I’m a junior in high school and my brother is in the navy. He of all people has reason to fear for his life but yesterday he texted me asking about the safety measures in my school. He asked if the cop who’s been permanently stationed at our door since sandy hook has a gun, if the students know how to open the windows, if the locks work on all the doors. I’m 16. I almost have my license, I’m going to college soon, but I’m still a kid and I shouldn’t have to fear for my life every time I step into a classroom. I love my school and I love my country but I don’t love the false rhetoric that seeks to blame instead of addressing the issues. I’m 16 and your words just made me cry. Bc it’s true, above all else we need to be there for each other and I think that’s something everyone could stand to remember right now. So thank you n

A teacher’s perspective

I don’t post a lot of serious things, but I thought I would share about the discussion I had with my students this morning about lockdown drill procedures because it’s that time again. 

This is something I do on occasion when I feel it’s been a while since we’ve discussed it or when a student brings it up, but today we took the time to really discuss it, answer any questions, and practice a drill. 

I go through all my usual things: Lights off and door locked. Get into a classroom as fast as you can if you’re outside. If you can’t get into a room, run to safe places x, y, and z. Etc. Etc. 

I always tell them that, as scared as I am thinking about it, I’m not allowed to open the door for them if they knock and try to get in. That’s the policy. So I tell them to run if they can’t get in a room. 

I tell them that, in the event of a real lockdown, once we’ve locked down, I would be at the door with the fire extinguisher, ready if someone gets into our room. I let them laugh at the thought of that to lighten the mood a little. 

Then I always let them ask questions. They’re 8th graders, so sometimes they really skirt the line of being serious when we’re supposed to be and making a joke out of things that are supposed to be serious, but they did a good job today. 

They asked me what to do if they can’t get to one of our safe places in town and I told them I don’t care where they go. Just run as fast and far as you can and get anywhere safe. Tell someone there what’s happening. I don’t care where you go as long as you’re safe. 

They asked me what happens if someone gets into our room and I remind them it’s my job to keep them as safe as possible and I would do whatever I can to make sure that happens. I’ll protect you. 

The last thing they asked me (and I ended it on this note to really drive the point home) was what to do if something happened to me. So I told them, “That’s when you protect each other and take care of each other. I know right now you’re probably thinking, ‘But I don’t like some of these kids. They’re not all my friends.’ But trust me. If something really bad was happening, you would all be friends.” And they all nodded their little (8th grader sized) heads and I teared up just seeing that. 

Because sometimes my job sucks and I have to remember WHY I do it. I don’t do it to teach them how to add fractions or graph equations. I literally could not care less if they learn any of these things. I do it because today I got to impress upon them that we all come together and care for each other when bad things happen.

I’ve got this next week off from work and I’m looking to really rest and recharge because the last two weeks have been pretty rough, but it feels good going into this little vacation which such a hopeful image of my kids nodding their heads together this morning.

Was this the CT stop? Bc I was there last night and had almost the same thing happen w/ Logan and Sydney, but I ended up meeting them at the busses and all my dreams came true (I’m going to post the whole story later it’s all kinda insane)

so here’s the story…

(disclaimer: i just want to share this story because some people were wondering and because i wanted you all to know how much of an angel she actually is. in NO WAY am i bragging)

i have a koine fanpage on instagram (@/_teamkoko) and she follows me, and with that, all season long we’ve been messaging back and forth. it was always just simple “good luck” messages. once i told her that i was going to see them all on tour, she got so excited and promised me that i’ll get to meet her one day.

i told her that m&g tickets were too much, so that was already out of the question, and she told me that there’s a 100% chance that i’ll be able to meet her if i wait outside by the tour bus. i was so excited!! buuut, when the show was over, that’s where things started not going as planned…

when the show was over, she dmed me that they actually weren’t going back to the tour bus, but they were staying overnight at the hotel (the show was at a resort) and she didn’t know what could be done. but both her and me still had high hopes.

so, from there, after the show, my parents took my sister and me to ben and jerry’s to get ice cream, but i was still messaging koine to see if there was a chance we could meet up. theeen, she told me that she’d be able to meet me at ben and jerry’s after everything was settled. my family and i waited for maybe a good hour, but she made it and it was great.

when i saw her and kiki running up to us (yup, kiko confirmed lol) i was legit jumping up and down. when they came over, i thought it would be awkward and i wouldn’t exactly know what to say, but it was so easy to talk to them and they’re the most genuine people i’ve seen. after a couple minutes of talking to me and my family, some other fans came over asking for pictures and it was adorable how sweet and welcoming they were. i gave her maybe 4 (?) hugs (lol) but i was speechless. she went out of her way to make this happen, and i will forever love her for that.
