there was profound admiration for the older member rooted deep within the leader of the four boy group. cemented on his skin in the shape of a single symbolic stick figure out of a set of four that rested atop of his ribs, as alive and prominent as ever during the new era that rose for legion as a whole. 

ki.p’s era.

it forced a relatively big switch in perspective — hearing the voice of one of his members through the screen of the television rather than standing in front of the camera beside jiyong proved to be a culture shock the first time sangwook experienced it. a pleasant one, nevertheless, the leader’s pride swelling at the idea of the remaining legion members grasping onto opportunities to come into their own within the industry. meanwhile, fingertips tingled in an undying need to entertain each chance, whether it would be leaving his phone looping music through the night, posting about individual efforts on sns or simply showing up with cake at hand.

as a leader, as a member, as a friend and maybe even as a younger brother, moonsan wanted to be there.

“it takes all the might i have in me not to somehow aim this at your face,“ a mischievous laugh followed, small joyful wrinkles forming along crescent eyes. no more but an empty promise, as moonsan immediately moved to set the confectionery masterpiece down on the closest surface available. which just happened to be a bench, beating the table by at least three meters. “but i love and respect you, so i’m not gonna do it today. practice is probably sticky as it is.”

cake was common ground for many celebrations, moonsan making it his duty to share a piece with everyone around before approaching jiyong with a small piece on a paper plate. “here,” the offer extended along with his hand. “you don’t have to eat it if you don’t want it. this is more symbolic anyway, you know how i get with these things.” tone matched a light sparkle dancing in the glossy gaze, suggesting no offence in the case of jiyong refusing the sweet. the leader always held a tendency of entertaining traditions, ones accepted by the general public or made up by legion alike. perhaps he was a little more emotionally available that he’d ever considered. 

“we should do something fun to celebrate, though.” we? well, sangwook. jiyong. legion. it fit no matter which way one looked at it. “of course, not right now, we can wait until the schedule clears. i’ll gladly sponsor any crazy wish you might have.” it’s a promise the younger well-intended to keep, evident by the press of his hand against his chest. forgotten for the hour once the limb fell back into place and the jolly expression was replaced by wide-eyed wonder. “so how does it feel? is it weird?” it left his mouth before moonsan could grasp the leader vs. youngest switch in his head, leading function in hibernation for the singular moment in time.

The faux threat pulled a smile across the rapper’s face, lips parting to allow a soft laugh to emanate as the others around them began to chat and offer their congratulations in a more personal form. Some shook his hand, others brief hugs, and a few simply bowed and smiled when greeted. As the leader finished his slight quip, the rapper’s smirk cracked into a grin, pretending to tip Moonsan’s head towards the cake with a gentle tap.

With the cake cut and handed out, Jiyong watched everyone enjoy the dessert, which certainly filled his heart more than anything else in the moment. Perhaps it was a bit unfair for him to think, but it was almost as if he were gifting them something back for their coming together for a congratulations. He certainly hadn’t been the one to make or purchase the cake, but sharing it with them was the best he could do in that regard. Taking the plate from Moonsan, he smiled softly.

“I’ll have some,” he reassured the leader, nodding a few times before taking a bite of the cake. The corners of his mouth curled into a smile then, a nod rocking his head. As the leader began to ask a few more questions, the rapper took a few more bites, brow furrowing as he sought to think of the correct responses, what was truly brewing in his chest. “It definitely feels like a long-time coming.”

A pause, a gentle reminder that he was one of the lucky ones, one of the few who would truly have this opportunity. He dipped his head a bit, shrugging.

“I mean, I’ve just dreamed about it and it finally came true, you know? It could have been anyone in my place right now but I’m glad it’s me.”

maybe, just maybe it was a little too extra of moonsan to cut everyone’s concentration short in midst of practice, loud voice filling up the space as he entered it back first. “jiyong hyung, you better have your eyes closed!” as if it was not obvious enough what exactly the youngest was doing amidst his obvious ever-present admiration for the rapper and all the spazzing he didn’t even bother to hide in the legion group chat. “i’m serious!” flashing a sharp look from over his shoulder, his side hit the wall to turn the lights off. if ki.p’s solo debut wasn’t a hot topic within the company, one would think that legion’s leader got his member’s birthday very wrong from the size of the cake in his hands (in san’s defense, information about the solo and a further congratulation did not fit on a small cake easily).

moonsan tip-toed his way towards jiyong, sneakers dragging across the floor making a small squeaking noise to inform of the nearing presence. balancing the cake on one hand, eyes scanned the room to raise his hand and gesture a countdown to the few dancers and staffs that were around. a song akin to happy birthday, slightly amended to fit the occasion, rang loud and proud with legion’s leader leading, eyes holding a satisfactory sparkle while watching jiyong from above the few lit candles on the cake. “you have to make a wish now. and i will not accept any wish other than many more solos to come.” a catfish grin curled the side of his lip upwards, eyes drifting from the older to the candles in an encouraging manner.

“Solo” had always been a part of his vocabulary. Solo fighting, solo standing, solo surviving and struggling. A four letter word used to bolster each of his limbs, a push and shove that drove him forward like a rushing wind and coursing stream.

Head up, chest out, chin raised to the heavens

Yet dark eyes looked downward, drifting and sifting through the sands of time and well-wishes from friends and fans, both of which filled the empty sort of feeling his chest, the place where a heart was to lie but had been swept away by wearing worries and uncertainty that crept underneath well-kept skin laced in ink.

“Solo” meant alone, to continue on as a separated individual, but even he — Ki.P of Legion, Ki.P the rapper, Ki.P the soloist — knew that “solo” would never be just that. Just like each letter of the word, there was a member of Legion there to support him, to push him forward.

Four for four.

Sitting on the floor of the room had turned into a quick stand at the leader’s request, eyes closed as he rose, clapping a hand over his eyes once truly on his feet. What was to come, he wasn’t too sure, but there was a soft hum in the room, the slight smell of something burning that reminded him of candles in autumn and winter. The smoke reminded him of struggling, of push-back and persistence, yet a sense of calm rushed through his veins this time. This time there was no need to worry.

The exclamation — despite expected — caused the rapper to jump in slight, a mild look of bewilderment across his face as his hand dropped to his side and dark eyes glanced at all of the faces in the room. Familiar faces, especially the one that stood at the forefront, grin in place as a cake displayed congratulations and candles.

As the leader requested a specific wish, the young man saw there no reason not to oblige, bringing the wish to fruition before blowing out the candles. With the smoke gently rising, a smile crept across his face, despite how his lips fought to prevent it from spreading. The empty space in his chest now swelled with pride.

Yet words were hard to come by.

“If your wish was to give me a heart attack you almost succeeded,” Jiyong joked, smiling and offering a bow of thanks to those who had gathered. Eyeing the cake, the rapper glanced at Moonsan. “Shall we cut that up for everyone?”

Cake had never really been his thing, often preferring fruit over other sweets, and he most certainly didn’t want to the dessert to go to waste. As for himself? Well, he’d have a bite just to show his thanks.

“Please, I would love to share it with all of you.”

What’s the next step in your career, solo or otherwise?

I have my eyes set on some more music releases, as well as maybe some hosting gigs. I’d also like to make some charitable donations to charities and organizations that mean a lot to me. There’s a lot on my plate, but I’m excited.

If you donated to a charity, which would you choose and why?

In honor of my brother I’d donate to Korea Kidney Cancer Association. It’s time we get rid of cancer.

If you could spend an afternoon with your fandom/your artist’s fandom, would you want to? If so, what would you do together?

I enjoy spending time with large groups of them but from a distance. It’s a lot easier to see everyone and feel less pressured. Honestly just seeing Unit at fan meetings and concerts a lot of fun. Can you tell I’m itching for a comeback?

How well do you deal with crowds and attention on you?

I deal pretty well with crowds, even when they get a little too close. I don’t mind having attention on me, but I also don’t like to constantly be in the spotlight. It’s nice to have time to myself and not in the public eye.

What is your favorite article of clothing?

I have this gray trench coat I’ve had for so many years that it’s a staple in my winter closet. I’ve even see Units jokingly refer to this as “Ki.P’s trench coat era” to reference photos.

If there was one clothing brand you could work with, who would it be and why?

Is it too simple to say Louis Vuitton? I wish I had someone more original in mind, but honestly they have some great pieces.

If you could splurge on one new piece of clothing, what would it be and why?

I don’t really need any new clothing, but if I could get any new item I’d probably get a pair of Louis Vuitton’s 1.1 Millionaires sunglasses in green. They’re so funky looking, which just makes me want them even more.

What’s your favorite seasonal activity?

I don’t know if it’s really a seasonal activity since it can happen in any season, but I enjoy sitting outside and sketching scenes: people, places, animals — it helps me feel more connected to the world. Especially when it sometimes feels like my job alienates me from others, I’m grateful to reconnect with people, even if from a distance.

What is one thing you never leave the house without?

A hat, usually a beanie. I usually have an unusual hair style or color that makes me easy to spot, so hiding it can make it a little more difficult to notice its me. I don’t have anything against those who recognize me, but sometimes it’s nice to just browse a store or enjoy a meal relatively unbothered.
