As I reflect upon this past semester... this past year, I think about just how different yet the same things appear to be. 1 year ago, the world watched the riots and protests in several cities as a result of the senseless murder of George Floyd. 1 year ago, the desperation of standing up for something I believed in outweighed my fears of contracting this novelty virus known as "COVID-19". 1 year ago, I wasn't sure what the fate of the world would be... Are things ever going to go back to the same? Will this be just another police shooting that comes and goes? 1 year ago, I wasn't even sure the future of my education.
Beside the obvious implications in this picture, this represents a time that presented so much uncertainty in my life. Would there by justice for (all of) those who have lost their life? Would I be another number in the death toll for those who have contracted COVID-19? Will (I) ever go back to being the same?
The answer is no... While 2020 is what most people consider the worst year of their life, I reflect upon 2020 and think of it as the best year of my life as it presented so much difficulty... the kind of difficulty that is necessary of true growth. Growth that I have experienced on a personal, professional, conscious and social level. Growth, that had it not have been for the "stopping of time" that 2020 brought, would have never experienced. So I post this picture as my final project as it is in a sense, a performative representation (in time) of my growth as Jainee.

I would like to say first that it's really nice to see that despite your discomfort, you still went ahead and shared this with us. I really enjoyed how even while taking the focus off of you, you are still the focus of the video. The ambient noise of the television and the mood lighting really make this work. Great job
Art Project #4: One Minute Performance
The idea for this project came to me sporadically. I had just ordered $50 worth of takeout food for myself and on my drive home I envisioned a low lit room with faint tv noises and the emphasis of food. When I began recording it felt right to indulge, so I did. I enjoy this video and it makes me slightly uncomfortable

This was one of my favorite performances! I commend you on your bravery for putting out such a personal performance and statement. Particularly, the part where you mentioned the use of color- which I think was an awesome choice both literally and figuratively.
Really nice work and all the best on the next steps of your journey.

My piece is a video performance as I come home for the day and that process. In the beginning I am wearing all black and dressed head to toe, by the end I am in a tank top and shorts. I was motivated by my own personal growth. I have been struggling a lot with mental health and how I feel as though I’m putting on a front for the world around me, so I decided to show me finally being comfortable in my own skin, no longer hiding from the world as much as possible. My process began with trying on a lot of clothes and then I sort of realized how the color of my clothing could affect the piece. So, I am emerging from my hardened steely black exterior to become a new person even if there’s many steps along the way.

One Minute Performance | 𝟹 𝙿𝙼 𝚂𝙺𝙴𝚃𝙲𝙷
I was having a very hard time coming up with a good idea for this project—luckily I had my roommate and boyfriend around to help me brainstorm. Ultimately, I decided on trying my hand in making a short comedy sketch featuring myself, my roommate and my cat! I had a lot of fun making this and felt more comfortable than I thought I would. I normally hate acting, hearing my own voice, and being on camera...but I was actually okay with getting it done! I think my want to make something enjoyable outweighed my camera-shyness. The editing was also fun to do! None of the original audio is included—it was all added in post! I really hope the short is readable and maybe a little goofy, that was the vibe I was going for when I made it. Overall I had a lot of fun with this project, it brought me out of comfort zone but in a good way! I’m excited to possibly do performance art in the future.

This such an amazing idea and concept. It's so funny/sad how society tends to make fun of or judge anyone who is on a path of self improvement.
I really like that you used a black and white filter over the video. It gives it a feel of "silencing" the "picture" that people will paint about you. Great job!
“PosiBodyTivity”
Artist Statement:
For this performance piece I wanted to demonstrate the correlation between body image and the way others perceive you. Many people become discouraged from exercise because they are anxious over the way they think they look. People will want to paint a portrait of who you are when you’re just trying to improve yourself. If i had the space and resources i would have liked to smear myself over a large surface area; ie. white wall or large canvas. Never did anything like this before.

Thank you for sharing! This really hits home with me as I personally deal with a lot of anxiety around the concept of time but particularly how much of it I waste.
I really like the ticking clock sound FX that you included, which really help stress the concept you are trying to convey!
Artist Statement 4
I wanted to convey the reality of time and how much it means to us all while at the same time putting an aspect of somewhat fear or concern how much we have left. It comes and go very quickly and I don’t think people stop to think how much time they have left to live especially at this age. Most people will call off anything just to do the next time when in reality it’s a tomorrow you problem and that’s when it hurts you the most. Those of us who are aware and try to keep track, try to do our best to spread around enough time throughout our day to do multiple things whether it’s with friends or family or something personal for yourself as you come to honk it’s earned. Whatever it may be, time is a gift that given to us at the responsibility of how we choose to use it when it means the most.

I really enjoyed this performance as well as your artist statement. I can only imagine how it feels to be a model and to be on constant display. I really like the fact that you chose to be a doll as it's the perfect embodiment of being an object on display.

Performance #00
A man recently moved into my neighborhood.
When I say moved in, I mean parked his car on the said of my apartment building, and called it home.
Everyday I look outside of my window and see this man, with his dog, living.
I wonder what it feels like to be homeless?
Now this man has his car to call home, but what about those who live on the street?
Days like today when it's cold, windy, and snowy, what goes through one's mind?
This is what inspired me to make this performance. To shed myself of everything and stand outside, naked, for one minute.
All I could think of were my feet, so cold they began to burn and that I better have a least a minute of footage. Ironically, never once did I worry if someone would see me.
While I had an ending in site, most people hope to make it through the night.
The next time I walk past this man, I'll be sure to say hello.

Performance Art Reading Response #2
I’ll first say that I enjoyed the reading, despite it being uncomfortable to read in many instances.
However, while I can try and understand the intention behind the cage performance, overall this wouldn’t be something that I would enjoy looking at anywhere- museum or otherwise. Just as the article mentioned the appropriation of culture, I found this to be appropriating a hurtful past that many people share and can relate to.
The article mentioned that many spectators looked uncomfortable and even expressed their guilt, but I was surprised by the reaction of white spectators outside fo the US who reacted with stereotypical “jungle noises”. It was not surprising the reactions from people of color the article mentioned from spectators both inside and outside the US.
Overall, I recognize the power of performance art and ultimately recognize both the intention of the artist and the message the reading was trying to convey.

Performance Art Reading Response #1
One thing that I found interesting, but also found myself questioning from this reading was the way that the article seemed to separate (performance) art from other forms of performance, like dancing and acting. I have also been under the impression that such forms of expression are in fact performance art, so it was interesting the perspective that this article took, which again, I find myself questioning.
Additionally, I was not aware that many artist that are known for their traditional forms of art, such a Leonardo Da Vinci, started out or at some point in their career, dabbled in many forms of performance art, so that was a nice thing to learn.
Overall, I enjoyed this reading and look forward to performance art being able to be better recorded as well as defined in the future.

Art Project 3: One Minute Supercut
Beyonce the GOAT
With the conclusion of Women’s History month, I dreamed it necessary to dedicate this super cut to Beyoncé Knowles Carter, who made history this past February as the most Grammy winning female in history.
Beyonce has made in appearance in several of my projects this semester so it is no surprise that I am a stan.
I wanted to dedicate this to Beyonce for more reasons that me just being a fan, however. In order to make history and accomplish all that she has during her 20+ year, requires a work ethic that most do not posses.
Furthermore, Beyonce has transformed into more than just a recording artist. She is a philanthropist, activist, and feminist. She is also a pillar in the Black community for more reasons than I can explain.
She is a class act and deserves to go down in history.
