bbc ghosts’ mike is the ultimate wife guy. accepts that his wife can see ghosts almost immediately and doesn’t really gaf. his wife makes him stop tasks or take the long way around otherwise simple things because of the ghosts that he can’t see and cannot tell are there and he’s chill. quits his job in a day because he had a nice phone call. his wife has to do a ghost funeral during an important event for their shared business and he pulls it off anyway. owns a bear. cool guy

one thing I love about Ghosts is it will just drop some insane lore out of nowhere and never mention it again. what do you mean the ghosts still use the bathroom occasionally. what do you mean robin and mary hooked up.

one of my favorite things about the captain is that he's like... objectively not cut out for the army at all.

like, he barely had his shit together on the home front before germany had even touched england. he wouldn't have lasted thirty seconds on the actual front lines without having a panic attack. he accidentally killed a bird once and still feels guilty about it almost 80 years later.

he died a captain at 44 or 45, and had been a captain for at least five years prior. a competent army officer could expect promotion from captain to major by like 35 at the latest. he is plain old bad at his job.

like, it's only that he's overcompensating for his gayness with a performatively masculine job, and he's autistic with a special interest in military stuff. in modern day he'd be sitting at home with a nice husband writing very infodumpy nonfiction books about tanks. dude was seriously just born in the wrong generation.

I had a virtual ticket for the Ghosts Q and A event, here’s some fun things I learned:

If Pat had a tattoo, it would be a dolphin on his ankle surrounded by stars

If Robin had a tattoo, it would be a bum on his bum

The original pilot for Ghosts contained many other characters and truly horrendous costumes

Robin’s original chess partner was a permanently drunk monk

There was going to be these two ghost characters who were a husband and wife who hated each other to the point that the husband killed his wife and then instantly fell down the stairs so he was stuck with his wife for eternity

Mary was initially eternally emitting smoke, which was a problem because it was a practical effect which involved piping smoke from under her skirt (from what I could gather)

Martha Howe-Douglas has never seen Star Wars

The team who made Ghosts initially considered making a show set in space instead because they weren’t sure how to do the ghost plot - Martha would’ve been a cyborg (she doesn’t know what a cyborg is)

Laurence Rickard (Robin and Humphrey) once encountered a little Northern Pat trick or treater during Halloween who had no clue who he was and didn’t intentionally come to his house

Laurence Rickard has a model of his severed head just on his person (presumably at all times)

There was initially going to be a ghost called Ancient William, who was one of the oldest and wisest of the ghosts, a soothsayer type character like Yoda, except he was only six years old

I just had an upsetting thought - what if Alison constantly visited the Ghosts and knew - when she was old and grey and had lived a life - that she was going to die, so she made sure she was in Button House for it?

Mike accepts it and understands her want to go back to the Ghosts, they’re like family, they’re always there.

But then it’s Mike’s turn to go and he decides it must happen at Button House too. He’ll see his wife again! Spend a couple of hundred years together & hey he can actually meet/talk to the ghosts now!

Only when he dies and he meets all the Ghosts, who are all excited to actually talk to him etc, he asks where Alison is, only to find that she moved on straight away.

He finally gets to see a part of his life that was so bizarre for him, so secret and hidden, part of his life where he only ever had half a story. And now he has that half but his whole world is still gone and he doesn’t know when he’ll ever see her again.

The Animorphs books begin with a tale of Evil Yeerks invading Earth and the Andalites the distant heroes who can come save everyone if our young heroes last long enough for them to arrive.

And it keeps that facade intact for our young heroes for, oh, about five and a half books.

Then Jake, after boiling a hundred Yeerks in a Jacuzzi without a second thought, watches Temrash 114 die slowly and painfully while controlling his own body. Even knowing Temrash will doom Earth if he escapes, even knowing that Temrash has broken his own brother into a shadow of himself, Jake feels real sorrow.

Then Ax calls his people for help and is given the blame for his brother's crimes because the Andalites can't tarnish a hero's reputation in the middle of their long-running war.

Now here's Eslin Three-Five-Nine. Not an "ally" by any stretch, but he hates Visser Three more than he hates the Andalites. Because Visser Three lied to him. Because he lost Derane Three-Four-Four.

It's just the beginning. Just the cracks.

early seasons frankmargaret is unfortunately kind of peak. local army brat and her boytoy who nobody but her wants. they're generational haters at points and simultaneously out-freak the whole camp, which is a feat and a half with "big john" trapper still stomping around. half of the jokes about their relationship are about feet, but it's frank's feet getting manicured and painted instead of hers. he's married and keeps mentioning his wife in front of her. she hasn't killed him yet but she's reaching the end of her rope about it. he's so completely devoted to her. she can't decide whether she loves or hates him. he wills her his clothes when deathly ill. she gets married in tokyo to some guy and he crashes out in such a way it gets him that section eight the cross-dressing corpsman has been gunning for for 2+ years.
