a free day off and she’s wandered over to get a dose of art her eyes crave. the sights of shifting colors, and various lines speckled across canvases and paraded in the hallways — it’s her form of healing. nursing a hangover is easy when all yeseul has is an empty heart, and an even emptier mind with nothing more than a few drops of caffeine to fill her woes. it’s distraction that pins her in front of a chun sungwoo painting, head tilted — eyes scouring over the details that make up the flecked smears of color over the dark painting. it feels like a good half-hour, no — maybe more that she stands observing the colors until a shadow of the body comes to shatter her concentration.

“are you a fan of chun sungwoo?” she asks, fingertips resting on chin as her other palm props up her elbow. yeseul’s never been one to strike up conversation, but today — she suspects it’s the effect of the painting that makes her more amicable to a stranger. “i’ve been standing here for quite some time, and i still haven’t come to the conclusion on how to feel about his pieces although i’ve started to realize i like his lighter pieces rather than darker pieces.” and it forces the question to layer itself in her mind the last time she’s picked up a paintbrush or even a set of colored pencils to sketch on napkins at cafe — art, another interest that’s pushed aside due to time.

iseul never has enough time. he’s always racing some kind of clock, whether it’s physical or metaphorical --- racing to get back to the practice room after lunch, racing to make time for his few friends in between hopeless days, racing to get to where everyone else his age is. always falling behind anyway. he knows that he shouldn’t be anywhere but in a practice room right now. he still has a couple of hours before he actually has to be, but that doesn’t change the nagging sense of obligation to pour everything he has into becoming better faster. maybe if he does, then he can somehow speed up time, speed up his debut... but, all things considered, he has to slow down every now and then just to maintain his sanity. most of the time, he finds himself in hushed galleries observing art that he can’t articulate and hoping against hope that he fits in.

it isn’t the art that draws him to a particular piece, but the woman standing in front of it. a few cautious glances tell iseul that she is, in fact, someone he’s seen a few times before. enough that it doesn’t just feel like coincidence anymore. but still, he won’t say that it’s her that made him approach. “a fan?.. huh. i guess you could say that,” he agrees passively as his arms come up to cross over his chest. “i like the lighter ones, too. but for me, i think i’m always drawn to lighter pieces regardless of the artist... they feel safer.” he shrugs, lets a few moments of silence pass, and the ends, “looking at a dark painting feels a lot like staring into someone’s misfortunes. i’m not sure why, but that’s how it’s always felt for me.”

as jiyeon started the conversation, she couldn’t help but want to backtrack immediately as she noticed that iseul seemed to be uncomfortable. maybe she came off a little strong, or maybe he just wasn’t interested in talking to her. either way, she felt bad for starting a conversation and assuming that he’d necessarily want to have one. honestly, she wouldn’t be surprised if it ended earlier than she expected.

“yeah, i imagine it’d be like that. i know i don’t really talk to many people in the company, but i find it more comfortable being able to recognize everyone. being thrown in a place with a bunch of unfamiliar people would throw me off so much.” while she didn’t always remember every trainee’s name, she was at least able to remember what they looked like. there were only a select few names that she remembered, and that were people that stuck out to her in some way. "but, yeah i haven’t.” she could understand what iseul was getting at. she’s heard the others mention visiting the other companies to see their friends, so jiyeon was probably just a unique outlier when i came to that. “i don’t really have that many friends close enough to visit their company, so yeah. i also don’t go places if i’m not needed there, if that makes sense at all?”

“it’s kind of like...” he began, gaze drawn to the ceiling in a moment of intense thought. it was like a lot of things, really, and none of them were all that pleasant. “... if you woke up one day, went to practice and your groupmates weren’t your groupmates. but they were acting like they were and you were the only one who felt out of place.” except it wasn’t like that at all. he had eaten in atlas records’ cafeteria and he had practiced in their rooms, but he’d stayed with people he already knew --- other summit media artists who had been displaced by the flood. he just had a tendency to overthink things. “i mean, it’s just weird. i’ll be glad to sleep in my own bed again.”

with a light shrug, he looked at jiyeon again. it was shocking to hear that she didn’t have many close friends; then again, she did seem a bit distant sometimes. he had always assumed that she was just tired when he saw her, though. “yeah, i get what you mean. it would be awkward if you went to a different company with no purpose... just loitering.” it wasn’t like she could blend in with the other people trying to sneak a peak of idols, either --- she wasn’t just some person, she was im jiyeon. she’d always stand out. “now that i’m thinking about it, i don’t think i’ve ever seen you anywhere but here. not including on a phone or television screen. and you said that you don’t go anywhere you’re not needed... i’m no detective, but i’m starting to think there’s some comic-book-superhero type stuff going on.”

what is your favorite article of clothing?

“i have a tie-dye t-shirt in really nice shades of green and blue. it says counselor on the back and it has a little black bonfire outline on the left chest. i can only assume that it’s from a summer camp --- i picked it up at a thrift store.”

If there was one clothing brand you could work with, who would it be and why?

“maybe charm’s? there’s no particular reason. i’m not that big on fashion, so it would be difficult for me to come up with anything that... makes sense. i just think it’s a nice brand.”

what’s your favorite seasonal activity?

“skiing. i’ve only gone a few times, so i’m still pretty terrible at it... but that makes it more fun. i’m excited to go again this winter, if i can.”

how well do you deal with crowds and attention on you?

“i don’t mind it if i’m performing. i’m typically a very nervous person, but something about performing takes that away, even if it is only for a short while. but say that i’m just trying to go shopping... i’d much rather avoid crowds and any unnecessary attention. there’s a difference between eden and hyun iseul --- eden could remain calm while being watched by the whole world. hyun iseul can hardly handle being looked at for more than a few seconds.”

If you could spend an afternoon with your fandom/your artist’s fandom, would you want to? If so, what would you do together?

“well, first of all, i’m not so sure that pristine even has a fandom. but if we do, then it depends: if i had to do it by myself, i wouldn’t want to. i’m... honestly quite nervous with strangers, and i wouldn’t want them to get a bad impression of me. but if the other member could join me, then i think it would be nice. assuming that we have a fanbase, i can’t imagine it being very large, so maybe we could go do something relaxing. maybe make candles together or something? we could all learn something new and bond. that’d be fun, i think.”

What is one thing you never leave the house without?

“i have a whole tote bag of things that i carry with me everywhere i go, honestly... doesn’t matter if i’m going to practice, to a convenience store, shopping, whatever. i always have my phone, earbuds & charger; i always have at least one pen, but usually more & a notebook or journal; paper for origami if i’m stuck somewhere and get bored; my wallet; my glasses, contacts, contacts case; cologne; at least one book. i think that there’s more, but that’s all i can remember without digging through my bag. i’m... prepared for any situation, i guess.”

If you could splurge on one new piece of clothing, what would it be and why?

“a nice winter coat. as much as i love winter, i get cold rather easily and i don’t really have any thick, warm clothes  ---  i’ve been relying on the same four or five hoodies to keep me warm since i was a teenager. i like nohant and gloverall’s coats, but they’re all way, way out of my budget.”

What’s your favorite season?

"winter and spring. i think the cold, muted colors of winter are simply beautiful  ---  there’s nothing that i love more than the sight of freshly fallen snow. i think it makes everything look delicate, untouchable... pristine, even. somehow, winter makes the world seem so much softer than it is. but spring... spring is good, too. watching the brighter colors return to everything all at once, seeing flowers pop up in unexpected places... i think winter is a place of quiet acceptance whereas spring is the time when hope is reborn, if you get what i mean. i feel too deeply attached to both seasons to choose one or the other.”

If you donated to a charity, which would you choose and why?

“the agit outreach program. there are a lot of teenagers who have dropped out of school and are already living on the streets. a lot of them are kids who ran away from bad situations, but being homeless isn’t good, either --- although i’ve never been through something that bad, i know what it’s like to be just a kid and already feel hopeless. the organization is... well, it’s like a team of people who go out and find these kids and try to offer them hope for their future, try to help them get back on their feet. i guess you could say that the organization hits close to home for me, so that’s why i would want to donate.”

What’s the next step in your career, solo or otherwise?

“currently, the next step is to debut, isn’t it? it’s hard to do anything else when i’m still a trainee. especially since summit didn’t show our faces for so long... not that it’s the company’s fault... actually, i know that there are things that i could do as a trainee to get attention for pristine, but since i’m still so unknown, would it be worth it? could i do it? i really don’t know. but i might start looking into stuff like that.”

iseul walked to a silent cadence in his head, eyes drawn not to his own steps, but to dan’s. this was hardly an appropriate time to be in his close-observation-and-mimicry mindset, but then again, was there an appropriate time for such a thing? besides, once he got started, it wasn’t easy to stop. so he kept watching and he tried his best to follow along, even trying to shadow dan’s stance; but what looked cool to him became awkward and stiff when he tried to do it. not that he was aware of it, though; for once, he was too focused to care about how he looked.

a particularly loud squeak of his sneaker against the linoleum brought him back down to reality and reminded him of where he was:  not in a never-ending hallway, but on the way to the cafeteria. iseul still felt a little guilty for asking dan to accompany him just so he could pick up a couple cold bottles of water, but he was too nervous to go by himself & he was getting really, really sick of the room-temperature water stashed by his bed. “is it usually crowded?” he asked, trying to sound casual, but the ever-present uneasiness was still more obvious than he would like. “d’you think people will think it’s weird if i just get some water and leave?” he looked downwards again to see if their steps were still in time, but he wasn’t surprised to see that they weren’t. after all, he and dan were different people.

there might’ve been a lot of misconceptions about jiyeon’s personality floating throughout summit media, but most of them were falsely assumed. the most common one was that she was constantly in a bad mood. to her, there wasn’t a need to keep a smile plastered on her face at all times, especially if there wasn’t a camera around. combining that with the fact that she wasn’t sociable didn’t help her case. jiyeon typically observed other people rather than talking to them. iseul happened to be someone she had observed from afar a couple of times. she didn’t know how much he’s heard about her, but she figured he was someone she could strike a quick conversation with. 

“how’s atlas? i’m sure it sucks to have to be relocated.” while jiyeon herself affected by the pipes bursting, she still had to endure stepping foot on jeju island again. she couldn’t imagine coming back from jeju to find out she had to sleep at another company. well, actually she could since she had experienced something similar, but that was something she’d like to erase from existence. “there’d be so many people i’m not used to seeing, so i think i’d be uncomfortable there. at the same time. a part of me wants to know what the inside of their building looks like. i think i might visit one day.”

although iseul was on his fourth year at summit media, he couldn’t remember ever having a conversation with jiyeon — not even at company dinners. it wasn’t that shocking, though; iota had already debuted by the time iseul signed as a trainee and he wasn’t usually the type to go out of his way to speak to anyone. evidently, neither was she. so when he noticed her approaching, he felt his heart sink with the anticipation of bad news ready to be delivered. he couldn’t see any other reason why she’d suddenly want to talk.

but the bad news didn’t come. “um...” he voiced awkwardly, taking longer than he should to process her words. he never had been good at speaking; especially not to people he didn’t really know. “you know, it’s— it’s actually not that different from summit.” obviously, it was. it was a completely different place, a completely different atmosphere; had he not been so perturbed by the situation that had shoved him towards atlas, then he’d probably prefer it. “but there are a lot of unfamiliar people. it’s like walking on eggshells as to not disturb the balance of... everything.” he shrugged, eyes searching the area around him for the easiest escape route. as always. “but... you’ve really never been there? i assumed that... well, i guess i thought that idols... i don’t know what i thought.”
