Show Your Work! Ch. 10
This is chapter is about PERSEVERANCE!
You never quit, you always keep moving forward. “you have to play until the ninth inning”. You can count on success to come knocking on your door, you have to look for it. “You never quit just because you don’t know where the next job is coming from”.
The big question again, “WHAT’S NEXT?”. Once you’re done with something move on to the next project, never lose momentum. Just do the work that’s in front of you, and when it’s finished, ask yourself what you missed? what you could’ve done better? and what you couldn’t get? This are the tools that will lead into the next project.
Sabbaticals are always good to led the mind relax, however not everybody can take a year off work like designer Stefan Sagmeister but we can always take a day, a week, or maybe a month off just to recharge the batteries.
Writer Gina Trapani says there are 3 spots to taking a break.
1. Commute. Take the bus or the subway to work and write, or read, or just look out the window to get those creative juices flowing.
2. Exercise. Once your body is working out your mind will just let go. It’s a good way to shut off your brain.
3. Nature. Everything we see has something to do with nature, so why not go back to the place where it all started.
Never think about STARTING OVER a new project, think of it as BEGINNING AGAIN with a fresh mind and a full charged battery.

Show Your Work! Ch. 7 & 8
Since I’m almost at the end of the book, my last two posts about the book will be the final four chapters.
Human spans are those who put little effort into learning or knowing about other artists, but they want to their work to be on top of everybody else. Learning about other artist helps one grow. “These artist acknowledge that good work isn’t created in a vacuum, and that the experience of art is always a two-way-street, incomplete without feedback” - Austin Kleon.
In life, you have to make yourself look and feel interesting. However, to be “interest-ing” is to be curious and attentive and to practice “the continual projection of interest” - Lawrence Welschler. Make stuff you love and talk about stuff you love, and you’ll attract people who love that kind of stuff. Find your peers, surround yourself with positive people who are willing to help out. Never let a vampire, a person who sucks the life out you “figuratively”, in your circle. Knuckleballers are hard to find, but they are always going to have an open door for you in case you need assistance.
The internet has come a long way, but something that should never die is what Austin Kleon refers to “IRL” (in real life). Until the day robots rule the world, humans still do and you’re always going to have to communicate face to face with someone in order to further your studies or work. Build a group of people with same interest. Let them show you what they’re interested in. You might end up liking it too.
Unfortunately, not everybody who smiles at you means they like you. “Learn to take a punch” - Austin Kleon. There are 5 simple steps according to the book.
First, RELAX AND BREATHE. Bad criticism is not the end of the world. Take a deep breath and accept whatever comes.
Second, STRENGTHEN YOUR NECK. Put out a lot of your work. Let people take their best shot at it. The more criticism you take, the more you realize it can’t hurt you.
Third, ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES. Every piece of criticism is an opportunity for new work. Having your work hated by certain people is like a badge of honor.
Fourth, PROTECT YOUR VULNERABLE AREAS. If you have too sensitive or too close to you to be exposed to criticism, keep it hidden. However, compulsive avoidance of embarrassment is a form of suicide. Never be ashamed.
Lastly, KEEP YOUR BALANCE. You have to remember that your work is something you do, not who you are.
Hateful people are never going to die, they’re always going to be out there. It’s up to you when you need to block or delete them from your life.
