Inspired by Jana Euler’s relationship between art, the object and the gesture i explored ways to investigate the Coronavirus cell. I worked with ideas of excess, saturation and texture to show the current conscious and the notion of beauty vs grotesque. I turned towards other artists such as Ernst Haeckler and John Armleder to help guide this investigation.

inspired by the landscapes of Carla Klein I’ve been looking at areas that evoke a sense of emptiness/peacefulness/quietness/eeriness/abandonment/uselessness around Sydney. Due to the current circumstances I haven't been able to physically go inspect these areas, so instead I’ve been taking screen shots of these areas on google street view. The fact these images of every street exist in Sydney/over the the world could be the catalyst for its own work, but it certainly has raised some interesting perspectives on the the paintings I will be completing. 

The street view has characteristic perspective, at times the image is distorted and magnified. These images bring into question ideas of surveillance, and with regards to current circumstances this kind of virtual exploration has a new layer of relevance and realism. I wonder how many people have street viewed the crowded beaches of Sydney.

My process begins with enlarging a large photo using a inkjet printer then using mod podge (like a glue) to secure it to the canvas- it needs 24hrs to dry then spritz it with water to saturate the paper. Begin removing the top layer of the paper, then slowly rub off the remaining paper until the image appears- it’s pretty laborious! Also it’s a little volatile and some parts may not stick well, as you can see. I have removed the hair part and will be painting flowers in its place!!! In my mind it will be great -fingers crossed!!

Experiment 1

oils and acrylics on primed canvas 16 x 20

experimenting with layering colours on top of each other. Acrylics on top of dried oils. Letting the oils shine through by thinning the paint to a translucent layer of green.

During the week i’ve continued to research images found from google street view. I decided to loosely apply the forms and shapes to create an oil painting on mdf board. After discussing making the work somehow a bit more personal last week with Claire I think I might try focus more on the satellite images to base my work from. Although I’ve enjoyed sketching and painting these landscape forms, something about those arial images are just a bit more unique and engaging. In the upcoming week I will be focussing on painting images based on this birds eye view perspective.

After working a lot with acrylics I wanted to make something a little bit closer to myself, so I made two oil paint self portraits. I worked on primed canvas, started with an underlay of yellow ochre acrylics and worked with just white and burnt sienna oil paints for the portraits.
