Tips for Cutting Down Trees
While its true that most homeowners with a chainsaw (and the fortitude) can cut down a tree, it should be stressed that this is a project to be approached with the utmost care.
Safety is the number one concern. Not only are chainsaws dangerous, but falling trees are equally so. It stands to reason therefore, that any trees of considerable size should be dealt with by a professional.
If you have any doubts, err on the side of caution and consult or hire an expert. If however, you have a small tree that needs to be removed, and you think you are up to the task, then weve included some tips that should make your job safer and easier.
First off, make sure that you are comfortable operating a chainsaw. They are excellent tools that can make short work of most any tree. They are however, quite dangerous and should be operated very carefully.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) you should make sure that you are wearing the proper protective gear. This includes a hard hat, eye and ear protection, long sleeve shirt and pants, work gloves and steel toed boots.
When operating the saw, a general rule is to never cut anything that is above your head. Additionally, while cutting make sure your footing is secure and both hands are on the handle. For additional safety information, OSHA has a fact sheet about working safely with chainsaws that can be found here.
Preparation is very important. You should try to choose a calm day, with as little wind is possible. Survey the area from a distance to help determine which way the tree will fall. Consider the direction the tree leans or if it appears to be heavier on a certain side.
For trees taller than 10 feet, it is recommended to attach a rope and apply tension in the direction that you want the tree to fall. The natural lean of the tree (or lack thereof) will determine the amount of tension that you will need to have on your rope. Lastly, look for structures wires, landscaping or anything else that could get damaged by the falling tree.
Always plan an escape route. Once the tree begins to fall, you will want an open path to exit from. If necessary, clear the area around the tree of any debris or low level branches that can get in your way.
When you begin cutting, it may be necessary to cut a hinge or wedge to direct the trees fall. To do so, cut at a 20 upwards angle on the side of the tree that is in the direction you wish it to fall. The depth of your cut should be equal to one quarter of the trees diameter.
A few inches above that cut, make a second cut at a 70 downward angle until it meets your first cut, forming a wedge. Your final cut should be made on the opposite side of the tree, parallel to the ground and towards the wedge. It is a good idea to pause halfway and assess the situation.
At all times, stay aware of your escape route and once the tree begins to fall, step away immediately.

Do NOT top your trees!
If you are considering having tree work done and one of our competitors tells you that topping your tree will help your tree by making it smaller and safer. Please, send them on their way and contact McCreesh Tree Service, Inc.
We have been serving the Bucks County area for more than twenty years and our certified arborist would never tell you to top your trees.
This practice actually harms the tree, opening it up to disease and decay, which over time weakens the tree structually and significantly lessens the life of the tree.
To get a more in depth look at why this practice is so harmful to the trees, please visit this site. However, trees do need to be pruned and dead wooded from time to time.
Proper pruning helps shape your tree and dead wooding makes your tree much more safe during inclement weather. Take the time to look at the trees on your property and use this checklist to make sure your trees are healthy and safe.
Are there large dead branches in the tree?
Are there detached branches hanging in the tree?
Does the tree have cavities or rotten wood along the trunk or in major branches?
Are mushrooms present at the base of the tree?
Are there cracks or splits in the trunk or where branches are attached?
Have any branches fallen from the tree?
Have adjacent trees fallen over or died?
Has the trunk developed a strong lean?
Do many of the major branches arise from one point on the trunk?
Have the roots been broken off, injured, or damaged by lowering the soil level, installing pavement, repairing sidewalks, or digging trenches?
Has the site recently been changed by construction, raising the soil level, or installing lawns?
Have the leaves prematurely developed an unusual color or size?
Have trees in adjacent wooded areas been removed?
Has the tree been topped or otherwise heavily pruned?
Of course, if you are unsure about a tree, you can always contact us and we will gladly come out, assess your property and give you a free estimate if anything needs to be taken care of.

Leicester churchyard’s crime problems ‘won’t be solved by cutting down trees’, argues councillor
Cutting down trees in Leicester churchyard will not solve its problems with drug use and anti-social behaviour, a councillor has argued.
Leicester City Council is proposing the felling of 21 mature trees around St George’s church in the Cultural Quarter to open up the space and make it less gloomy and more welcoming.
One of the reasons cited is to make it ‘lighter, brighter and safer’ because the area has been plagued with drug abuse, crime and anti-social behaviour.
However Castle ward councillor Patrick Kitterick told a recent meeting he was sceptical about the crime-fighting impact of axing trees.
Read more: Revamp planned for ‘gloomy and oppressive’ St George’s Churchyard in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter
He said: “I wish we could get rid of the problems of crime and drug use in St George’s by removing trees.
“I fear it is not the answer.
“Poor lighting in the churchyard is the fundamental problem – it is not the only problem – but it contributes to the fear of crime.”
“If you take a measuring stick you will not find such a collection of trees for a good radius around St George’ churchyard and we are looking to take out a good 30 to 40 per cent of those trees.
“It is an oasis of trees in the city centre and we should proceed very cautiously before we proceed with anything that would substantially remove them.
“Trees in the city centre are such a scarce resource we should debate the loss of each and every one of them.”
A rare look inside St George’s Serbian Orthodox Church
City council economic development director Andrew Smith said there had been some 60 trees planted in the city centre in recent schemes such as Jubilee Square, Belgrave Circle and Archdeacon Lane.
He said: “The question we often face with schemes of this nature is have the trees outgrown their size?

Cocos Palm
Planted extensively throughout the mid-19th century and still popular in landscaping today, the Cocos Palm can be found all over Australias east coast, in Darwin, Western Australia, South Australia and in Tasmanian parks and garden.
A long-lived palm, it can grow from 1-2 metres annually and will tolerate salt, drought, frosts and shallow soil.
Cocos Palms have long leaf-plumes of a distinct, feathery appearance. They provide an instant tropical-feel to gardens, although their early dying fronds can become unsightly if not pruned.
They have a flat, fibrous root system, which has made them popular as poolside trees. There, they can provide shade without causing subterranean damage to the pool walls and help to give a resort-style atmosphere to a suburban backyard.Their reliably straight trunks and easy growth has also seen them planted by councils, in rows, along avenues and bayside walkways. When cultivated in this manner, they give a visual impression of grandeur and neat uniformity.
Their tall, slender trunks can take them up to 20 metres high, however their average is around 12 metres. Cocos Palms are topped with long, plumes of pinnate leaves that attach to the tree via the wide base of their stalks.
Solitary grey trunk covered in boat-shaped, woody leaf scars. It can grow to approximately 30 centimetres in diameter.
Cocos Palms produce branched flower panicles of up to 2 metres long. Their inflorescences open leaving long dry bracts on the palm. Their flowers are small, yellowish-white in appearance and cluster by the hundreds.
Within the monoecious sprays of flower both male and female variations occur. Pollination happens with the assistance of fruit bats who, attracted to the rich nectar of the flowers, carry and distribute pollen in their fur.
Unfortunately for the flying foxes, who also distribute the palms seed, they can become trapped in the palm and have their thin wings damaged by the flowers tough spikes. Even more of an issue however is the hard nut of the cocos palm grinds down flying foxes’ teeth over time so that they cannot eat and starve to death. This is considered to be the main reason why flying foxes live over twice as long in captivity compared to the wild.
Enormous 5 metre, pinnate leaves with up to 500 very long leaflets attached to each thick stalk. Its leaves are green with a grey underside and although they have pointed tips, the leaves are not spiked or as sharp as other palm varieties.
The Cocos palm is distinctive for the clusters of golden, yellow fruit that dangle between its fronds. Birds and various mammals, including some foxes, consume the trees sweet offerings, which turn from orange from yellow when ripened. The sticky centre of the fruit is accessed by breaking through a tough, nut-like outer shell.
A proliferation of fruit means the Cocos Palm sets an enormous amount of seed annually. If not removed before ripening, seedlings will appear around the base of the palm and at great distances, where birds and bats have carried seeds in their droppings.
Unwanted seedlings have been known to germinate from commercially available mulch and while Cocos Palm stumps will not reshoot, they should be completely dug out, rather than snipped or decrowned.
Like most palms, these require full sunlight and free draining soil. They are gross feeders and benefit from access to rich, organic matter. Heavy mulching with compost is recommended during the trees early years of growth. They should also be fed nitrogen rich plant food with supplements of iron.
Cocos Palms do not respond well to alkaline or limely soils which leave the tree suffering from a condition known as frizz top. This is where new fronds arrive already yellowed or browned and with a slightly burnt appearance. It can be remedied with the application of manganese sulphate three times a year.Highly acidic, these palms are notoriously difficult to prune or cut through. Their acid in combination with a stringy, fibrous texture has been known to damage chainsaw blades, clogging up and eating away at the metal.
Other management issues with this palm include its overall weight including the heaviness of fruit clusters and individual fronds. When pruning, gardeners also have to be aware of the spider families that are almost always a part of the tree, the ant colonies they can attract and trapped fruit bats.

National Arboretum’s failing forests could be replanted with new trees
Whole forests at the National Arboretum could be ripped out and replaced as staff grapple with what to do about dying trees and the potential costs.
At least 10 per cent of the forests were struggling, executive director Stephen Alegriasaid.
A soon-to-be-completed review into the health of the trees would help staff make the tough decisions and plan for the future.
“There was a set of circumstances that caused many of the trees to fail now we’re really grappling with what should we do,” MrAlegria said.
“Should we remove the remaining trees and try to establish a new forest at that site? Should we re-establish a new forest at a different site?
“We have to think about what species would we replace those species with, how much would it cost, if we’re going to use a different species what would it be and what value would it have for conservation.”
Mr Alegria said the arboretum had replanted close to 1000 failed trees last year and was developing an app for staff to record the history, condition and action taken for each tree.
Although tree health was the No.1 priority, he said staff were unsurprised at the failure rate as the arboretum had been designed to be experimental with its “botanically significant” and rare species making it of unique value.
“At the time they were carefully chosen on known characteristics and compatibility with the local conditions here,” Mr Alegria said.
“It wasn’t possible to determine if they would be suitable in the long term until we planted them.”
But veteran forester Peter Marshall said more than 20 forests were dying and he blamed it on poor management, lack of planning and overplanting, saying the entire arboretum will be dead within 10 years unless drastic action was taken.
“The spacing is unbelievable, normal spacing is 10 to 12 metres for trees, up to 30 metres for some species, in the arboretum most trees are two to three metres apart,” he said.
“It’s absolutely inevitable the trees on the outside of each forest are getting more sun and they’re bigger than the inside ones.”
Mr Marshall, who has 40 years’ experience as a forester and worked on the site when it was a pine plantation, said many of the trees were planted too densely, under-pruned, poorly irrigated and irreparably damaged by mowers and left to die.
He also criticised the site preparation saying the root structures of many trees ,including the Mesa oaks, had been compromised when they were forced into hard, stiff soil making them prone to waterlogging, heat stress and falling over and a potential danger to visitors as they grow larger.
Mr Alegria said the site was cleared before his time with the arboretum, but he was confident the trees had been planted correctly.
Mr Marshall also criticised the single species block forest layout saying it ignored tree growth habits making the arboretum doomed to fail costing Canberrans millions to fix.
He said the sheer number of trees meant staff were failing to prune out flaws with about 48,000 trees over the 250-hectare site a rate of 192 trees a hectare when the usual ratio was 20 to 30 a hectare.

Removing Palm Trees for Dummies
I spent a couple of hours last weekend removing a dead palm tree from our front yard.
Well, I should qualify that: I achieved partial removal, but I still consider that a victory. When we landscaped our new house eight years ago, we asked the contractor to plant a specific type of palm.
In his great arrogance wisdom, he planted a different species (the identity of which we can’t remember) without telling us.
We actually had no complaint for six years, as the tree seemed to flourish. Our tree in a happier timeBut the overly harsh winter two years ago was its undoing.
We had hope, without any accompanying optimism, that it would somehow recover, but we finally accepted the reality that not only was it no longer alive, it had no zombie prospects. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but something seems amiss,
The remaining tree trunk wasn’t massive, but it also wasn’t something I could make short work of with a sharpshooter shovel and a chainsaw.
Have you ever tried to disassemble a palm tree?
It consists of a seemingly infinite number of layers, each of which is progressively weirder in composition.
The outer layer (of this species) consists of the “bark” which is basically bullet-proof and lined with hooked teeth that are the envy of Great White sharks.
Beneath this bark are thin layers of fibrous material so dense and tear-resistant that early Polynesian cultures used them to fashion unassailable chastity belts for their virgin daughters.
OK, I made that up, except for the unassailable part.
There’s no way a saw can effectively cut through those fiber layers without becoming a tangled mess.Given these anatomical challenges, I devised a cautious plan that I hoped would allow me to deconstruct the tree bit by bit.
I first cut the roots using the aforementioned sharpshooter.
I had no idea how deep the root system extended (I still don’t, but we’ll get to that later), but a key part of my plan was the ability to tip the trunk onto the ground and work on it there. This step proved to be easier than expected.
After digging around the base of the tree, cutting through the less-than-extensive lateral roots, I wanted to push or pull the trunk over.
I thought about wrapping a chain around it and using the truck to tip it, but after a few tentative shoves by hand, the trunk actually snapped off at ground level, having apparently rotted over the past two years of dormancy (aka, death).Oh, snap! With the trunk lying prone, I proceeded with my Plan of Dismantlement.
Pro tip: It’s much easier to take a palm apart from the base up, rather than from the top down.
As long as I respected the natural order of the layers – and wore thick leather gloves – I was able to easily strip off the deadly “bark” (I’m sporting just a single Band-Aid as evidence of the wisdom of my approach). The term “fronds” is much too…sissified…for these vicious objects.
I was then left with a bare trunk to dispose of, one that I estimate weighed 150 pounds or so…more than I could gracefully load into a wheelbarrow or truck bed.
So, how to break it into manageable pieces, given its resistance to sawing?

Palm Tree Removal and Cleaning
Palm trees are very popular in many Australian climates and can be ideal for large or smaller gardens. Many grow tall with majestic fronds that provide shade and add a tropical feel to outdoor areas but do require some maintenance to keep them in peak condition.
At 1300 4 TREES, we understand there is a right way and a wrong way to prune trees and palms to maintain their health, beauty and functionality. We pride ourselves on being one of the best known palm maintenance and removal companies in Adelaide, regardless of where in Adelaide you live, the size and location of the palm or palms and position of the palms on your property.
There are many reasons why palms need to be removed. They may have grown too large for the area, have become unhealthy and therefore need to be removed, or you may have purchased a property and you do not wish to retain the palms.
To prune, shape and remove old fronds on tall palms like a Cocos Palm we use a telescopic lift to extend our reach to the top and remove surplus fronds to create an attractive looking collar.
To remove your palms we use our cutting-edge technique and state-of-the art equipment, cutting the whole palm tree down in less than day, dependent on the size or number of palms we are working on. Our experience, knowledge and understanding of palms in general means we can look after or remove many species of palm trees, namely the Cotton Palm, Cocos Palm, Bungalow Palm, Canary Island Date Palm, as we specialize in dealing with them all.
Our palm removal Adelaide service also includes removing palm stumps, mulching on site and we provide a palm relocation option. Call us to discuss the options you have regarding your palms and we will make an appointment to meet with you on your property so we can provide a no obligation quotation for you and work out the best way to undertake your job.

Valley family gets help removing overgrown palm trees
They’re nice to look at, but palm trees are a hassle to maintain. And if you don’t stay on top of it, they can cause some expensive problems.
Kathy Lay, of Mesa, knows all about that. She has a backyard full of trees, including palm trees–some more than 30 feet tall. “I call it my Garden of Eden,” Kathy says. “I go there and I pray.”
And this time she was looking for a miracle. Because her palm trees were taking over her yard and leaving a mess on her neighbors property. She says they file a complaint with the city. It would cost thousands to have them removed. But with Kathy’s disability and her husband in retirement–they couldn’t afford it. Eventually those citations turned into fines.
Kathy says they totaled nearly $3,000.” We were really nervous because we didn’t have any money to pay them,” she says. So they let me know. And volunteers with the Assistance League of Phoenix got to work. They got the City of Mesa to agree to forgive the fines and found help to get rid of the trees. It came in the form of the West Mesa Community Development Corporation.
The non-profit specializes in revitalizing Mesa neighborhoods by bringing in small businesses and helping homeowners bring their homes up to city code.” Maybe they’re at a point in life where they don’t have the resources to do it,’ says Executive Director Cynthia Dunham.
The non-profit enlists volunteers, neighbors and businesses to help clean up communities in Mesa and this project was a big one. Volunteers spent an entire day chopping down trees, removing fronds and answering Kathy’s prayers.”
It was really awesome,” she says. And while there’s still work to do Kathy is just glad the big stuff is done.”They’re beautiful and all, but the maintenance on them is really hard to take care of,” Kathy says.West Mesa Community Development Corporation specifically helps residents of Mesa.
They also accept tax-deductible donations to help with operations. Find out more about themhere. However, if you have a palm tree and can’t afford the maintenance check with your city’s neighborhood services department for referrals of low cost or free help. You will likely have apply and meet income requirements to qualify for assistance.
