Sunrise to Moonset.
Description of Artworks and Experiments.
The two artists whose styles I chose to experiment with for this first assessment were Edvard Munch and Peter Doig. The two artists both create/ created expressionist and somewhat surreal landscapes which were created by utilizing different methods of applying oil paint and which generally depicted landscapes that were familiar to the artist. Many of my experiments were based around the use of a slow drying painting medium which thinned the paint and the use of large droplets of paint on top of the thinned paint. Oil paint thinning products were something I had never tried before but I found the results caused my artworks to resemble many of the works of Doig and Munch. On two of my works, four layers of paint were applied in order to give the color’s the depth that I was searching for and this process reminded me of Edvard Munch constantly altering and recreating many of his artworks, even going so far as to leave them outside so that they would be altered by the weather- which was an experiment I did try. My major work for this assessment, which shows a house, a lighthouse and a windowsill was inspired by the cliffs of Northern Sydney where I grew up and the artwork itself shows a sunrise near Palm Beach.
