technically i know that iruka didn't become a jounin bc he wanted to keep teaching in the academy but the evil, sadness-loving part of my brain keeps telling me its bc poor little orphan umino iruka slipped through the cracks and didn't have an adult to recommend him

ALSO no one thinks about iruka nearly enough and it drives me insane because in a story about revenge and hatred and children being orphaned and trained to kill or die, he is the one character that chooses to forgive and love and nurture and protect, over and over.

no one can convince me that kakashi didn't specifically go looking for iruka during pains attack on the village for a few different reasons but mainly because

kakashi knows iruka puts his life on the line constantly to protect/help others and has been witness to it at least twice before (the mission they went on together, the 3 kunoichi in the backhills, taking the fuma shuriken to the back for naruto, etc)

he knows naruto has just lost jiraiya-- i can guarantee you iruka dying was the first thing he thought about when the attack started. there's no way he was going to let that happen a second time.

he values iruka. like. inherently. and narratively. not just because of reasons 1 and 2, but because iruka represents (the will of fire, to us as viewers, but) the future/kind of village kakashi wants to see.

forever imagining kakashi making his way across the village, surrounded by chaos, sharingan ready and heart in his throat, praying to everything more powerful than him that he found him in time
