I like that this video has a bit of story/narrative to it. good imagery, well done

Artist Statement:
I had a lot of fun with this one. I tinkered with After Effects for the first time to make my son vanish and become. I wish this class could go on forever! I have had so much fun getting back into digital art. I have done more in this semester than I have in almost 10 years. I have retaught myself Photoshop, and did a fresh start on Premiere  and After Effects. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do! Can’t wait to show my son tomorrow. It has been a pleasure seeing everyone’s hard work. I hope that you continue posting your art on tumblr so I can see more of all your amazing artwork. Great Job everyone and have a great summer!

Project 5 Vanishing and Becoming
Artist Statement:
In this video I used methods of travel from car to bike as well as eyes from animal to human and father to daughter.  As a father I’ve become more aware of time passing and the idea of passing on knowledge and experience, I see parts of myself dissolving as my focus in life moves from myself onto my daughter.  The tunnel used in the video was used as an element to describe transition or transformation.  The movement via bike and car are just used to embellish the idea of the passage of time.
I used this video to experiment as I am relatively new to shooting video and wanted to see what kind of effects I could make use of that might improve the overall video.  Since I am not a musician but I did not want to sample existing music I used slowed down ambient audio captured from a park near my house.  I hope the video organization flows together.  Any notes positive or negative are welcome.

I really liked the effects you used in this video. Very cohesive. I really liked the overlay effect and mirroring effect.... Kind of wish I had used some of those in my own video
Vanishing & Becoming/Video
vimeo
I seem to struggle with size issues in Premiere ;)
When I think of vanishing and becoming, I realize those are two words which truly define myself through life.  I have felt myself vanish and, more recently, I have felt myself become…constant transitions in a state of movement.
This project was somewhat inspired by my performance piece, or the idea of walking and moving through life while simultaneously feeling and absorbing environments around me.  As I started this class with the ideas of living in two worlds of the past and the present, I end this class still treading within these two dimensions.  I live in the mountains with my child, in a strange state of reality with his father, yet I head to the city for the conscious decision of slowly transitioning onto a different path in a new life.  My way of life as I have known it is vanishing.  I get to become what I have wanted…but yet both will always be inside.

Project 5 : Vanishing and Becoming
I tried to have fun with this one, and fortunately I was able to use some great equipment to capture it. When the video editing was all done is when I chose the song, which had been playing at a bar just that night. I suppose you can say there is a few elements to the piece vanishing and becoming, i.e. the smoke, and the character himself which are the two I focused on. I really enjoyed the lighting, which was all natural and the color came out pretty great too. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

Video from: Under The Skin(2013) by Jonathan Glazer Music: 'Forgive' (2006) by Burial
This movie is very visually captivating and I thought would be great to use for this project.  I thought that the music selected was a good fit to match the mood of the video

Reading Response - Projection: Vanishing and Becoming
This reading really seemed to be a blend of philosophy and it's relationship with art as well as a kind of history of projection in art. It discusses the idea that projection of light on a wall may be the first art form where as drawing may have started as a method to capture the projection. It discusses some of the futility in art as a way to capture a subject since time is constantly moving on and a moment cannot ever truly be saved. It discusses the rise of video and advances in that space as a way to get closer to facsimile of a true moment in time or experience. The reading seemed to wind through quite a few topics so it's hard to boil down to a main takeaway, I came away thinking that the writer was unsure but hopeful for the future of video/projection in art thinking that we may be moving toward a better approximation of shared presence/experience as opposed to a more defined separation/absence in art.

Reading #5 CH.6 time and motion
This chapter discusses the many ways time and motion are utilized by artists. Actual time as discussed in the chapter may include a constraint on the artist to complete something or end something within the artists specified constraint or timeframe like the frozen skates. Implied time may be used to indicate the passage of time as in the use of storyboards or visually implying the passage of time in video like sped up aging. Recorded time are true snapshots in time possibly collected like a storyboard to show the true passage of time or time lapse may be used or slowly moving and speeding up the video can create a kind of normal speed time lapse hybrid. There is also the element of motion such as kinetic art that actually moves. Implied movement can be used to move a viewers eyes around an image or visual illusions like using line work in certain patterns and colors can give illusion of movement. Reading through this chapter I realized how often I see many of these artistic elements used regularly in TV and commercials. Many of these techniques have become so common it's easy to overlook the artistry and history behind them. I think my favorite example from the reading was 'Fashionably Late for the Relationship'

Module #4 The Artist is Present (Part 2)
My performance piece I will stay, I will go was inspired by John Cage and his exploration of chance. I was additionally inspired by a game I played as a child with flower petals, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not in which one decided the fate of one’s love life by pulling off petals of a flower. In this piece I took a question I have ruminated on for much time and decided to leave it to fate and chance by posing the question to the flower, rather than trying to answer the question with logic. With each petal I torn off I alternated saying I will stay with I will go. The final petal was to decide my fate!

MODULE 4/PERFORMANCE ART
Nature has always been influential in my life.  Growing up in New England, I spent half of my childhood exploring the farm fields and  thick woods of Connecticut and Vermont.  Often I wandered the woods with my father in search of deer to feed our family over the winter.  My legs were my vehicle.  I learned to walk quietly, parallel with the twigs, not to make any breaking noise.
Living in the mountains, I am always surrounded by quiet spaces.  Almost every morning, I take my two german shepherd for long walk through sagebrush and boulders, up through the evergreens and aspens.  Spring time brings pungent smells of a moist earth.  As the snow melts into the ground, the dirt is rich and the moss is reborn.  My performance is of my feet feeling the textures of earth and rock.  The connection between this earth is undeniable for me.  If I was bold, I would be nude rolling around on the earth :)
I actually have become more interested in performance art since this project began.  Sometimes I believe I have yet to find my medium and find it imperative I must examine this vehicle as means of expressing what lies inside.

Project 4
The Artist is Present
Artist Statement:
As a rule I’m a very private person and not an exhibitionist at all, I thought I would incorporate my personality into this piece by obscuring so you can never see my full face.   Additionally I think that most interactions between people, there is obviously the verbal communication one has with another but I believe a lot of the humanizing component and direct connection to other people is in the eyes.  By obscuring my eyes from view I liked the idea of throwing off the direct connection, maybe add a slight amount of tension.  I also am drawn to images where the eyes are blacked out or covered, not sure why that is but it adds mystery I suppose.

I really like this series. Very well edited scenes
Project 3/The Loop
When I was young, I was fortunate to have family who introduced me to the genre of classic films.  I often spent many days with my sister watching movies such as High Society or Singing in the Rain.  However, we also watched old, horror movies with my father.  My father worked quite a bit, and I loved the few moments we spent together on the weekends when scary stories or old movies were shared with popcorn and soda.
This project was a journey back to my childhood and was inspired by the poor, flashing GIF I made from The Shining.  I am a lover of suspense, and the dramatics of film noir.  Each frame is a lesson in the contrast of light and dark.  I feel as if I have suspended time in each GIF, treading gently in the memory of my youth.
