he nods, at the statement that it had been his choice. that is something at least. not that he would ever expect grandsire or father or mother would have forcibly removed luke from his inheritance, the one he has expected him to have since he has been born, but he prefers to hear it regardless. he has never had to worry about his future, not in truth — all that was needed was for him to attend his lessons, and be of use to his brothers, once he was grown, whether that was at dragonstone or king's landing, under jacaerys or mother, or harrenhal under lucerys or father. this ? it feels far too big. he cannot do it, he thinks in a moment, the same thought he's had more than once in a panic ever since father had let it slide.
( he wants, he finds, to be able to do it. to prove luke right, in being able to step aside and for him not to regret it, as long as luke remained near. he cannot imagine it otherwise. knighthood, what he had wanted all of his life, as far back as he goes, he wants for other reasons. holding a sword or lance feels as close as weightless as he can get to such a thing, on land. those were enjoyable. he wanted knighthood and tourneys because of how they felt. a lordship would be different. to be trusted with it, with luke deciding he could not inherit the title... and still, the nerves gawk at his chest, eating him away )
“ what was it ? ” he asks, apprehension coloring his own tone. if something had worried his brother enough to wish to step aside, how could he hope to do a good job in turn ? he had been trained for it, for all his life, whilst joffrey hadn't. his eyebrows furrow, slightly, as he says it is something he thought he could set aside. he cannot think of what it could be. luke had friends and would do well in talking to the neighboring lords, or with the smallfolk. he cannot think of what would have been so grave that would have turned him from his future so strongly. “ what worried you so gravely you would give you this title ? ” it is strange, to see luke worried so. if he were not panicking as much as he is, he might feel badly about it. he might yet feel that way, later, when he has calmed down completely. but he has always seen luke as his older brother, unable to be moved, that he cannot imagine what could have overcome him and been stronger than his will.
❛ it was my choice, yes. ❜ and not one he had chosen flippantly, on some whim. he had agonised over it, for a long while, even going so far as to visit the small sept on dragonstone, seeking the counsel of the septa he had known since childhood, and wondering perhaps if he might finally feel the presence of gods he didn’t believe in during his quest for an answer. he hadn’t, of course, leaving the island as unsatisfied and conflicted as he’d arrived, despite morwenna’s attempts at soothing him. ultimately, it had been mother and father, who had helped him make his mind up, and he tells joffrey so. ❛ i spoke with father, first, and he tried to dissuade me, initially ― not because he does not think you capable, ❜ luke is hasty to add, hoping to put to rest his brother’s concerns about that, if father has not already done so. ❛ only because he did not understand my apprehensions until i… explained them fully. ❜ something he will undoubtedly have to do once again, here, now, for joff.
again, he curses their father for his impatience -- this would have been far easier with their mother here for support. he had feared, foolishly, that she might have been disappointed in him, might have seen this refusal of his duty as selfish, ungrateful. but that has never been mother, and he needn’t have doubted the seemingly endless patience and understanding she extends to all of her children. wrapping his arms around his knees, drawn to his chest, luke lowers his head, rests his chin on them as he stares out at the still waters of the lake. it is more difficult than he imagined, summoning the courage to repeat this truth to joffrey. something not quite shame, but a distant cousin to it, gnaws at his insides, guilt closing his throat. ❛ …i never intended this, you know. i thought it wouldn’t matter, that i could… set it aside, do my duty despite it. but… i do not think i can, now that i am older, and the future is not so distant. ❜ he will have to elaborate on what it is, exactly, but luke finds the words lost to him, for the moment.

“ i am not leaving, ” he tells him. not for lack of trying, of course, but he will not bring that up at the moment, and he hopes aegon does not recall his pleas to mother. he had been there when he had made them, certainly, for they rarely spent much time apart these days, the three of them, and he had made them often and not quietly, but he hopes it does not jump to his memory. he still thinks he ought to be allowed to leave. mother maintained it'd put him at risk, but if he were atop tyraxes... he thinks he'd be fine, and it'd be worth it, to keep her and aegon safe. with both jace and luke gone... it still sends a flare of hurt and grief anew, each time he so much as remembers his older brothers, gone now. with them gone, it fell unto him to protect them, didn't it ? whilst daemon was gone, and now... he does not want to think of that, either. the absence of him, and caraxes, would be a problem, he thinks, a gaping hole in their forces, and he cannot think about viserys either. he does not think he'd be able to stand it, if he were to lose aegon as they had viserys. as they had their older brothers, but the guilt manifests different, when he thinks about how small viserys had still been, the last time he had seen him. he'd prefer to die, first, rather than lose his remaining younger brother. “ you know mother has not given me permission to do so. ”
she may yet give it to him, he considers, not wishing to think otherwise. but the more realistic option is she will not. and if she does, it will not be now. so he does not feel bad for telling this to aegon, even if he wishes he were allowed to leave ( he has heard, the reports about those in the riverlands fighting, he should be contributing as well ). he sounds so very upset, and with good reason, that he wants to bring some reassurance, something, anything that would calm him and make him feel sure about their future — but there has been so much loss, one after another, ever since their uncle had usurped their mother, that all his words feel insufficient. he has never been a words person. he would much prefer to show what he thinks by his actions — by proving him that he'd be there for him no matter what, that he did not need fear lose him, or mother. he could not bear the thought of losing her either, or watching aegon upset for it. he does not know what he'd do with his grief, if mother were to be lost.
“ i am promising you that, ” he says, instead, and he does not intended to break his promise. “ mother has no intention of leaving you. we are safe, here, and if we were to move, it'd be together. we have tyraxes and syrax, to defend us, and the knights. ” he has talked to most of them, including the ones from house manderly, and they seemed like capable swords, even if he believes he could do more from the sky, and with flames.

@worthyheir said : why are you here? you should know by now i’m not going to tell you anything.
he tries not to let his frustration show too much, and knows he has already failed in that attempt. his fingers close unto fists, before he forces himself to open his left hand, although the right one remains closed, nails digging unto his palm. jace and vermax had barely survived the gullet, he knows. they all know it. it had been him that had stood at the doorways, that had stood in the rooms with mother whilst they discussed his brother's health and recovery. and yet he insists on walking around instead of resting as gerardys had insisted he ought to do, for longer. mother had allowed him to listen to the councils ( those that had come before the news had come with luke's fate, back before she had collapsed. they had fallen to grandsire and grandmother and jacaerys, after, whilst she recovered, and not long after he had been sent away with excuses ), so he does not see why his questions wouldn't be answered. “ stop treating me like a child, ” he seethes, unable to keep the frustration from his tone. “ i am almost your age — you are not much older. if you can know what goes on with the war, i wish to know too. ” he knows only there had been some discussion of flying, after jace had properly recovered, although he knows not where, to what city or land, and the curiosity at not knowing eats at him.

this is made redundant in canon but i do think he was absolutely envious about jace and luke's ' long served as a squire(s) ' and was absolutely constantly questioning rhaenyra on when it was his turn
#out of character.#i do think he was made a squire in canon considering it says he was wearing a squire's armor when he tried#getting r.haenyra to let him go to the dragonpit but that's a hc on that i think it'd have been a good thing to keep him busy#like he absolutely could have worn that thing and not been one#but like in no dance aus ? he's asking until he gets made one sooo much. he'd have loved the responsibilities i fear#his attention is not the best so he absolutely would have gotten distracted at times but he'd have loved them#then again a lot is made redundant in canon since his older brothers keep insisting on dying but what can you do

character headcanon generator
joffrey uses two-in-one shampoo and conditioner ( if it existed in westeros he absolutely would. as it is he just uses one product / soap for his hair, but he absolutely would )
joffrey is unphased by mostly anything ( no. he is very phase-able. prick him and he jumps (at that person's face). on the other hand he is unphased by a lot of dangerous things. in that sense ? absolutely. he'd do them )
joffrey is a sleepwalker ( no but he is a very very bad sleeper. his sleeping schedule is a disaster and he wakes most often than not )
joffrey looks at the bright side in every situation ( for the most part, yes )
joffrey walks with purpose ( yes absolutely. it's how he gets into places he shouldn't be in )
joffrey doesn't know how to say "no" ( see the thing is he doesn't like to say "no" if it is something he can say "yes" to. he'd have been very permissive as a father and an uncle. he'd say yes to almost anything his little brothers ask of him. on the rare occassions he makes a decision, he absolutely cannot be moved, but for the most part he can be convinced )
joffrey believes in ghosts and insists on trying to summon one at every sleepover ( yes he'd believe in them, yes he has attempted to summon them )
joffrey is a bird person ( no. he likes birds just fine but he's a snake person. and dog and horse, for anything else )
joffrey is never punctual ( very accurate unfortunately. he tries his best but he does tend to be late most often than not. the black council meetings were an exception but that's because he was at rhaenyra's side a lot of the time as the war progressed and also he was anxious about participating so he had to be there to plead his case for it )
joffrey is afraid of doing anything without other peoples permission ( no. god no. god that'd have saved his life, maybe. no, he does things without permission constantly and 80% of the time is very sorry about it later )

what are his thoughts on ser harwin strong given he wasn’t even three when he was sent away ? what about ser laenor velaryon ? are his thoughts about a father a bit more complicated then his brothers due to how little he likely remembers of them ?
the short answer is: he has very few thoughts on either on them.
laenor velaryon carries the title of his father, in theory and as far as the world is concerned, but laenor was killed when he was still two. he never had a chance to truly get to know him and he has no memories of him at all. the main memory associated to him he has, is the fact that it was at his funeral that the fight at driftmark in which his uncle lost an eye happened. he was incredibly saddened by his death when it happened — he didn't understand why his father would not come to see him anymore, or play with him, and he kept crying at times and would not calm unless he was with tyraxes, even when he had been told it was not because he did not want to, but because he couldn't. he had difficulty understanding the finality of his absence, and somehow kept expecting him to land on seasmoke once more and say he was perfectly fine and it had been a misunderstanding. he was devastated at his funeral, and he was sadden over his death for a time afterwards — but eventually, he moved on and forgot him. whatever opinion he has on him, it's constructed wholly on what his mother and brothers think of him (or corlys, but he does come after his mother and brothers in his consideration). if they say he was a good man, then he takes them at their word. he makes it a point of ignoring any talk about him that he may have caught at court. even if there were parts of it which were true, so much of it is ridden with politics and rumors and weapons aimed at him and his mother and brothers, he genuinely considers it useless. if he cannot verify it, and he cannot trust it in its entirely, he prefers to ignore it outright, even if it means losing some true information. he knows he was a dragonrider, he knows he named him in honor of someone he loved which he treasures, and he knows he claimed him and his brothers as his. it is all he truly has of him.
harwin he similarly has very few thoughts on. the rumors irritate him at times, but he rarely thinks about them first. he doesn't keep them in his mind present, and it is only when he is reminded of them that he remembers harwin strong. he had no opinion of him when he was rhaenyra's sworn shield, beyond finding him interesting due to being a knight and a protector. he thought it was funny how large he was, but he held no special affection for him aside from him being in the inner circle that they ran in, so he felt comfortable with him. and similarly to laenor, he has no memory of the man, as he was sent away as a consequence of the fight at driftmark. he knows he was a knight, he knows he was renowned for his strength. but that is all he knows of him and all he cares to know. he doesn't have any interest in him, or unearthing information about a man who has been dead for as long as he has, especially when he doesn't even think of him as his father or have any interest in thinking of him as such.
for him fatherhood is not complicated as much as it's a very vague and distant notion. he is absolutely nervous he will not be a good father when he has a child of his own. the closest (and only, really) figure of reference he has is daemon and how he was as a father to rhaena and baela and aegon (iii) and viserys (ii). and there is some in there that would make its way into his own parenting, realistically, but a lot of it would come from how rhaenyra parented him. he obviously has internalized what westeros considers typical father roles of protection and such (although for him that always was rhaenyra first and foremost), and they work really well with his personality that it'd probably go well, but that is well and good but leaves the day to day open on what to do and how to behave (and he doesn't like a hands-off approach) he wants to have a family of his own, eventually, but he would learn on the march rather than anything else because he cannot really think back on what his own father did to raise him because he didn't have that.
(laenor was also not there all the time which wouldn't work for him, so that is the closest he can say to something in how his early childhood happened that he wouldn't repeat. but laenor's and rhaenyra's situation was very much unique in how they were both heirs to their own titles, and how it was unconventional for westeros, and laenor was still present the majority of the time. he just didn't live with them, but joffrey still loved him and he was still a presence in his life, short-lived as it may have been)
send me questions you have about my character!

in any survival au joffrey is a bigger spender though. he goes large periods of time not spending a dime because his living needs are covered by other people, and then spends a lot. and it's not like he works, so his income is his allowance. he's sending all his bills for jace to deal with, since he is prince of dragonstone.
#he doesn't pay for anything himself. either his mother or j.ace or l.uke WILL be paying for his things#out of character.#..... unless it's a joff not dying in the dance au. he's still not dealing with money though. someone else will organize that for him

i am constantly stuck in a loop of forgetting and remembering that joff died not just from the wounds of the fall and the broken things etc but that his own sword pierced him through his stomach (which he had in his hands apparently for ? some reason). and even afterwards his body was torn apart and while they recovered most of it, his foot never was.
#out of character.#i don't love the idea of him ? trying to fly with the sword on his hand. i'm not above dismissing that as part of the stories#passed down but that in actuality he had it fastened to his hip and it slipped or it was badly fasted or something of the like#death /#ive also said this but i ALSO don't believe robin existed. i think at MOST it was another girl but i don't think robin herself#was there with him. i think most likely he died alone
