Hey guys remember how Catra found it in her heart to show some vulnerability to people in s2 and it immediately backfired on her enough to get her sent to her death?

On a second viewing of She-ra and the Princesses of Power, it strikes me that it’s very easy to read the Shadow Weaver business as an explicit criticism of the whole idea of redemption arcs.

Like, you think Shadow Weaver should have had a redemption arc?

As far as she’s concerned, she did.

Basically everything she does after defecting to Brightmoon is just her methodically ticking off every box on the “redemption arc” checklist in the most awful, cynical way imaginable.

Like, she even manages to turn heroically sacrificing herself into a passive-aggressive guilt trip, in the process denying the audience the simple catharsis of seeing a bad guy go down – leaving us stuck with the knowledge that she went out smugly confident that she’d completed her redemption arc and was officially on the side of the angels, and nobody’s ever going to be able to challenge that narrative because she immediately blew herself up.

I can’t imagine it’s accidental that the show gives us a character who technically does everything the genre’s formulas demand in order to earn her redemption, and thereby makes a travesty of it.

Did anon forget that Catra was canonically like 17ish to 21ish during the series?? Yeah she did terrible things (because she was raised in a HORRIFICALLY abusive place) but she also REALIZED that she should change herself and DID by her early 20s despite the fact that multiple times in the series she receives harsh punishment for expressing kindness. Shadow Weaver was a fully grown adult long before the series started and she knew she was terrible the whole time but instead of fixing that about herself she just did the bare fucking minimum to “technically” get redeemed. And during that time she continued to manipulate Glimmer so that she could gain power again.

it’s almost sort of an offhand comment but in tlo dionysus says something along the lines of how the connection between olympus and the West TM is more tenuous than ever and if kronos succeeds in defeating the gods then their influence will end and they’ll be gone Forever, but at least in my memory it barely seems to be a factor in percy’s fight against kronos–except now i’m remembering that, yes, their rallying cry is “for the gods,” but at the same time… it seems to me like he’s fighting for his fellow campers, and for the people of new york, first and foremost. the gods are almost an afterthought

which is part of richard’s course correction wrt the dominance of the “flame of the West” as the driving force of civilization, obviously, but it’s also a function of… well, where would the gods hypothetically move after that? cultural power in the twentieth century ostensibly moved westward from new york city to los angeles with the advent of hollywood, but where would it be today? seoul? beijing? tokyo?

except that makes no goddamn sense, because a) those places had relatively minor exposure to greco-roman mythology via exploration/colonization b) china especially as a civilization is way older than classical greece and c) they have their own cultural mythos which, if superimposed with a greco-roman coat of paint, would be …. uh… i think the correct term here is “sussy af”

SO that’s why i think richard introducing other pantheons into his franchise was a really really good idea, and is part of this massive course correction as the conversation around western imperialist hegemony becomes more and more nuanced. a cash grab? maybe. and maybe richard isn’t the right person to portray or play around with different mythologies, but again, it’s really strong evidence of how he recognized critiques of his work and incorporated them, which, tbh, i think is really admirable. i mean, look at jkr, who doubled down on unfortunate implications so hard that she is now one of the most recognizable faces of a hate movement, and look at richard, who was part of the first wave of ya lgbtq protagonists in the early 2010s (oh god that sentence just hurt me to write)

Hey, uh, anybody else emotional about Melog imprinting on Catra? Because that means Catra’s now Melog’s person, the one they put first and support and protect, and Catra has always craved that place in someone’s heart (as that one article explained so well). Not to mention them choosing to imprint on her meant they trusted her and saw something worthy in her.

Catra was still very new to the good side at that point and was only one episode (plus a few minutes bookending 5x07) out from her crisis of conscience episode where she was trying to push everyone away out of feelings of guilt and unworthiness. This new creature meeting her as a blank slate and giving her the message that they saw something good and worthy in her and were willing to follow and trust her was actually probably a big step in her being able to accept her own goodness. Plus, it gave her the emotional support of someone to talk to that intuitively understands her emotions and makes her face them, even if she doesn’t want to.

And, of course, Melog provides the physical comforts she still feels weak for wanting without her having to ask.

Tbh I think Catra kinda needed Melog in her life before she could let herself open up and really feel and express her love for Adora. They showed her that she’s worthy of love, affection, trust, and loyalty. They showed her that she is capable of dealing with her emotions in non-destructive ways. They forced her to confront her deep hurt over Adora’s choice in “Failsafe” and put words to what her problem was. And they taught her how to be loving and gentle without being weak.

i have faced it, a life wasted by catrasredemption - catradora, modern au where catra and adora are separated after a big accident that changes everything for them. very good, very deep, made me cry, READ THE TAGS! i’d also recommend when all she is, and ever was, in compromised, because it hurt me deeply, and cast some light (it’ll be alright), which features soft artist catra <3

i couldn’t get very far without recommending anachronism by chellethewriter - seriously, both anachronism and immemorial have made me cry almost every update. catradora but they have to live the worst 3 years of their lives all over again and live with the consequences. the angst factor is INCREDIBLY HIGH. also, forever, if you want, because vampire catra owns my heart, and the vanishing point, a catra study that made me cry. a lot.

find a new place to be from by sevensevan - ongoing glimbow and catradora ghostbusters fic, feat. trans bow and nonbinary adora! very powerful and the concept leaves me in tears. recent updates have made me cry repetitively <3

you did something to me and the blood in your mouth by artemiswords - both of these fics are INSANELY POWERFUL and i was really surprised by how accurate the season 5 predictions in the blood in your mouth were! both fics are catradora-centric - a fake dating au and a season 5 speculative fic that HITS

this whole series by buckysbears - catra-centric, focuses on her relationships with the bfs and her trauma, really worth the pain that comes with it! i’d also recommend time take us, a chronic pain adora au with a little bit of implied glitradora thrown in, and made for you, which ;w;

mark my words by lologoblins - catradora flower shop/tattoo artist + soulmates au, very soft and pure fluff with catra and adora being absolute gay messes and mara being hilarious

keep your money (you can take my time) by ehj - catradora coffee shop au from adora’s pov, you can feel the Gay Mess seeping from this one and i love it unconditionally

daylight and bouquet by fuhadeza - post-season 5 catradora being incredibly soft and fluffy and post-season 4 catradora learning to love respectively, both of which are incredibly soft and made me cry for entirely different reasons 

the aftershock (of your touch) by bow_woahh - soulmates catradora au in which catra struggles with her feelings for a whole lot of words and adora is just a complete mess (affectionate). very fluffy, contains its own brand of emotions

up in our bedroom after the war and the infinite of sky by herothehardway - the first is a post-season 5 speculative fic written post-season 5 that focuses on catradora recovering from the impact of the war, specifically on adora’s trauma, and the second is a post-season 5 fic focused on catra being a soft wife and helping adora through a bad night <3 both also made me cry, which i’m discovering is a very dramatic thing to do 

i never cared for stories, until you entered mine by thethirdphiladelphiavireo - modern soulmates catradora au, very soft and containing pining catra. i have read this so many times and it makes me so emotional.

not if it’s you by luuma - single mother adora is just trying to raise her child and her neighbour (catra) insists on helping out. featuring adora’s gay awakening, huntara being an Old Gay, glimmer and bow being glimmer and bow (affectionate)

let adora wear pants by advancingambition - adora discovering her gender identity, featuring supportive trans butch catra. very fluffy, actually made me cry very hard <3

24 things about you by deepblueskies - modern au catradora living together, in which catra is oblivious and adora pines for a lot of words and struggles to communicate her feelings. also featuring fake dating, lonnie being excellent, and sheer fluff. <3

build our own higher ground  by iwouldgetaniguana - a pre-season 5 speculative fic on catra’s redemption arc, which gets pretty damn deep and looks into catra and adora repairing their relationship in a DOPE way
