smile graced his lips before a slightly puzzled look came over his face.
“What’s the matter, sugar?” Verena asked, still holding onto his delicate hand. Percy sighed trying to find the right words. After a moment his face settled.
“How come ya told everyone your Violeta’s mama?” His question shocked Verena, “Ya told me she was your niece.” Verena sighed and released his hand, placing her own on the hot water bottle.
“It’s just easier this way,” Verena gave a half smile, “I don’t like to talk about my sister.” Tears left her eyes at the mention of Visilica. At this Percy brought himself to lay down next to the girl and wrap his arms around her. Verena turned into his chest as more tears left her eyes.
Percy whispered sweet words to her as he stroked her face. Verena’s tears had stopped flowing when she craned her neck up to look at Percy. He peered down into her glassy emerald eyes. Verena brought her hand to his face and gently stroked his now loose curls from his forehead. Her hands snaked around to the back of his head before bringing him down so that their foreheads rested against each other, she giggled at his glasses bumping her nose. She placed a light kiss to his nose, which he returned by placing one to her cheek. The two lay intertwined for what felt like hours before either spoke again.
“Can I ask you a question, sugar?” Verena whispered.
“‘Course.” Percy said, focused on a ringlet held in between his thumb and index finger.
“How old are you?” Percy was a little taken aback by the odd question.
“Jus’ turned twenty-one last month,” He said, his focus falling back on her face, “What ‘bout ya?”
“Eighteen.” Verena said, her eyes bore into him. He hadn’t expected her to be so young. Sure she looked it but she was just barely an adult.
“Can I ask ya a question?” Percy asked.
“You just did,” Verena giggled at him, Percy let out a small chuckle at her quirky attitude, “Shoot.”
“What was your sister’s name?” His question caught her off guard, she had to fight the tears welling in her eyes.
“Visilica.” Verena whispered against his neck.
“Sure is pretty.” He stroked her hair as they continued to lay in each other's embrace.
The boy and girl had fallen asleep in the hour they sat in the bedroom. Verena awoke to the sound of the door creaking open. She looked up to see Brutal standing in the doorway, carrying Violeta and her satchel.
“Time to go, darlin’” He used the sweet nickname but his eyes held disdain for the man she was saddled up with.
Verena gently shook Percy awake as she sat up, he adjusted his glasses as he rose from his position. He looked over to Brutal, his eyes flashed with fear as he saw the larger man. This didn’t go unnoticed by Verena. The party made their way downstairs and bid their goodbyes to Paul and Janice, they were the last to leave. Jan gave Verena a knowing look as she gave a slight nod in Percy’s direction. Verena just gave her a shy smile.
The walk to their cars was a silent one. Brutal opened Verena’s door for her expecting her to get in but she quickly rushed over to Percy. He was halfway in his cherry red Cadillac as Verena placed a kiss to the corner of his lips. She hurriedly jumped into Brutal’s truck, taking Violeta’s basket onto her lap. She missed the glare that Brutal sent to an awestruck Percy, the latter unfortunately catching it.
Brutal slid into the truck and backed out of the driveway. It was quiet for the first few minutes as Verena flushed thinking back to Percy.
“So,” Brutal spoke up, “What was that all ‘bout?” He kept his eyes on the road as he spoke, anger nearly dripping from his words.
“We were just talking and then fell asleep.” Verena whispered, she could feel the tension in the air.
“In each other's arms?”
“Yes”
“Thought I told ya to be careful ‘round him.”
“I know it’s just he’s really sweet on me, and young and handsome.” Verena stammered. Brutal sighed.
“I jus’ don’t want ya gettin’ hurt, darlin’”
“I’ll be okay, Brutus.”
The rest of the day had been uneventful. The three arrived back at home and listened to the radio and ate supper before it was time for Violeta’s bath. Verena plugged the bathroom sink and ran water warm enough for the baby girl. She undressed the girl and gently held her head as she rested in the sink. Verena made quick work with the baby soap and warm rag on the infant’s delicate skin. Once finished, Verena dressed the girl in her night clothes and brought the baby to Brutal so she herself could bathe.
Verena’s damp hair clung to her as she made her way to the screened in porch. She sat on the bench swing as she watched Brutal slowly rock Violeta in his chair. After, a quiet while her pent up emotions caught up to her. Verena stood from the swing and sulked over to Brutal, timidly sitting in the older man’s lap. He froze for a second before wrapping one arm around her waist, the other still holding the baby girl. Verena laid her head into his neck as tears spilled from her eyes.
It was hard not to think of her family, especially Visilica. Her older sister had always been there for her through thick and thin. Without her there was a void in Verena’s heart, a deep ache within her soul for someone she thought would always be with her. She missed the late nights where the two of them would lay awake in their mothers bed, Viorica’s hands gently stroking both of their heads. Verena felt alone, the rest of her family still being in Romania. Her aunt Ecaterina would often visit but she hadn’t been able to make it to America for Visilica’s funeral. Verena thought back to a letter she wrote saying she’d be visiting by the end of the month, she had already sent her a return letter stating the change of address. But she didn’t tell Aunt Ecaterina about Brutal.
“What’s wrong, darlin’?” Brutal asked after a minute.
“Hormones.” Verena lied, keeping her eyes down. She felt Brutal nod as he hummed in understanding. They sat there for a while just listening to the sound of the crickets and cicadas in the night air. Coyotes could be heard crying in the distance. Verena had fallen into a deep slumber against Brutal’s chest. The man carried both girls to bed, placing Violeta in her crib and tucking Verena under her covers. He placed a kiss to both their heads before leaving the room and going to bed himself.
Dark Paradise, Chapter Two
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sounds of a blaring alarm clock and wailing baby awoke Verena from her slumber. She sprung up and shut off the alarm before lifting Violeta from her crib. The baby continued to wail as Verena pulled out one of her breasts for the baby to latch onto. The infant fed greedily as her tiny hands gripped Verena’s breast. Verena stood from her bed to exit her room. The brunette crept down the stairs to prepare her own breakfast.
Eggs on toast was enough for her. Cooking with one hand was a challenge Verena quickly adapted too. Once done with cooking her meal, Verena sat at her small kitchen table. Violeta began to whine at the ceased flow of milk, Verena quickly switched her to her other breast and both continued their meals. Verena placed her empty plate in the sink before heading back upstairs to shower and get dressed for the day.
After a quick shower, Verena placed her niece back into her crib and glided over to her wardrobe. She pulled out a white blouse and a simple navy blue skirt, her undergarments also found their way into her hands. Once dressed, Verena paced over to the small dresser and pulled out a small white and yellow dress for Violeta. She quickly changed and dressed the baby before packing a large satchel full of cloth diapers, an extra set of clothes, and a few other essentials.
Verena gathered the infant and satchel before heading back downstairs. She made her way over to the couch where a blanket lined basket sat. The woman gently tucked the baby into the basket before carrying the basket away through the front door by the handle. The brunette's curls bounced behind her, she had made a futile attempt to tame them but alas they ended up being half up in a ribbon.
The passenger door was opened as Verena placed the basket on the seat, she removed her satchel and placed it on the floor of the truck. She shut the door and rounded the truck to the driver side, once inside she started the engine and took off towards the prison. Her heart raced at the thought of bringing Violeta with her but she had no other choice. She needed the day's pay so she came up with a plan. Run straight to E-Block and hide Violeta in the office. She’d deal with the other guards when she arrived.
Verena could feel her heart pounding as she passed through the gates of the prison. She parked her car and quickly gathered her satchel and Violeta. She set off in a brisk pace towards E-Block, she knew a full sprint would only raise suspicion. As her heels clicked up the stairs and to the door she stopped for a moment and took in a deep breath to calm her nerves. She pushed the door open to see Brutal and Dean at the desk. Both sent her a smile before a confused glance at the contents in her heavily sweaty palms.
“Whatcha got there?” Brutal stood from the desk to see if Verena needed help with the large basket but froze upon hearing a small cry.
“Is that a baby?” Dean said standing from the desk. Verena shushed them both, taking a few steps to close the gap between her and Brutal. Violeta began to wail, hunger wracking her tiny body.
“Come on.” Brutal led her to the locker room, opening the door for her then following her in. He had to get to the bottom of this seeing as he was second in command.
“What are ya doin’ bringin’ a baby in here?” Brutal asked in a gentle yet stern voice, his strong arms crossed over his chest.
Verena settled on one of the benches before speaking.
Embarrassment washed over her as she spoke, “Is it alright if I feed her while I explain?”
“Alright.” Brutal sighed, shifting his weight between his feet. Verena turned away as best she could before unbuttoning her blouse, her swollen nipples poking out from the holes of her nursing bra. She scooped Violeta from the basket and placed her to her chest. The baby hungrily latched on. Verena attempted to cover herself as best she could.
“Here, sweetheart.” Brutal said as placed his jacket over the feeding baby. He made sure the jacket was secure before speaking again, “Now tell me what’s goin’ on.” He looked to Verena expectantly as he sat next to her.
Verena felt so much emotion come over her at once. Embarrassment and fear causing her to lose control of her emotions and sob.
“I’m so sorry,” She spoke in between sobs, “The nanny couldn’t work today and I really need the day's pay and I panicked and didn’t know what to do!” The words spewed from her mouth as she continued to sob into her hand.
“Hey hey,” Brutal placed an arm around her shoulder pulling her into his sad, “It’s gon’ be alright, darlin’” Verena buried her face into his chest as she continued to sob.
Just then the door flew open as Paul strided in. Harry and Dean hung their heads around the doorframe. Brutal made a motion to shew them away which did work.
“What’s this I hear ‘bout you bringin’ in a baby!” Paul barked out, Brutal stood from his seat and walked over to his fellow guard. At this Paul could get a full view of the young woman who sat nursing, attempting to keep herself covered with Brutal’s heavy jacket.
“Listen,” Brutal said in a hushed tone, “She din’ have any other option, she needs the money and there was no one to watch her baby.”
Paul thought over Brutal’s words before speaking to Verena, “Stay in the office and here if ya need to bring the baby,” His voice was stern yet a caring look was on his face, “Especially today, we have a new inmate comin’ in and we don’t want either of ya in that situation.”
Verena nodded as a choked, “Thank you, Paul,” left her throat. Paul left the room sighing at Dean and Harry who were standing just beyond the door.
Brutal closed the door behind Paul then made his back over to Verena. He stood in front of the young woman and brought out a handkerchief to wipe the tears from her delicate face. Her porcelain skin was now red and blotchy. “Why’d you help me, Brutal?” She whispered to him. The tall man smiled before gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, “Well, you’re a young mama that needs all the help she can get,” He sat down before continuing, “That’s how my mama was.”
Verena laid her head against his shoulder, he gave her knee a reassuring squeeze. There was a moment of silence before he spoke again.
“Just how young are ya?” He asked, he knew she was young but didn’t know if that was just looks deceiving him. “I’m only eighteen.” Verena whispered gently. Brutal was shocked, he hadn’t expected a number so small. He patted her knee before standing, “I’ve gotta head out there for the new inmate, I’ll come get ya when it’s clear for ya to come out.” He sent her a smile, a small ‘thank you’ was heard as he shut the door.
Some time had passed as Verena now sat watching Violeta nap in her basket, she had already nursed and changed the sleeping girl. She turned her head to the sound of the door opening, Brutal stood in the doorway as he beckoned her over with his large hand. Verena quickly gathered the basket and her satchel before following Brutal to the office. Once inside, Brutal motioned for her to take a seat on the leather couch. She read the room to be good enough to ask her question.
“So how did it go?” All four men could hear the curiosity in her voice. Paul was the one to answer, “The man seems meek enough, I’d say he wouldn’t cause you any trouble.” Verena felt relieved at that. “Was a pretty normal intake.” Harry spoke up next. “If ya count Percy breakin’ Del’s fingers for no reason as normal then it sure was!” Dean piped in. Verena shook her head at that, she hated senseless violence. Her mind couldn’t help but to drift to Percy though. His beautiful face, his dark hair, and those eyes. Oh, those beautiful eyes.
“You’ll be able to meet him tomorrow,” Brutal said as he sat next to her on the armrest of the couch, “You get to just focus Violeta for the day.” He smiled, Verena gently leaned against his large frame.
“That her name?” Dean asked, giving a slight point to the baby, Verena grinned and nodded. “That sure is pretty.”
The rest of the men agreed.
“Thank you!” Verena said happily. She took a lot of pride in their traditional names.
The day dragged on slowly, Percy was yet to be seen which saddened Verena a bit. She had a crush on him at first sight. Verena was brought out of her thoughts by the sound of the office door opening up to reveal Brutal. His jacket was back on and he looked rather tired.
“I’m headed out for the night,” He was leaning on the doorway as he spoke, “Ya want me to walk you to your car?” He offered politely.
“That’d be lovely, sugar!” Verena said cheerily, a hint of tiredness in her voice.
Verena went to gather her things before Brutal stopped her to take the basket from her hand. She couldn’t help but smile at the kind gesture. They said their goodbyes to the rest of the guards before making their way to the door. Brutal led Verena across the red soil to the parking lot. Verena opened the passenger door and placed her satchel on the floor before grabbing the basket from Brutal and gently placed it down on the seat. She shut the door and rounded the vehicle to the driver side where Brutal already stood with the door hung open. She smiled as he helped lift her into the tall vehicle.
“Thank you again, for everything.” Verena leaned over to give Brutal a quick kiss to the cheek, the flustered man looked down and laughed a little before saying, “Anytime, darlin’” Verena gave him one last smile before he shut her door and walked off to his own truck. Verena watched him as went. He truly was such a kind man.
Verena arrived home an hour later around 8:00. She gathered everything from the truck and made her way into her home. Once through the door, she went to set Violeta and the satchel down in the living room. She made her way back to the front door to retrieve the mail. A gasp left her mouth as she opened the single envelope. The bank was taking her home. Verena dropped to the floor as sobs wracked her body. She had to come up with a plan.
That morning Verena awoke to Violeta’s wails, the woman quickly cradled the baby and began to feed her. A knock on the door was heard fifteen minutes later, Verena threw herself from her bed and quickly made her way downstairs. She could see through the small window that Hetty stood just beyond the door. Verena unlocked the door and moved aside for the older woman.
“Good mornin’, honey!” Hetty chirped merrily. Verena smiled before guiding Hetty to the living room, both sat down before Verena spoke.
“I’m losing the house.” Tears spilled from Verena’s eyes, Hetty’s hands immediately went to cradle the woman. Verena buried her face in Hetty’s coily hair as she sobbed. The older woman gently stroked the younger woman's back as she held onto her.
“We’ll figure somethin’ out, baby.” Hetty spoke calmly.
“I think I know someone I might be able to stay with,” Verena raised her head, “I’ll talk to him today.”
“Jus’ let me know what’s gon’ happen, Miss Verena.”
The two women sat there a little while longer, a comfortable silence settled over them. Verena looked at the clock on the mantle and saw that it was 7:30, she was late for work. She quickly handed Violeta over to Hetty and made a dash for the shower. After a quick shower, she made her way over to her bedroom and swiftly got dressed in a white blouse and dark blue wide leg trousers. The trousers hugged her plump backside and the top of her thighs. She quickly threw on a black belt and black oxfords. The brunette tied her curls back with the same ribbon from yesterday.
Verena all but flew downstairs, she gave Hetty a hug and a small kiss to Violeta before snatching her purse from the coat rack and marching out the door. Hopping into her truck, the engine roared to life as she sped out the driveway. The Prison was an hour away so she wouldn’t get there until 8:45, which meant she wouldn’t be able to leave until 9:00 that night. A groan escaped her lips as she thought over this only being her third day and she was already late.
The truck jolted to a stop as Verena parked it. She jumped from the vehicle and made a sprint to E-Block, she really didn’t care who saw her. Her feet thudded up the steps as her heart raced. She opened the door to reveal only Percy at the desk. He looked at her almost expectantly before speaking.
“Well ain’t you a lil late,” He laughed but quickly stopped at seeing her pained expression, “Paul n’ Brutal are gettin’ ya a jacket from the Warden.” Verena let out a sigh as she sat next to Percy, she folded her arms on the desk and gently laid her head on them. She was surprised when she felt a delicate hand smooth out her curls, she slowly raised her head to look at the culprit.
“Sorry.” Percy said, retracting his hand, a blush spread across his face that blurred out his light freckles.
“S’alright.” Verena said with a small smile
“Heard ya brought the baby in yesterday?” Percy said in a humorous tone. Verena groaned at the memory of that day, still not over the embarrassment.
“What about it?” Verena asked, Percy just let out a haughty laugh before saying, “Guess I’m just a lil jealous that all the other fellas got to meet her but me.” He finished with a shrug. Verena let out a small chuckle.
“Don’t worry, you’ll get to meet her soon enough.” They smiled at each other before hearing the door open.
In walked Paul and Brutal, the latter carrying what they knew to be Verena’s work jacket. Both looked surprised at seeing Verena at the desk.
“Glad ya could make it in,” Brutal chuckled, “We we’re startin’ to think ya weren’t coming back!”
“As if!” Verena laughed out. Brutal walked over to her and handed her the navy jacket and a belt containing a holster, pistol, and baton. Verena thanked him before marching towards the locker room.
Verena set the pile down on the bench before picking up the jacket. Upon further inspection, it was a woman's cut to her surprise. She slipped her arms into the jacket before doing up the buttons, the jacket accentuated her waist and flared out a bit at the hips. Next was the belt, to which she struggled until she heard the door open. She looked over to see Percy standing in the doorway with an amused look on his face.
“You just gonna stand there or are you going to help me out here?” Verena spat out although there was no venom in her words. Percy sauntered over and took the belt from her small hands with his own delicate ones. He hooked the belt above her hips and tightened until it rested comfortably on her waist. He finished by tucking her hair back behind her ears with a smile on his face.
“Thank you.” Verena said quietly.
“Anythin’ else ya need, hon?” He questioned with a smirk. Verena thought for a moment before speaking.
“Do you mind sending Brutal in, sugar?” Verena asked sweetly, “I need to speak with him about something rather important.” Percy clicked his tongue before nodding.
Verena waited for what felt like forever before Brutal came through the door. She beckoned him to sit down next to her. She noted the confusion on his face. So she took a deep breath before speaking.
“I know we’ve just met and all but I could really use your help with something.” Her voice shook as she spoke.
“What is it, darlin’?” Brutal pushed, he was looking at her with the kindest eyes. Verena felt a wave of guilt pass over her.
“The bank is taking my house and I was wondering if I could stay with you,” She blurted out, “It would just be until I can find my own place, I promise I can help with bills and any housework.”
Brutal thought for a moment before speaking gently.
“I’d be happy to help ya out, sweetheart.” That kind smile returning to his face. Verena wrapped her arms around him and sputtered out multiple thank you’s. Brutal wrapped his strong arms around her waist and buried his face in her soft curls. They stayed like that for a moment.
“We’ll get your things packed this weekend and get ya all settled in.” Brutal was the first to speak.
“Thank you so much.” Verena said, still clinging onto the large man.
Brutal broke from the hug before speaking again.
“I think it’s time ya met the new inmate, I have to warn ya that he’s massive.” Brutal said with a chuckle.
“Can’t be any more massive than you, sugar!” Verena giggled at the man. Brutal simply shook his head.
The pair made their way down the mile to the final cell. Verena’s eyes widened at the large man laying on the bed, he was enormous.
“John!” Brutal called out, “Come meet our other guard.”
The man slowly rolled from the bed and stood up, he came up to the bars and latched his hands on. Verena couldn’t believe the sight of him. She looked to Brutal who just motioned his head forward.
“Hello, John,” Verena started, “My name's Verena Anghlescu, I’m one of the guards.”
“You’s the lady with the baby,” Verena nodded at him.
“Yes that’s right.” She smiled at him.
Truth be told she had no idea how he knew about Violeta and by the look on his face neither did Brutal.
His next move was unexpected, he reached his tree branch of an arm out of the cell and placed his hand out.
Verena took it and gave it a gentle shake.
“It’s nice to meet ya.” He said in his deep voice.
“You too.” Verena smiled at him.

Dark Paradise, Chapter One
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Verena Anghelescu stared at the imposing building in front of her. The brunette took a deep breath before exiting her ancient pickup truck. She straightened out her blouse and skirt before walking into the building. Her heels clicked across the tiled floor as she traveled the long hallway to a secretary’s desk. Many men floated the hallways, giving her strange looks as she passed.
“Excuse me,” she spoke out to the dark haired woman at the desk, “I’m here to speak with the warden.” A confused look passed the older woman’s face before she smiled and said, “Right this way, dear!”
Verena followed the woman to a door which had the title Warden Hal Moores painted on. The older woman knocked, just a few seconds later a tall older man opened the door. Verena craned her neck to meet the man’s steely eyes.
“Please, come in.” The Warden said to Verena. She smiled and walked in as he held the door open. “Have a seat,” he said with a smile so small she could have missed it. Verena did as he said and sat in the chair across from the large wooden desk. The warden came over to his own chair and sat across from her.
“I understand you called about applying for a guard position Miss…” The Warden stalled for a moment, “I’m sorry but how do ya say your name, I’m ‘fraid I’ve never seen anythin’ like it?” Verena let out a light laugh.
“It’s pronounced ang-ya-les-coo, Sir.” Verena made sure to emphasize the pronunciation of her name. Her mothers surname made it through the immigration process, Viorica Anghelescu was a stubborn Romanian woman that wanted to keep her name alive and not become lost to indoctrination.
“Alright, Miss Anghelescu,” The Warden started, “How come you wanted the guard position and not one of the many nurse positions?” Verena knew this question would come up.
“Well, Sir,” Verena took in a breath, “The guard position pays more, I have a baby girl to take care of and I’m on the verge of losing our home to the bank.”
The depression hit Verena hard even more so now that her mother and sister, Visilica, had passed on. And Violeta, her niece, was only a month old. Viorica succumbed to sickness a few years ago and Visilica had perished due to complications from childbirth. Verena hung her head slightly as tears pricked her eyes. The Warden saw this and let out a sigh.
“I tell ya what,” Verena perked up a bit at his tone, “I’ll start you as a guard on E-Block but if there’s any complications you’ll be moved to a nurse position.” The Warden finished with a stern look.
“Thank you so much, Sir!” Verena beamed. The Warden gave her a small smile, before standing.
“We can provide a uniform jacket but you’ll be responsible for finding skirts or pants, you’ll be reimbursed for the money you do spend.” Verena nodded, the smile never leaving her face. “Follow me and I’ll show you to E-Block.”
The walk to E-Block was a decent length, the red soil kicked up with each step the Warden and Verena took. They soon came upon a tall cell block with the letter ‘E’ in bright white. Warden Moores swung up the metal door and led Verena inside. Verena looked up at the feeling of multiple eyes on her and she was right. Five men all stood staring at her with slightly confused faces.
“Gentlemen,” Warden Moores started, “I’d like y’all to meet your newest coworker, Verena Anghelescu.” The first man was tall with dark hair and light eyes, “Paul Edgecomb, I’m the head of this block, Miss Anghelescu.”
He held out his hand to which Verena took it and gave a firm shake, “Hal, can I speak with you in my office?” Paul asked the Warden before Verena could say anything. Warden Moores nodded with a knowing look and followed Paul down a short hallway.
The second man to approach was the largest. He had greying hair and kind blue eyes, Verena knew he was the largest man she’d ever seen. He was barrel chested with large arms and legs not to mention quite handsome. He stuck out a giant hand which Verena gladly accepted, “Brutus Howell, but everyone calls me Brutal, Miss.” Brutal said with a smile.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Verena started, “Please, call me Verena!” Brutal gave her a small smile before nodding and stepping aside for the other men.
The next two men were Dean Stanton and Harry Terwilliger, Dean was tall and thin while Harry was the oldest of the group. He had large eyebrows, Verena noted to herself. The final man came to stand in front of her, he was only a few inches taller but Verena could only describe him as gorgeous. He had delicate features, jet black hair neatly combed back, and piercing blue-grey eyes. He was definitely the youngest of the group, looking barely out of his teen years. He extended his hand to Verena.
“Percy Wetmore,” He said almost smugly, “Say, what’s a pretty young lady like you doin’ workin’ in a place like this?” There were audible groans from Dean and Harry.
“Percy.” Brutal said in a warning tone that fell on deaf ears. Brutal sighed.
“Well, if you must know,” Verena started cheerfully, “I’m a single woman with a baby that needs to be fed.” Silence fell over the room as Percy gulped. “I see.” Was all the short man said before backing away. The rest of the men dispersed, Dean and Harry left the block while Percy still couldn’t be found.
“Well,” Verena started, “How ‘bout a tour?” Verena asked sweetly. Brutal stepped forward before asking, “Where would ya like to start?”
Verena thought for a moment, “Maybe with the inmates?” She suggested with a smile.
“Right this way,” Brutal started, “Make sure to stay centered on the aisle, Miss Verena.” Verena let out an airy laugh, “Please, just call me Verena, sugar!” She chirped out, her southern drawl sounding sweet.
“If you say so, Verena.” A soft smile spread across his handsome face, a blush forming at the nickname. Verena smiled back, their little moment was broken by a Cajun accent.
“Who ya got der, boss?” A small, balding man was peeking out of his cell using a small mirror. Brutal nodded towards the man as he started over to him, Verena followed close behind.
“Del, this is Miss Anghelescu,” Brutal announced motioning towards Verena, “She’s our new guard.”
“You sure is the perttiest guard I’ve seen.” Verena felt uncomfortable under the man’s gaze.
“Watch yourself, Del,” Brutal warned, “You’re to treat her as you would me.”
“M’sorry, Boss.” The man shied away back to his bunk.
“I’d let ya meet the chief but he ain’t one for talkin’” Brutal said, Verena nodded in understanding. “I’ll show ya the rest of the mile, follow me.”
Brutal led Verena down a short hallway, making sure to point out the restroom, then stopped between two doors, “This here is the locker room and that is Paul’s office, we’re all welcome to the office.
Verena could hear Paul and Warden Moores arguing about her being there. Brutal picked up on this and let out a sigh before saying, “He’s jus’ worried ‘bout having a woman ‘round such a dangerous place.” He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, Verena placed one of her own hands on his larger one before speaking, “Well it’s a good thing I have someone as big as you to protect me.” She chuckled lightly. Brutal laughed, “Come one, I’ll show ya the rest.”
Brutal opened a large steel door and motioned for Verena to walk through first. She froze at what she saw, there against the right wall was the beast itself. The electric chair seemed to stand tall against the rest of the room. “That there is Ol’ Sparky.” Brutal said just above a whisper. “No offense,” Verena’s voice shook the smallest bit, “But he’s quite menacing.”
Brutal let out a laugh, “That he is but you’ll get used to him soon enough.” The room smelled damp and the air was a tad too thick for Verena’s liking. It was also the hottest room in the building, her dark curls becoming frizzier with each passing second.
“The last room is the tunnel but that can wait until later.” Brutal voiced, Verena just nodded. The heat of the room was becoming unbearable.
The pair walked together back to the front desk. Verena was glad to be back in the slightly cooler room, she could feel her body becoming slick with sweat. A light sheen shone across Brutal’s forehead. She couldn’t imagine how he felt in that dark woolen jacket.
“Can I ask you somethin’?” Verena spoke out, Brutal nodded with a smile, “Shoot.” He said.
“How the hell can you stand being in that jacket?” The man let out a laugh at her bluntness, Verena couldn’t help but laugh with him.
“S’not too bad once ya get used to it and we’re allowed to take em off.” Brutal answered with a smile. His smile was truly contagious. Brutal offered for Verena to take a seat at the desk to which she complied, the large man pulling out a chair for her. Brutal worked at the buttons on his jacket for a moment before breaking free from the stuffy fabric. Verena couldn’t help but stare as his muscles flexed beneath his white shirt. Brutal placed his jacket on the coat rack before rolling his sleeves to elbows and loosening his tie.
“Can I ask ya a question now?” His voice brought Verena out of her dazed state. She smiled and nodded for him to continue.
“How come you’re raisin’ a baby by your lonesome?” Wow. Not the question she expected, Brutal noticed the startled look on her face and quickly said, “M’sorry, Ya don’ have to tell me, I was jus’ curious!”
Verena laughed at the older man’s panic.
“I don’t mind you’re asking,” She said gently, “I’m raising my niece, her mama was my older sister.” Verena got misty eyed at the mention of her sister but continued, “It’s just me and Violeta now.”
“You both have such beautiful names,” Brutal said, “Where do names like that come from?” He asked to lighten the dampened mood.
“Romania.” The brunette said with pride.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” Brutal said in amazement, “I ain’t ever met a vampire before!”
Verena let out a loud laugh at that, Brutal had quite the sense of humor.
The sound of the office door opening startled both of them out of their relaxed states. The Warden was the first to come into view, Paul trailed slightly behind him. There was a pained look on his face that was gone as soon as it came. The two men stopped in front of the desk as Verena looked on expectantly.
“I see you’re all settled in!” Paul chuckled, Verena smiled at the older man. “Brutal already gave me a tour of the place and introduced me to Del.” Verena fought back a grimace at the image of the man popping into her brain.
The Warden said his goodbyes and wished Verena luck before making his leave. Paul gave a look towards Verena and Brutal before saying, “Miss Anghelescu, you can shadow Brutal for the rest of the day.”
Verena smiled before saying, “Alright sir but please just call me Verena?” She asked the man.
“Alright but only if you stop with that ‘sir’ nonsense, you’re makin’ me feel old as hell!” Paul laughed.
The day passed rather quickly and before Verena knew it, it was time to go home. Dean and Harry had left around an hour ago leaving Verena, Brutal, Paul, and Percy. Verena had said goodbye to Paul and Brutal before was heading for the door when she heard a voice from behind her.
“Here,” Percy started, “Let me get the door for ya.”
Verena decided to humor this behavior, Percy slipped past her and held the door open as she walked down the steps. “Thank you, Percy.” She called to him.
The young man looked as if he wanted to say something but kept his mouth shut, Verena noticed this and asked, “Would you mind walkin’ me to my truck?”
“Of course not!” Percy said almost desperately.
The pair walked in silence until they reached Verena’s truck. “Here we are!” She chirped as she went for the handle of the door.
“M’sorry,” Percy blurted out, Verena’s head snapped in his direction, “For what I said earlier, I din’ realize you were a mama.” The dark haired man looked ashamed.
Verena turned fully towards him and said, “It’s alright, sugar,” She laughed a little when she said, “If it makes you feel any better, I’m not a mama, I’m an aunt.” A small smile spread across her face as a look of relief washed over Percy’s face.
“Will I see you tomorrow, Percy?” Verena asked gently.
“Yes, ya will.” Percy said with a lopsided smile before turning to walk away. What an interesting, beautiful man.
The ride back to Verena’s home was long and dull, she kept replaying the day's events over in her mind. It was around 8:30 when she rolled onto her driveway. She exited the car and made her way up to the front door, took her shoes off and walked to the living room.
“Good evenin’, Miss Verena,” Said Hetty, the nanny, who sat in the arm chair, “I take it you got that job you was aimin’ for?” The older woman said with a smile.
“I sure did!” Verena could barely mask the excitement in her voice. “Good Lord, honey, I’m proud of ya!” Hetty said standing from the chair to hug Verena
“I just got one question for ya, girl.” There was a mischievous smile upon her face.
“And what’s that?” Asked Verena suspiciously.
“Ya find any good men?” Hetty laughed out although she was quite serious.
“Oh, Hetty!” Verena cried out in embarrassment.
“What?” Hetty laughed, “Was just a simple question?”
“Well if you must know,” Verena dragged out the suspense, “There’s two I have my eye on!”
Hetty let out a laugh and brought the younger woman into her arms again. She had been pestering Verena about finding a man for awhile now and hearing that she found two potential suitors made her nearly shed a tear.
“Well then,” Hetty started, “You have a good night, baby!”
“You too, Hetty!” Verena walked Hetty to the door and watched as she walked across the lawn to her husband's car where Malcom sat waiting for his wife. Verena shut the door and locked it before making her way upstairs to her bedroom.
Violeta lay peacefully asleep in the crib beside Verena’s bed. She gently stroked the infant's face before turning to grab a nightie from her wardrobe. She slowly undressed, the exhaustion finally creeping up on her. The woman sighed in relief as she was released from her bra. Her large, swollen breast hung freely, she would need to nurse the baby later in order to be comfortable enough to get a good night's sleep. The brunette slipped into her nightie before getting into bed. She made sure to tie her hair back with a ribbon before sleep encased her.
It was 3:45 in the morning when Verena awoke to infant cries. She sat up in bed and switched the dim light on before gently scooping Violeta into her arms. Verena freed her breast from her nightgown and brought the baby girl to it to which she instantly latched on. As Verena sat nursing the baby a troubling thought popped into her head, Hetty wasn’t able to watch Violeta tomorrow and Verena had to be at the prison.
Verena let out a loud sigh. Tomorrow was going to be an interesting day.
