Reflection
Over the past semester Photography, particularly self-portrait work has been the topic we have followed. Self Portrait has offered a unique lens through which i can explore and understand. Reflecting on my journey with photography, I've come to realize how is so much more than just capturing images but also about capturing moments, emotions, and stories.
We first started with self portraits. When it was just me and the camera, I was experiment with lighting, angles, and expressions. The choice of lighting, whether it's outside natural light. Or working within a studio where I had access to lights and diffusers. Reflectors, were especially helpful when in the studio, being able to shape light to enhance or soften features.
Working with others has expanded my technical and creative horizons. Working with family has also open myself up. Taking time to have a conversation with each person while I photography them. Each person brings their own unique presence, anf by taking photos I was able to adapt and highlight their them. The choice of lighting, the positioning of polystyrene boards and the use of different metering modes/iso became decisions that shape my final images.
Overall I was very happy with my outcome of images. I felt like I had learned more about myself as a photographer bit also how to correctly use my camera. Moving forward I want to explore the world more and jump outside of my comfort zone.

Draft 2
“CORNER COUCH”
A home is perceived in many different ways. Home is what you make of it. A can ideally be a safe place, a place of focus, a place of relaxation or hecticness. Project “Corner Couch”, highlights this as we explore our home. Throughout this photo book I wanted to showcase my family in a recurring spot. With four permanent members, two adults and two siblings with the occasional stay of my grandparents. As well as my partner who stays from time to time. With this exposing the view of an intergenerational home. With the appearance of each person and how they personally interact with spaces within this space. Showcasing aspects of my home that are used for the multiple, or spaces that are more for the individual. As I grow older I wanted to capture these moments to reminisce on as I become more aware of people growing old who are close to me. This particular space in my home is used often but isn’t noticeable. The sense of repetition explains a story of how each individual can use a space in their own sense. Inspired by photographers such as Carrie Mea Weems and Barbara Probst, showcasing aspects of their work to strengthen mine. Encouraging the candid approach allows for showcasing of images in a relaxed and authentic feeling in photography. Blending the images together to create a seamless feeling that can capture genuine moments in time. Working with light colour and dark colour hues to pay homage to the difference in perspective but also time of day. Ultimately looking back on space in my home and how it can reflect the thinking of one person and the actions of another.
Throughout this photobook, you will see much of the same but difference of perspective. Creating spaces that are used often and repeatedly capturing moments in time of people enjoying the space. Grabbing inspiration from Barbara Probst and her inspiration for juxtaposition experimentation.
Creating multiple views of images to view a full image as well as receiving as much information. This produces images with intent. In addition Carrie Mea Weems' work motivated the constant idea of repetition. Throughout this assignment I looked at spaces within my household that are of frequent use. Exposing elements of 52 John Dee Crescent. By dividing these spaces as we experience each space differently. Capturing the variation in images from the influences such as time of day to family environment. After much research and looking at commonly used spaces I came across “corner couch”. A space that is quietly tucked away in the corner. Tucked in the quiet corner that creates a seamling loud sitting space as it becomes the preferred place to sit while in the lounge. Walking through the members of my household and showcasing their own emotions as they discover and interact with “corner couch. From the early mornings to the late nights. Focusing on the individuals while they sit. With use of light and after processing editing I was able to create a set of photos ready for the final stage. After conducting research, I explored various photo books and websites where my work could be published for public viewing. After grabbing inspiration, since I used my own living space as the subject, I thought it would be fitting to create a coffee table book. A collection of photos that serve as home decor. A coffee table book, with its thick pages and minimal text, would showcase my work effectively. A hardcover with textured writing could emulate the feel of the couch featured in the photos. This would also be a great way to advertise my couch for sale or for the company to showcase the couch. The book could be displayed when potential customers view the couch. "Architectural Digest" publishes similar books that highlight people's homes and their furniture. Displaying photos that enhance a space. Another way to get my work into the public eye would be by adding the set of images into “HOME Magazine”. Home magazine is very similar to Architectural Digest but is based on homes in New Zealand. This helps reach more domestic customers rather than international. Last but not least the unlimited publisher I would want to feature my work would be “Frankie Magazine”. Frankie Magazine, an Australian publication, covers topics like people, fashion, photography, and architecture. I believe my work would be a great fit for their "people" category, where they interview everyday individuals. Through this platform, they could interview me, allowing my work to reach their audience.
"I need to bulk up this as it is only at 750 words and needs to be at 800 minimum"

Photo Book Headings Explained
week 12
Know if I had it my way I wouldn't have words next to my photos. I just don't like it. I feel like It take away from the photobook itself. If I was to have words I would have a little blurb at the start or at the end explaining the book. I like to leave the reader to have his/hers own opinion about the book based purely off the photos, and only then tell them about it. I feel this way I can get pure feedback off the book. So as a requirement I added working, just adding subheading of who is featured in the photo. I decided to just add their title name and not their personal name as I like privacy and appreciate it. So I wanted to respect that value I have for myself into my work.

Week 11 Dog PhotoShoot

This week out of complete randomness we had the opportunity to photograph a border collie "Scotty". Taking him into the studio and using him to pose as our model. Working side his size and colour, we were learning how to use light to bright his smile as well his fur from behind. Having a light from behind would light his backside to enhance the view of his fur, then using a front light which would brighten up his smile and his eyes. we had him up on a box so I could get the perfect view of his whole body, as we were wanting to get body shots.
Once we had the height right, we could work around him. Working with the focus of the camera to make sure that his nose was perfectly in focus. I had a chance to take photos of Scotty and it was a nice experience to be the one behind the photo.

Nikki S. Lee
Nikki S. Lee. Her work "Projects" is a long piece of work that has many layers in regards to who she is shooting. Over a period of time she explored spaces and areas, taking photos of what she saw.
One project mentioned through the book is “The Punk Project (6)” Self oberseing her self is the best way. She would dress up in her chosen subject such as punk. This way she was inherently exploring her project without making the people she was photographing uncomfortable.
Her Book Projects the difference on how different ethnics perceive life.

Next Steps
week 11
Now drawing closer and closer to the end date, and finally coming to a draw on the name. I feel like I finally have a direction and hopefully I stick to it as I don't really have time to change it. I want to continue to keep shooting images I feel that I need to. I want to have a little more depth to my images and variation. I feel like many of my images are taken within the same daylight period or same time of day. So I want to explore taking more images in the morning.
Working with the space a little more differently as, creating more depth. Also exploring the idea of not having a face in the image I feel like this could add a new feeling to my project as sometimes don't want to be seen.

I came across her book as I looked through the photobook we had available at AUT Library. I found her book help in regards to spacing and layout.
She had clear margins and each images could be paired with each image. This helped with the flow of images and made it easy to read.

Current PhotoBook
week 11
Since I have changing my direction I took some photos away from photobook, so I could purely focus on the corner couch. Looking at different elements and how I could structure my photos. Making sure that they are even and well presented. Next step would to do 2 more shoots before I handed so I could add a little more to my photobook.

Name Change
Week 11
Up until now I was set on a having a collaboration of images centre around different parts of my home. But I work further into this project and start to narrow down my photos I started to find that my work was centred around one part of my home, instead of multiple. So after looking through the cutting down some of my images I changed my Name to “Corner Couch”. As majority of my photos are focused around this area of the coach . I feel like this will also have a better narrative as before I felt like I was trying to make sense of my work and not actually having a clear view.

week 10

With the creation of the name of my photobook. I wanted to capture photos that correlate with the name. So going back to the beginning I asked my model on how they would interact with the Mailbox as if they were collecting mail. Working along the shape as the mailbox is off centre and lying to one side. I do like how the mailbox is off to one side.

MELISSA ANN PINNEY
Melissa is a photography whose work focuses on young woman and girls growing up in america. Looking into their identities and how they are emerging to become young people. Even though her work doesn't completely co-inside with my work. I feel like I can take inspiration from her as many of her photos focus on young girls in their daily routine.
Pinney, Melissa Ann. n.d. “Mother and Daughter, Halloween, Chicago | the Art Institute of Chicago.” The Art Institute of Chicago. https://www.artic.edu/artworks/182710/mother-and-daughter-halloween-chicago.
Mother and daughter, is an image in found interesting and I felt I could grab inspiration from it. A mum and daughter cuddling on teh coach. You can see them using their environment with this you can also see they are relaxed, happy to be in eachothers comapny.
Pinney, Melissa Ann. n.d. “Emma at Eleven (Cellar Door) | the Art Institute of Chicago.” The Art Institute of Chicago. https://www.artic.edu/artworks/192866/emma-at-eleven-cellar-door.
Another image I liked was Emma at Eleven (Cellar Door). This to me showed Emma house, this was hers. Showing her environment and how she was happily courageous enough to stand there and pose. Grabbing insparation off this I feel I could do a shoot outside of my home. Working with the mailbox or garage door. This could add depth to my photobook.

Questions
week 9
What and who will you portray? My family and the odd appearance of my grandparents and family friends
What might you communicate visually through the concept of portrayal? Looking into my family home and how each person can interact differently with the spaces they are in
What is your position on your subject matter? A person who wants to explore people perspectives in a spaces that I used regularly.
What is your voice? What is unique about your subject or your approach to it? My voice for this project is to explore spaces and people perspectives in my home as a person who uses these spaces regularly. I want to capture a glimpse into people's emotions and their feelings. Having more extensive understanding on how tehy relate themselves to their surroundings.
What do you have unique access to? A group of people, a place, a situation…? During this project I have the added advantage of being able to continuously shoot in my chose space as I live there and people are always coming in and out.
Consider the important role the "title" takes in communicating your intention and how audiences might ‘read’ the book. What is your working title? My current working title is "52". This coming from the number my house is situate at. When the audience reads I want them to look at a family and how this one family interacts with their home.
What would you like readers to think and feel? I would like readers to feel warmth and sense of comfort. But also a helpful sense knowing that its okay to grow up and grow old.
What is the role of the text within the book? How does the text relate to the story the images tell? How do they work together? Working alongside each of the images will be a caption that works in relation to the image itself. Helping assist the reader to capture a glimpse of emotion.
How many shoots do you require to gain adequate coverage and successfully tell the story? I believe that 7 shoots, including the 14 day challenge will help gain adequate coverage to tell my story.
Do you need gear and support with your shoots? What is your plan? I don't have much support but I do occasionally have an assistant to hold the reflector.
What software and workflow will you use to edit, process, collate and design your photobook PDF? I use Camera Raw as well as Photoshop/Lightroom for cropping and further adjustments. For creating my photobook, I will use InDesign, as I feel most proficient with it. InDesign will also enable me to use my preferred founts and establish a clear grid system for both text and images.
What is your research plan? To explore photographers who have similar interest as myself and research their type of techniques. Looking into their past work and taking inspiration for future work.
What other photo books have you looked at? Barbara Probst, Jeremy cost, Adrian Morris as well as Carrie Mea Weems. I will continue my research so I can build a better understanding in what type of shoots I will continue to take.
Are there decisions that have yet to be made? How will you resolve these? My most important decision right now to continue to create opportunities to take more photos.

Week 9 - Analysing Isobel Photos
This week we looked each other work. Isobel and I decided to swap our work. Isobel work is very strong and you can understand her link between photos. Working alongside her theme she is looking at her friends and how they are getting through their 20s. Many of her friends are all studying something different which gives nice touch as you can see something different with each person. Her working title is cleaver and playful.
I think I would like to see images be more colourful as I feel your 20s can be both colourful and scary. Exploring the the link between your 20s and life. But also finding a way to seamless link her images together as she is exploring different people. I would definitely look at taking more images as I feel she doesn't have enough, but I love what she has so far as I can see her vision. Next question would be what would your captions be?

week 9

I was lucky enough that this week we had a get together so, many people were at my home meaning I could take photos of people in areas of my home. I felt like I managed to get loads of photos but the ones I pulled I think are the best and will fit best with my concept.
